Could a nice server with say, a Xeon and 16GBs of RAM be able to be my router, File server, and game server all at once?
My NAS...
A NAS with a desktop environment and 8 GB RAM?
Could a nice server with say, a Xeon and 16GBs of RAM be able to be my router, File server, and game server all at once?
Easily, and probably a fair amount on top.
Server guys just got these in the mail to go alongside our other four blades: [t]http://i.imgur.com/gvBQ8O3.jpg[/t] Overall our UCS platform will have over 2TB of RAM and eight Xeon E5-2680's... needless to say we could virtualize the rest of our datacenter on these things alone. *EDIT* I mean 16 Xeons...
Linksys is taken over by cisco now and as long as you stay away from their cloud routers, they're ok.
Or if you are [sp]unfortunately[/sp] me and gotten one of those to be damned things, you can downgrade them to the old, cloudless GUI to regain full control and get what you love. [editline]12th May 2014[/editline] Not to mention they preform pretty well. [editline]12th May 2014[/editline] Aw fuck it's 4AM. I was wanting to change the welcome message to crossbones because my server is named 'BONES' for being in a closest. [sp]I have a pile of BONES in my closet. Harharharharhar[/sp]
[sp]I have a pile of BONES in my closet. Harharharharhar[/sp]
And a fedora.
Anybody else get tired of seeing this guy in Cisco documentation?
UCS blades are racked. [t]http://i.imgur.com/GLkZG5L.jpg[/t]
Beautiful
Beautiful
It was weird only having half of those bays filled. It brings a tear to my eye every time I see it.
Let's talk about the sexiest server ever made. [t]http://www.buscema.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/IMG_1616-e1268768960616.jpg[/t] Mmmmmm. We have several these lying around, but unfortunately they're too weak to do much useful for us, as well as most of our infrastructure being Windows based.
Stupid sexy Flanders.
I don't even try [T]http://upl.kittehcat.org/2014-06-03%2022.04.46.jpg[/T] [T]http://upl.kittehcat.org/1401826007.jpg[/T]

Holy fuck, my dad decided to buy a Juniper VPN box SA2500 for our home network, it is arriving in 5 days. I will post pictures once we set it up and get it.

If they are, you guys might be able to dual-boot Windows on them.
No, we have G5's. they sit in our server room because they look pretty but they don't do anything.
No, we have G5's. they sit in our server room because they look pretty but they don't do anything.
Ah, ok. How did you guys have them in the first place, though? I'm guessing you guys used to use a lot of Apple computers.
Ah, ok. How did you guys have them in the first place, though? I'm guessing you guys used to use a lot of Apple computers.
Yeah our whole infrastructure was Apple in the old days. Once the XServe got killed off, we switched over to Windows for rendering and 3D work, and stuck with Apple for 2D Graphics and Sound. Now it's Windows for everything but sound, and soon(since Apple has decided they hate professional users), it will be windows for everything but laptops.
http://status.basbieling.com I should downscale some time :/ I also set up a vsphere on my old laptop recently (i7 @3.2 GH/z 4core - 8 vcore, 6GB ram) I use it for hosting servers at home and testing software that I write. for those of you whom work in datacenters or even have a rack at home, what do ya'll use to record how much electric you're using? right now i have the few servers i have hooked up to an apc battery back up, and the one server is running the program that records how much electric is being used, but i'd like to get a something standalone, even if it just has like an lcd on the front that shows how much is being used. I'd like it to add up kilowatts as it uses them but even if it can just show that kw/hr usage, that'd be good.

That will tell you what you are pulling in terms of Amps.
In a couple weeks, I'm doing a fairly large upgrade to my server. Right now I'm planning on a lower-end Xeon, a Supermicro motherboard with IPMI, 32GB of RAM and a 512GB Crucial SSD. Though I'm not sure about the RAM. Can I use regular, non-ECC memory (Like this set: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813182819) in the Supermicro board and not have problems? Or do I have to buy this more expensive set? http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239371

Some allow remote management over ethernet that allows you to see how much you are pulling and remotely disable ports. If your PDU does not have either of these then grab a kilo-watt-meter - and assuming all servers use the same hardware, just monitor one and then calculate based off that.
I need more racks. Badly. I can only run the WGS95 and the IBM eServer. I can't access any of the shit at the bottom with moving shit around. Really, why is it so fucking hard to find racks? Not even the scrapyards have anything.

Had to drive to Copenhagen (200 km away) at 12 AM Sunday to fix this stupid ZyXEL 24P unmanaged Gbit switch, which had decided to suddenly kill itself. So now we're running on our old 100 Mbit gear, bah. I've placed a order for a new HP unmanaged switch.
