So I'm in need of a new router. Moving in with some friends and of course I'm still going to be running one server I have plus I plan on buying a few more soon. trying to find a cheap yet very secure router. I was thinking sonicwall at first but after already using one, I find them to be a pain in the ass. I found one on tiger direct, but I feel like it's too cheap looking and I can't find any reviews on it (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8143988). I need wireless in the router and I'd like to have more than just 4 ports. willing to spend up to $400. Any good suggestions would be helpful.
Take a look at routerboard.com , they're MikroTik's hardware parent company. I recently bought their rackmount 24pt router/switch for $199 and like it a lot. They also have tons of customization options, so for example you can add a mezzanine-type card for wireless on the same device if you choose. Imho the hardware is great for the price, and the software is very feature packed, although a little hard to get used to. Routerboard's switch/routerOS supports pretty much any feature you'd need for business use and has a web management or CLI based config. I suggest you take a look
So the poweredge server I got is running great so far. I got a pair of 73GB Ultra320s from dad. They didn't come with caddies however so the server is on its side and they're literally sitting on a couple slices of cardboard to keep them positioned correctly in their slots. Learned that the server is at least a decade old, and that its version of the system board can't do dual core Xeons. However the boards can be found online so... maybe some day I'll upgrade it. At the moment though I have a pair of 146GB drives and 16GB of RAM coming to the apartment by this weekend. That should fill it out quite nicely for our purposes. Its only running a tekkit server right now, but we're in the process of moving the gmod server we used to run to it. Maybe we'll host an IRC off of it or something too. Who knows. For a home/group server, what else should I consider running on it?
its your server. do what you want with it. run servers you enjoy and will play on it. dont forget down/up speeds. having too much will bottleneck.
So, my father is a network admin for a local chain of banks, and since i've pretty much grown up with the stuff i've decided to go into the field too. No regrets so far. On that note i'm taking a Cisco CCENT/CCNA course and a friend of mine and I are in charge of working on a few servers while everybody else learns different stuff. These are a few pictures we took a few months ago when we started to put everything together. We've been trying to make due with everything with a severe lack of zipties and left over old equipment from the school's IT dept. (Of course, none of the KVM switches they give us work ever) If we just had more zipties and velcro ties.. Budget cuts Way back before we could find a shelf for the keyboard and mouse...i'm 5'3'' and couldn't exactly reach too well... I'll have to take an updated picture soon.
I'm gonna wait to see next months power bill before i do anything like upgrade the system board or processors. I'm expecting to get shafted for that.
How are you liking the Cisco track? Drinking the Kool-Aid yet? ;)
Personally I don't feel like Cisco is what they used to be. I may be the only one that thinks so but to me it seems like their newer equipment could be a lot better.
Personally I don't feel like Cisco is what they used to be. I may be the only one that thinks so but to me it seems like their newer equipment could be a lot better.
Well considering they haven't actually made anything original since their routers....

Brocade SUCKS [editline]31st March 2014[/editline] Look into packet tracer, or GNS3
I've taken a huge liking to Brocade recently, somebody really needs to dethrone Cisco from the whole 80% market ownership thing. I'm not saying Cisco equipment is bad, but having one company dominate an entire market is bad for anything.

I wonder how Linksys is going recently, I haven't been able to see if Belkin really changed anything with their routers. Yuck belkin
Linksys is taken over by cisco now and as long as you stay away from their cloud routers, they're ok.
Cisco acquired Linksys in 2003, thats old news, Belkin acquired Linksys from Cisco in 2013.
Linksys is taken over by cisco now and as long as you stay away from their cloud routers, they're ok.
I like what they're doing with the new take on the WRT-54G, but with what they're charging for it, I'd start looking at Ubiquity.
Cisco acquired Linksys in 2003, thats old news, Belkin acquired Linksys from Cisco in 2013.
didn't know that, hrm. i got one of thier crappy routers a year ago, the Linksys EA6500, to be exact, and i hate everything about it. slow as fuck, always cutting out on internet, on both wired and ethernet. has cisco plastered all over it, hence why I figured they still owned linksys.
I like what they're doing with the new take on the WRT-54G, but with what they're charging for it, I'd start looking at Ubiquity.
The new WRT costs far too much to have the same popularity as the old one.
Here's some dual 2-core AMD Opteron servers I was working with for a college project. Rackable makes some interesting stuff to say the least :P

You guys, you guys. My networking career has peaked I don't think I will find anything else as good as this
so aside from the fucking ugly look of it, what do ya'll think of the new WRT1900? http://store.linksys.com/Linksys-WRT1900AC-App-Enabled-AC1900-Dual-Band-Wireless-Router_stcVVproductId158014980VVcatId553965VVviewprod.htm

Btw, new SAN core is now in production redundant Nexus 5020's [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/HBcc3ga.jpg[/img_thumb] FYI I didn't cable this. It could be neater but we didn't have any horizontal cable organizers available at the time and it was done in a hurry. Can't complain as long as all the cables are labeled (which they are  )
Only one WAN? How common..
It's a home router, not really business class...
so i was given a sonicwall yesterday.. dislike... a lot. its interface is confusing as hell. I actually had to read the manual just to find how how to use the dmz.
