Android Thread V4 - Got money? Samsung Galaxy S II. No money? ZTE Blade.

My friend's having trouble getting Cyanogen on his Galaxy.
Apparently it gets stuck at "Click Start on the Heimdall Frontend. A blue transfer bar will appear on the phone showing the kernel being transferred. The device will reboot automatically."
Any ideas?
I never had to use any bullshit external programs like that when I flashed my Blade.

Although Heimdall is usually better I found Odin a hell of a lot easier to use.
Root it if you feel there is something you can't get on stock rom (look on XDA to see what you can have)
With the SGS 2 you don't need to change the messaging app or the music app because they're perfect.
Told my friend to at least get it booting on a stock ROM now.
When he gets that done, and when he roots the stock ROM, can he just install Clockworkmod Recovery through ROM Manager like every bloody normal Android device?
Fusion Garage Reveals Grid 4 Smartphone With Custom GridOS

With Symbian's clock ticking and MeeGo not getting a chance to shine (and who knows how RIM will be faring in another year's time), we're looking at a future that's very much an Android/iOS/Windows Phone competition. That's not to say that a more limited roster of contestants means we'll see any less innovation, but it is what it is. One of the promising avenues for new smartphone operating systems is as a derivative of an open-sourced platform like Android. Fusion Garage intends to release a handset running just such an OS, the Grid 4 smartphone with its Android-based GridOS.
GridOS starts with Android's kernel and adds its own layers on top. We've gotten a look at some screenshots and a little video, but it remains to be seen just how different Fusion Garage will make things, or if we'll end up with something that feels less like a new OS and more like an Android UI replacement with some custom apps. The platform will be compatible enough that you'll be able to run standard Android apps.
The Grid 4 smartphone sounds like what's becoming a mid-range set of specs for a modern Android device, with a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon (or is it? The phone's feature page advertises a "dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon", but the listed chip is a single-core component), 512MB of RAM, 16GB of flash, and a four-inch WVGA display. Tri-band HSDPA should let the Grid 4 operate on AT&T in the States once it arrives. Look for it to cost about $400, presumably off-contract.
We'll wait to see the hardware and GridOS to judge them on their own merits, but Fusion Garage has a bit of a checkered past when it comes to mobile electronics, with a very public battle with TechCrunch over the CrunchPad/JooJoo tablet, as well as facing accusations of GPL violations. It's enough to make us cautious, but we'll let the Grid 4 speak for itself.
What do you guys think?
Hm, thinking it'll be what it says in the link, that'll feel like just a UI replacement with some custom apps.
It is a sexy UI, though.

Also, would I be correct in assuming the Droid Bionic is basically going to be the Photon on Verizon?
This is the company that made the JooJoo, one of the first tablets to compete with the iPad which was overpriced and got bad reviews due to its OS. I hope this turns out well for them.
The 2 and a half second wake up on my S II is frustrating, only because everything else on the phone is so fast. Anyone found a solution or is this just the norm?
It is the norm but apparently KG6 (or 5, not sure) fixes it, if you're on Orange it'll be a while till that update, which'll also bring you up to 2.3.4 & no ROMs really fix it without making an impact on the battery.
You can try using a different unlock screen, like widget locker.

The Dusseldorf regional court has partially lifted their injunction on Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 sales. The ban remains in place throughout Germany, but the tablet can now be sold in all other parts of the European Union.
This news comes after it was revealed that Apple may have doctored photos used during the trial in order to get the tablet banned in the first place. It's not clear whether this revelation had any affect on the court's change of mind. A hearing is still scheduled for August 25th for Samsung to appeal the ban.
Posting from my new Galaxy S II, love it!

We need our own Galaxy S 2 Group.
Why?

my guess would be circlejerking.

Yeah, but there was a better picture around somewhere.

It is in a semi-useable state. You can send and receive messages but is still buggy.
Known bugs:
Doesn't autoscroll to bottom in chat view when opened.
The autoscroll to bottom when you receive a message does not properly work on multiline text.
OK button on the on-screen keyboard does not send message/login, you have to use the actual buttons.
The message notification is also temporary.
Haven't kept up with the thread, so I apologize if this has been asked recently.
I am getting an upgrade in September, and am wondering what phones are going to be out then on sprint?
I have been looking at the photon, which shares a proc. with the Evo 3d but with no gimmicky 3d and better battery life.
Any other suggestions?
**SPRINT ONLY**

Sprint version of the GS2 probably. I would expect if you want an HTC phone that better options than the EVO 3D will be arriving soon. Don't know about any others.

For Garrynohome and people who complain about RAM usage: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194510
It's possible to get HTC Sense down to very low levels of RAM usage.
Just got the LG-P990.
Too bad i cant find out how to connect it to the pc though.
Hey guys, should I get the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Xoom?
I'm leaning more towards the tab because it has 3.1

Even if they were to say it wasn't on purpose, it'd still make it a very poor, unprofessional presentation of evidence. They'd better get a slap on the wrist at the very least.

Get the Tab, it's far more superior than the Xoom.

That isn't low ram usage. So for a device with 786MB total you get 370MB free. That's pathetic.
And this is supposedly optimized Sense 2.1. So if the optimized sense 2.1 is a ram hog then I'd hate to be a Sensation owner. 786MB of ram with a non modded Sense 3.0? That's got to be awful.

The answer is, coming from someone who has a DHD, you get about 150-180 megs of free RAM after most background applications are loaded. It's enough for Android to not constantly be doing garbage collection like in the Droid 1/2.
The Sensation is essentially already being obsoleted by the HTC Amaze 4G on T-Mobile, which will have 1 GB of RAM, a 1.5 GHz dual core version of the Sensation's CPU, the Mytouch 4G camera, Sensation design, 42 Mbps HSPA+ on T-Mobile, and to top it off it has the same exact screen size, but seeing the HTC Vigor's design I would not be surprised AT ALL to see them cram a 720p screen into that space. The CPU/GPU might be a bit weak, but I doubt it will be that big a deal. It's presumably binned with the same tolerances as the Sensation, so you can probably go to 1.8 GHz or 2.0 GHz with the CPU if needed with custom OC kernels.
This is predicted to drop in October.
I've used two Sensations, they were super choppy. That was with music and facebook going at the same time. Plus I much prefer my SGS2 screen over their screen.

Was this with your processor overclocked?
[editline]16th August 2011[/editline]
I think it's very reasonable to expect smartphones moving on to quad core 28nm at around 2 GHz on A9 or A15 style cores around this time next year. Hardware is covering ground quickly and I expect to see 720p become standard resolution for 4.3 in. formfactors.
Wow. So you're saying you expect that people buying HTC devices should overclock their cpus to get satisfactory performance? No consumer should NEED to overclock to be able to run facebook and music without getting stutters. My SGS does it at stock settings.
So you're basically admitting their entire 2011 lineup gives a bad experience and is a waste of money.
[editline]17th August 2011[/editline]
Also Qualcomm won't be making quad cores. They've stated they think their Krait dual cores will be just as fast as quad cores. But we all know that's bullshit.
