[t]http://kenoubiz.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/wg3.jpg[/t]
I did, I swapped the CF card for a 4GB one with PFSense on it. Works great. I want to replace the fans though, that "snail" fan on the CPU is LOUD. Upgrade wise, the RAM will take up to 512MB but I don't have any spare to put in. Pfsense has picked up the hardware crypto card but apparently the drivers are a bit iffy, I have no use for it anyway, I may slot a wifi card in there. The real neat bit is the LCD on the front, it works with LCDProc. I've set up the first two interfaces for WAN failover and the rest bridged for LAN - the LCD now shows the failover mode and the current traffic stats. Either way this is far better some consumer-grade nonsense cable tied to a rack shelf. For a mini ITX build the rack case alone would have cost more than twice what I paid for this x700 :v:
specs? and how much did you pay for it?
£500 It has two BL480 blades - 2x Quad Xeons, 16GB RAM, 2x 36GB 15k SAS. Four power supplies, two Brocade 4Gb/s SAN switches, two HP 16x 1Gb pass thru modules, KVM module.

I ordered a dual port Intel PCI-X NIC (Will fit in the PCI slot and run at lower bandwidth), a CF to 2.5" IDE adapter and a 4GB CF Microdrive to run the full version of PFSense and not have to worry about killing the CF card. It should all be coming in a week or two.
Here's mine. [t]http://i.imgur.com/QUtHPKP.jpg[/t] Specs: CPU: Intel Core2Duo E7400, stock RAM: 4 GB Dual channel MB: Some Gigabyte motherboard, socket 775, micro-atx PCI-E: One USB3 card with front panel in 3.5" slot PCI-E: One RAID card with two SATA3 ports PSU: bequiet! 300w non modular Case: Cooler Master Elite 343 Other: 2 Noctua NF-A9x14 PWM, one intake on side, one exhaust on rear. Also, some 120mm fan as front intake. HDD: 250gb for OS, Seagate 4TB and another Seagate 2TB, both for storage. The printer is connected to the network via ethernet. The server is running headless but just in case there's an old Samsung Syncmaster 151 monitor under the desk. I apologize for the weird lightning, still trying to figure out this flash for my DSLR.
Mines a cruddy desktop built with spare parts from 6 years ago. Got myself some cheapo 24/7 servers though. The picture of it is essentially a box stuffed in a corner between a wall and some 1940's shipping crate thing. Gotta make it inconspicuous somehow.
I rent too many damn servers. Not sure of the exact host/Exigent AU/RamNode/BuyVM and DigitalOcean hosts these. e: Yes, I really have to stop running shit as root
cable-porn level right here finally finished this client's SAN setup. can't say I did it alone though, one of my coworkers decided to run all the san cables while I wasn't in Again, sorry for the shit quality, its my phone camera (No I can't make those power cables any neater until we find the correct rack-ears for those PDU's)
I guess servers are dying out in these forums anymore.
I don't think there's really many people on this forum who have a home server. I don't really post much about mine unless I'm doing something with it, I use it every day but it never really needs much attention which is probably a good thing. Though on a side note I am having a home built within the next 8 months and will be doing the network cabling myself which I would like to document in this thread - maybe the thread title needs to be changed to Servers/Home Networking to get a little more traffic.

I sorta plan to do the same. Been getting tired of using wireless across my home so i've been working on gathering stuff to network mine as well.
Yeah I agree the title isn't the most accurate. We cleaned out our storage container the other day: [t]http://i.imgur.com/wTjDCBk.jpg[/t]
Hopefully next paycheck I can pick this up: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Poweredge-C1100-1U-2X-XEON-QC-L5520-2-26GHZ-NO-HDD-72GB-DDR3-Tested-/261274072295

So, seeing as this thread has been getting somewhat stale, I thought I'd post some more pictures from home. There's the networking lab, doesn't see much use lately. :( See Bigger [IMG_THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/QjUXId2.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] These two, along with the tape library, do most of the heavy lifting now, keep my home network running nicely without eating too much power. See Bigger [IMG_THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/AYqfSJq.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] It can never hurt to have too much UPS... See Bigger [IMG_THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/lAwMM02.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] Aaaaand the rediculous blade system I've been using for testing things out. See Bigger [IMG_THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/vrNNZDL.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] Edit: Completely forgot I had already posted the blades.. Nevermind you can look at them on this page too..
thats insane. so what, they are just getting thrown out? or back into storage again?
Some are going back into storage, we need to keep a running stock of each model for when stuff dies. All of our 2600 routers and 2950 switches are either being sold, donated, or recycled. We don't really deploy 24-port switches anymore. I'm trying to convince my manager to let me put together some lab kits to sell on eBay since they go for quite a bit of money.

Got two, woopydoo: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=370914303930 I think I missed out on better deals, considering RAM is the main priority, but there's always two desktops I have.. with another 12GBs of RAM.

I finished turning my old Neoware box into a PFSense router a few weeks ago. I have an imgur album with more details here: http://imgur.com/a/vx887

Used, £500 all in.

Even though there is a hit in shipping, the needless upgrade in RAM is well beyond the cost.
Our company is looking for cheap servers, would these be a better buy than spending $800 each on machines with Haswell i7s?
Those C1100's are a great deal for home labs, and depending on what your company needs they might work well. Though I'd be weary about using no-warranty ebay gear as a mission critical system. A day of downtime for most companies would massively outweigh the money saved on used servers.

Going to a datacenter for the first time ever on wednesday to check the place out for colocation. quite excited. (Yes, i realize this isn't that great but its exciting to me.)
Make sure you ask if they have bandwidth overage fees.. that can get to be really expensive Also sometimes places will charge a lot for power without mentioning it to you beforehand
Well i actually didnt realize they have page on their site to get a quote. found it a few hours ago. they dont charge for power, and its unlimited bandwidth, but its $35 per/mbps. For 10mbps, 1u server, 1ip address its over $400/month seems awfully expensive to me. seems like more than it should be.
