got the same idear :P but again they are just staying in a dark room.
What do you use them for?
So, the server you see in my previous video on top of the page, I have had it for awhile now and I haven't even used anything on it. I feel like I wasted a lot of money because I bought a dick ton of hard drives + that server, and I am not even doing anything with it. The fuck should I do with it. So much regret...

Host a few MC/Other game servers for funzies? Found this for 3 dollars at a thrift store; [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/nZNWI7R.jpg[/thumb] 48 port 3com switch. Not a super nice one, but for 3 bucks
Coloed all my shit in a rack at work, shared with my friend. The HP gear is his and the rest is mine. My zpool:
must have an awesome boss to let you do that.
Can someone direct me to a guide for server hardware? I wanna learn about the parts.
there's not really any special parts to learn about. they're just regular computers, with better hardware, in elongated cases. if you wanna read up on anything, i'd say learn the different chip architectures.
So I finally got into my school's server room -cables-
Holy hell the cable management.
I spy a USB to COM adapter, with a Cisco rollover. Those things are a lifesaver.
All those punchdown blocks are horrifying.
All those punchdown blocks are horrifying.
Horrifyingly well terminated, that is.
All those punchdown blocks are horrifying.
Look at the cable management of them then look back at the servers. what the fuck happened?! yes, i'm all about the server cable management.
so aside from the fucking ugly look of it, what do ya'll think of the new WRT1900? http://store.linksys.com/Linksys-WRT1900AC-App-Enabled-AC1900-Dual-Band-Wireless-Router_stcVVproductId158014980VVcatId553965VVviewprod.htm
So I moved into a new apartment today. First off, I got this router yesterday and it is fucking fantastic! second, i have a question that will probably make some of you cringe. The apartment I just moved to is an old duplex, so the wiring is rather shitty. Well down in the basement, there is only 1 box of outlets, and its about 10 feet from where i could realistically put my servers. would it hurt to run an extension cord over to my servers? Obviously i would find a really heavy gauge extension cord to keep a proper current.

Something that has surge protection :)
I would use something like a power strip instead, with a longer cable. Even if an outlet is grounded, you should still be using dedicated surge protection.Good call on the GFI extension chord, though an actual GFI outlet would be better. If you're in a basement, and moisture is apparent(probably is if you're thinking about a GFI) you should also invest in a dehumidifier. This is what we use at work for small machines and desktops, and until you have a large server setup would probably be good in the meantime; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842101311&nm_mc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC&cm_mmc=KNC-GoogleAdwords-PC-_-pla-_-UPS-_-N82E16842101311&gclid=CMOu1aCjv8ECFQcSMwodfG4A3Q It's also worth noting that APC takes it's surge protection very seriously. In fact, if something does get fried from surges that can be directly linked to a failure in their product, they replace it.

Once the landlord gets back, i'll be asking him if i can switch it, because i already need most of the outlets in the place replaced. The place is so old that the majority of the outlets are not grounded. I am also already running a dehumidifier down there. [editline]22nd October 2014[/editline] To add on, moisture isnt really too much of a concern, i want it running more of a safe than sorry type thing.
I feel like a new thread should be remade by now renaming this all to something more "home server" related now. Anywho, so i set things up beside my computer for now. for once i felt like taking a picture of the few stuff i have. here's the whole network layout as of right now

Also yes, I agree, we should rename it to Home Networking.

Taking small steps now. [T]http://i.imgur.com/LvuaFJL.jpg[/T] [T]http://upl.kittehcat.org/2014-11-11_16-23-22.png[/T] Right now I use it for local storage, FTP and VPN (WIP), and I might use it in the future to host game servers to take the load of our own PCs, after the 4 GB of RAM I ordered arrives.

That e2140 isnt very powerful.
Probably some Minecraft mod servers, and Garry's Mod, but I'll run these two one at a time only. Right now I'm at school and the thing just idles along in that dresser, unless I send a file to it from here.
