damn dude, do some cable management.
I'm going to remove all 3 switches soon, since 2 of them is the old 100 Mbit used as backup, and the one in the middle is the broken Gbit - the cable management wasn't that bad before i had to do a quick solution at 2AM... There had to be network access by 6AM since that's when the local newspaper is being done.
What kind of specs does your equipment have?
It's all either Tualatin P3 or Netburst era xeon or a 68040, J11 or HP 7200 PA-RISC.

We have a fuckton of UCS chassis at work. We still have several blades that take up two slots, and those dividers are a bitch to take out. That aside, they're really nice to work with. It's really easy to move blades around.

Anybody here worked with Fujitsu servers?
I'm looking at servers sold in Japan, and damn, it's like double the price for everything compared to the US...
Any place you guys could recommend for getting cheapish home equipment?
I'm not necessarily looking to make a complete lab or anything for the time being, but i would like to get some actual hands-on work with a switch and router. I would like to someday throw my own littler server together for practice, but for now I wouldn't mind just getting some actual practice with the physical devices and the OS. I've got a firewall at work i can probably bring home for a bit of practice later on, but unfortunately all of our switches are in use.
As appreciation for all of your advice...have a picture of our rack that i plan to organize in the near future, because seeing it drives me fucking insane.

Right, I guess I could post these small servers I have at my place;

(okay, so thelightmeister is only hosting a REST API for controlling my room lighting, but I'll post it here anyway)
I'm probably going to have to pull the entire network down again soon, because I'm adding two more machines (laptops with broken screens) and I'll want to shift services onto them for better redundancy.
Muminpappa hosts an LVM of 1 TB, with another 1.5 TB waiting to be connected at the next reboot, used for shared home drives and a general-purpose NAS.
Mumin on the other hand ended up a work node, hosting far too many services for its own good. After the new machines are added, mumin's mainly going to run a GitLab instance, with GitLab CI probably too.
ldap1 is a virtual machine which may soon change name to ldap2, as I set up the main directory host on one of the new machines.
[t]http://ace.haxalot.com/pictures/random/zscreen/2014-06-20%2008.48.12.jpg[/t]
Here pictured are lillamy (the new LDAP1), and snusmumriken which will take over web node responsibilities. Both have broken screens, weak batteries, and bad fans. Since I'm repurposing them to servers though, that won't be a problem.
Oh, and ignore the mess on the desk, I just shoved all my electrical engineering work to the side so I could get an area for doing the installs.
Anybody got any experience selling a rack server?
I'm thinking about selling my IBM x345 as i'm not using it anymore and i could use the space it takes up.
I'm just wondering if i would be able to get rid of it in a few weeks.

Considering how old that technology is and how inefficient it is, being an old xenon and DDR SDRAM, compared to more recent, yet old, technology it's not worth too much. eBay would probably be your best bet, but like I said, its old tech so who knows how much you could really get.
[editline]27th June 2014[/editline]
funny thing actually. Was just checking craigslist and found one. its specs are
IBM eServer xSeries 345 Type 8670
Six 300GB Seagate SCSI hard drives
Two 32-bit Intel Xeon CPUs
1GB ECC DDR SDRAM
for $50 here in the us.
The prices seem allot higher on ebay (200-300€ for x345's with less ram and fewer hdd's then mine).
I thought about putting it up for direct purchase at 160€ and bidding on 120€ or something.

As I said, that's the local pricing and my opinion. I am in no way saying it's not possible to sell it for that much. It doesn't cost you anything to put it up aside from some time, so by all means, do it.
Moved some KVM switches this week. Console switches next week (many more connections).

nyeehh.... the USB is unreliable. I still use rollovers for everything.

I find it highly ironic I just sold one of these that my father-in-law never used, and now I am learning networking, and building a small server in my house. Seller's Remorse...F.
Do you guys here know when do you need to use a managed switch vs an unmanaged switch?
Trying to upgrade some equipment for a small business with 30 people (now, hoping to expand to 60 in the next 2 years).
raspberry pi that I just set up to host a tor relay

What are you using the switch for? Just linking PC's together? unmanaged is best for just linking PC's together. If you need to do some advanced IP routing/bandwidth control, snmp monitoring, mac address filtering, QoS or VLAN settings, you probably don't need a managed switch. Managed switches are obviously going to be more expensive as well.

Yea, the 48 port managed switch is just over double the price of an unmanaged switch (here in China at least).
We're planning to link the office's PCs together to an Active Directory server, fileserver, and the internet through these switches. I'm personally hoping the QoS on the router will be enough for WAN traffic, but there's some uncertainty if we need managed switches or not.

the QoS on the router will affect both WAN and LAN traffic. I'd say you would probably be good with just an unmanaged switch.
Have you considered a Smart Switch? They are almost a half way house between unmanaged, and fully managed.
For example, Netgear have a really nice range of Smart Switches, which support all the managed good stuff like VLAN, Port Trunking and QoS, but don't have serial consoles. They go for quite a bit less than a managed equivalent.
All done

I really want to build my own server, I have one unused PC and two unused laptops, but without a power meter to measure the power input, I cannot do anything as everyone will get angry at me by using electricity too much
The problem is that I don't know where to buy that power meter here

What do you wanna use a server for?
Something, like steam downloader so I could download my valve complete pack and TF2 in peace, torrent + youtube downloader, dota 2 server, something that I can mess with without losing my games and school work and shit

I got some hard drives today (:
