I can see why, that's a really good deal.
Yeah, it's perfect for running VMs on it. The HDDs cost more than the server :downs:
How many VMs are you running?
How many VMs are you running?
No idea, I know we have like 3 different computers in the "server" closet running various things. Once we get it setup, I'll let you guys know. It's probably around 8?
i'd be surprised to not get some laughs from this question, but does anyone have any experience with TP-Link switches? found it on walmart's site. i want a new switch with more ports. i currently have a 5 port switch. it's $27 and i just happen to have a walmart gift card but nothing else on walmart intrigues me. I've found TP-Link gear to be lacking in quality.
I've found TP-Link gear to be lacking in quality.
How so?
How so?
We've had 2 TP-Link routers, a TP-Link USB wifi adapter, and a TP-Link 8-port switch. All of them were extremely flimsily constructed. One of the routers and the switch both suffered hardware failure.

I got a tp-link wifi adapter, works fine but I've heard a lot of complaints about them so I guess I got lucky (or it fails tomorrow)
guess i'll just save up for a good, much needed, firewall instead. [editline]26th December 2013[/editline] SO I've decided to give xenserver a tryout. I'd like to try making a windows server vm. On the server, I made a virtual disk called ISO. how do i transfer the ISO to that disk, from my pc.
If you need a Firewall, check out pfSense. http://www.pfsense.org/
yeah, i was thinking of getting the Netgear FVS318G-100NAS ProSafe Firewall and running pfsense on it. [editline]26th December 2013[/editline] atleast i was going to. i really should read reviews more. turns out its a piece of shit.

You can find them for as low as 25 bucks and they are great switches and even have a management port.

If you don't need QoS/Trunking/VLANs then an unmanaged switch is what you want, they are cheaper and require no set up. Like others have said in this thread, I don't suggest you go with TP-Link I have never owned any of their switches but I have encountered a few TP-Link routers at work and they have had numerous issues. My advice is stay away, there is a reason they are cheap. Any of these alternatives or something similar will work fine, they all perform the same. I think I'll just go with that netgear one. I don't know if Netgear is great but I already have 1 switch from them and it's good so I guess I'll roll with what I'm familiar with. Thanks again.

I think my GTX 460 SE went out in my AMD machine which has an FX-8350 overclocked to 4.7Ghz with 8GB of 1600Mhz. Would this be a good server to have Proxmox on? The board doesn't have a native video chip... So it's kind of useless otherwise. I have a spare graphics card I can temporally hook up and use it with.

Second, you really don't wanna have a video card in a server if it can be avoided. The less power used the better. Also, remove the over clocking. Again, if you're going to be running a full time server, you don't want a bunch of heat being pushed out and you wanna use as little electric as you can.
This is the board. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128514 I was just saying that I would need a monitor to at least install the OS. But yeah. I'll remove the overclock if needed. It's got a huge after market Evo 212 on it, so heat isn't much of a worry.
Well you say you have a spare graphics card, what card is it?
Nvidia GT 610
Well it's not too power hungry. I'd say it should be fine. In all the set-up should be fine for running a few VMs on it.
Care to show the sexy specs?
We are a server provider. So, there are several different specs, but mostly E3-1230v2's and Dual Quad L5420's.
Well I decided I officially hate xenserver. moving to esxi
GT 610 is pretty much one of the worst graphics cards out right now. Integrated graphics are better than it consistently in benchmarks
GT 610 is pretty much one of the worst graphics cards out right now. I'd say just get some older generation decent card used somewhere. Like a 7870 or something
