I just realised that with my SGS II I can have better eye candy launchers.
Can anyone recommend me an app that tracks mobile data preferably with a widget that doesn't wipe after reboot?
Phone Usage has a paid version with a widget.
Hey guys, I just got a Samsung Captivate (basically a GalaxyS) and I'm loving it. Anything I should know/should do? I already optimized the battery life as much as possible (as far as I can tell). What are some must have apps/stuff?

If you've rooted it, then AdFree Android is a must.

I checked around some sites and have no idea what rooting does/how to do it. I assume it's something similar to jailbreaking?

What is Rooting?
Rooting is the process by which you regain administrative access to your phone. Even though Android is an open source operating system you still don’t have full “root access” to do what you please. Back when the iPhone launched in 2007 the hardcore techies quickly realized the true potential of the device, and the cruel software limitations that Apple had sealed it with. What became ‘Jailbreaking’ on iPhone was quickly translated to other platforms as well, and when the world saw the first Android back in 2008, the term “Rooting” was born.

iirc You can root the captivate with SuperOneClick

Not at all.
Most free apps are ad supported. It would suck to have to pay for all of them.

No no no. If a person doesn't understand what rooting is they shouldn't be doing so, regardless of if your explanation posted here is correct. If he screws up he will have no idea what to do, because rooting is the simplest thing you can do in the Android modding world.
If he wants to mod his device he needs to go to XDA and learn what busybox and superuser are. How to troubleshoot and how to access download and recovery modes on his captivate.
Friend got his San Francisco's glass cracked, what can he do to fix it? Or should he just buy a new device?

My only fear is voiding the one-year warranty. So I'll wait a bit for it to run out.

Implying any OEM will let us see the device like that. Google should just ban custom UIs. It works fine for WP7.
Ban Custom UIs (Allow optional UIs from manufacturer via their own site)
Stop Carriers interfering
Only Google should supply updates
Updates should be distributed OTA or by a program
Minimum hardware specs
One can dream though!
manufacturers should have a 'do you want to install our x UI on your device' on first startup
manufacturers should have a 'do you want to install our x UI on your device' on first startup
Yes, some Linux distros, for example OpenSUSE, ask when installing what desktop manager you want.
Probably won't happen in a long time.
I was expecting Honeycomb's Holographic UI to influence it a lot more, I'm disapointed.
Honeycomb is the shit.
The thing is we have companies who can only buy hardware from other companies, so they try to differentiate their devices using custom UIs because other companies are making devices with pretty much identical hardware. The only problem is it actually makes the end user not want to buy your products anymore because of the custom UIs. Even novice android users know custom UIs slow down updates.

Remember this is a very early build. It isn't even using the linux kernel 3.0 yet.

Oh that's okay, I hope to see a lot more Holographic sexyness soon!
I was also hoping there would be more Honeycomb elements in ICS.
I will remain cautiously optimistic, If it doesn't turn out to look like Honeycomb, I'm sure it can be modded to! :v:
My sister is selling her HTC Desire for a Blackberry Curve, she has issues with the interface.
Will rooting it and getting rid of Sense get rid of the usability issues? Specifically she says it's 'too slow' and sometimes the text messaging application scrolls straight to the wrong end (top - bottom / bottom - top).
If so I need to convince her to let me try rooting it..

Should be with CM7

Those issues are because of a poor spec device using a resource intensive UI, and a poor touch panel for the screen.
A curve will still be 100x slower than a stock Desire though so she must be fairly ignorant when it comes to tech specs.
I must be the only one not having any issues AT ALL with Sense on my HTC Desire.

Remember one of the (rumoured?) features is a theme engine.

Hopefuly it is as simple to use as T-mobiles theme engine on CM7. I'm just looking forward to getting USB host working on my blade.

Does anybody actually have a phone that displays the OS name instead of the version number?
