I am really fucking happy with my Wildfire.
Small screen, not the fastest, but so useful.
LasGunz is arguing with me on twitter after I suggested Android to him after he was considering an iPhone 4. Could someone throw some pros / cons up here so I can link him before he slowly devolves my brain into mush?

Open Filesystem/Complete customization are the two first arguments

Yeah, he's not listening. I tried my best, hopefully he'll consider it before he impulse buys an iPhone
I've done some research on custom ROMs and I'm on the fence about it. Can someone give me some tips/recommendations? (Samsung Captivate, rooted)
Check out Cyanogenmod 7, it's like vanilla android+. The problem with roms is that you can't really decide whether you like them or not and check out all the features until they're on your phone. CM7 has a ton of customization which was a major perk for me.
-Android 2.3.5 (Recent builds)
-Power menu has take screenshot, reboot/recovery/bootloader options.
-Brightness/Ringer/Wifi etc. toggles in notification menu, can be chosen/arranged
-Built in lockscreen customization (though Widget Locker can do more)
-Way more tiny details like status bar clock+battery indicator style
-Built in theme chooser
Like a lot of custom roms it will probably run faster and smoother than the stock rom, though you'll probably want to use a different launcher.

I like what he was saying about iOS being really open.
Samsung Galaxy S II not coming to Verizon after all? (update: confirmed)
By Brad Molen posted Aug 25th 2011 2:46PM
Many of us were holding out hopes that the Function, Verizon's rumored variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, would be the latest addition to its LTE lineup, but now we're hearing that it may not be coming to the carrier at all. According to the Wall Street Journal, it appears quite likely that Big Red won't be involved in Samsung's anticipated launch event this coming Monday. The publication cites people familiar with the plans, who also mentioned that we should still expect to see the Galaxy S II make its way to Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T at the very least. Now here's some possible relief to the sting you may have just felt: BGR is now reporting that while this is all true, Verizon has a Samsung phone in the works that will have "nearly identical specs" to that of the GSII. We're still awaiting official confirmation from Verizon on the matter and will update when we receive word.
Update: We just heard from a Verizon spokesperson who confirmed the carrier will not be carrying the device, and offered the following quote: "We have a robust portfolio of devices that offer customers exciting options including the Droid Charge by Samsung which runs on Verizon Wireless' 4G LTE network."
Oho, my Dad's been waiting since the beginning of the summer for Verizon to get a 4G dual core phone, he's gonna be pissed.
This business of carrier exclusive models in the US just keeps getting shittier and shittier.

I want to be dead. So are there any good alternatives for people who will go without the gs2?
you know, verizon just does the dumbest shit. they make a ton of cash and sell very few devices..

The Bionic has been floating around in limbo for awhile but it should be out before terribly long.

I could like this. Everybody I know uses a Blackberry for BBM, so QNX might be just the thing that tips my scale.
Then again, my requirements for a phone are now 1000x larger than they were back in, say, February. If it doesn't have an FFC, 4.3" screen, 8mp shooter, LTE/a proven to be fast "4G", and optionally a keyboard, then I don't want it.

Fuck you Verizon. Fuck you. With a stick.
Okay, so it's either the Bionic or I switch to another network. Sprint seems to be decent these days.

BBM is supposedly coming to android anyway, but i'm not holding my breath.
Its like the only way for motorola to earn money is via Verizion. If one day it collapse, they are fucked. And I hate their attitude, oh, we'll sell to one carrier in one country.
Isn't the Milestone series GSM?

Yeah, I remember that. I just don't think it's going to happen, we haven't seen anything of it for quite awhile.

That's like the only GSM phone. The rest of their droid phones are locked.
Droid Bionic is a maybe, HTC Vigor, rumors of the Nexus Prime.
Make it well known though, you need to clock all current HTC phones 20 percent higher to have equivalent performance to an A9 dual core. A dual core Snapdragon at 1.2 GHz is equivalent to Apple's A5 at 1 GHz (iPad 2 and iPhone 5?). The HTC Vigor will be at 1.5 GHz.
HTC phones right now are still generally at a perf deficit clock for clock, there's rumors that Sense 3.5 will be a massive improvement for performance over Sense 3.0, because the HTC Bliss is a 800 Mhz single core Snapdragon S2. Sense 3.0 on 2.3.5 leaked for the Desire S just flies from user reports, and is very easy on the RAM though. 60 FPS constant rendering, etc.
If you really want a "latest and greatest" smartphone for 2 year contracts, it may be worth waiting until spring for Krait, Tegra 3, Samsung 2 GHz dual cores, and TI's OMAP 5 SoCs.

They did make phones for AT&T, Sprint has the Photon or something, etc.
Yeah, and apparently the Photon is pretty kickass.
Problem is, being on Verizon is basically signing your soul away for good signal coverage. You'll always have a signal, I don't think I ever lose one with my phone, but you're locked in on a contract and the damn phone selection is so piss poor it makes my mind boggle.
The one good phone Verizon has had in the past few years, and I mean truly good, is the Droid 1. The 2 and 3 are great improvements, but not anything new. The Thunderbolt, while a fine phone, is just a rehash of the Evo. The Samsungs (Fascinate and Charge)? Proof why carriers should not be allowed variants of the base Galaxy S models.

Consider him a lost cause, people are stubborn to their views.
Underclocked my SGS2 to 800mhz and I haven't noticed any difference in performance over this week. Awesome.
How is the battery-life?
How is the battery-life?
A fair bit better, but I'm on miui so I'm not expecting amazing battery from it anyway. My phone doesn't go super nova when browsing though!

I've underclocked mine to 200Mhz when the screen's off, and now there is no lag waking it up. Samsung must've been underclocking that at like 50Mhz for it to slow down that much.

It goes into a deep sleep when the screen is off :v:
How do you guys set up your clock profiles like that? I can't seem to figure it out. I use Android Overclock over SetCPU, if that makes a difference.

SetCPU --> profiles
All that wait just for three different degrees of rounded corners, and a lack of physical Home button.
GG American carriers.
Are there any apps people would suggest for Android as a root user, I've got SetCPU (I've set it to lower usage at 30% battery and when the screen is off) and I've got a few games, any other suggestions?
When does ZTE Skate release? I'm gonna get it to replace my Blade.
