So I got my new server board, ram, and cpu today, finally :D threw it in a spare case for now. #firstE3
That's tasty. What do you plan on using it for?
This is my server [img_thumb]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/44896033/stuff2/2014-11-12%2022.09.59.jpg[/img_thumb] Nothing major, does what I need it to do inside the house. All of my machines are hooked up to a VPN via a server I rent so I can access any of my machines (including that server) where ever I am. That external HDD is plugged into the server not my desktop next to it, I sort of filled the HDD and I cant fit another HDD inside the case
That's tasty. What do you plan on using it for?
Its being used to stream music and movies. Movies over LAN ar home and music while im at work, and occasionally while at home as well.
https://imgur.com/a/1qcap Got a brand new Dell r710 for my 15th, it's going to be running ESXi 5.5 32GB of RAM 2 Xeon 2.66GHz processors?(Might be 2.33Ghz) 6 146GB 15K hard drives (Probably wont upgrade but one of these HDDs, most are going to have VMs on them HP DL380 G5, I have had a lot of problems with this but I just got some new parts and now it is working (Specifically PPM,Power supply, and power supply backplane) Broke after 3 months of me buying it 2 1TB hard drives, and 6 73GB Hard drives (Going to upgrade in futre) 16GB of RAM 2 3.0ghz Xeon processors Using it as a Home server/FTP/FOld@home/Minecraft/etc Going to get a rack soon as well
http://imgur.com/a/ruWKY got rid of the 6513, these pictures are right after we had it mostly assembled so some stuff isn't plugged in and the sides are off
My newest little server, an RPi B+: I wrote a quick script that shows basic system information. It's generated on the rpi every even minute, then grabbed every odd minute by a digitalocean droplet and served from there to prevent lag etc. Not sure what I'm doing with it yet so I'm just playing around mostly. http://ismy.pw/marvin/rpistats.txt e: [img_thumb]http://ismy.pw/rpi.png[/img_thumb] Sorry for potato quality.
Its being used to stream music and movies. Movies over LAN ar home and music while im at work, and occasionally while at home as well.
Don't you think that's kinda overkill?
burn to cd boot cd
Don't you think that's kinda overkill?
Well I really dont have much else to use it for.

Well I got my potato back up and running. [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/93x0EHh.png[/img_thumb]
Just picked this thing up from my dad's office. Appears to be a computer from around 2005-2006 with a Pentium 4 HT 524 (3.06 GHz) and 1GB RAM. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/508i2fe6lg3kqa7/DSC00171.JPG[/t] It had Windows XP on it, but I installed Debian on it, and intend to use it as a web server, and maybe also a game server (Gmod?). I'll upgrade the RAM to 4GB (max for the chipset) and the CPU to a Core 2 Duo E6700 but I'm assuming that should be more than enough? It'll always run in text/terminal mode.
I have a 32 slot teamspeak running on a potato :v:

:suicide:
Mini ITX Gaming server (Hosts Garrysmod, Minecraft, TS3): [THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/kyOOxTE.jpg[/THUMB] [THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/SNMdNMD.jpg[/THUMB] [THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/D3TRwks.jpg[/THUMB] Its basically inaudible, has a 200mm fan at the front, a 120mm Be quiet one on the PSU and same for the CPU cooler
I have an extremely old Compaq case, a MSI motherboard, an AMD Athlon II X4 600e CPU @ 2.2 GHz (I think), 4 GB of RAM and it is my server of "almost everything". I use it to run bullshit, I used it to store backups from my webserver (has 20gb of content, only 30gb storage), used to run a Minecraft server, used to run a script to retrieve Minecraft map files using rsync, then run overviewer.py, then use rsync to upload to a webserver. Worked fine! PC is literally on 24/7, used to host 200gb of music on it but OwnCloud is slow as fuck and currently don't have any of my ports open as my router has a VPN, so I don't use it anymore.
If that's all your running on it, surely it would work out cheaper just to buy a server from a TS host? P4's are not energy efficient!
doesnt increase the power bill by a significant amount each month so i'd say its pretty good (the CPU is also running at 1.6GHz)
If that's all your running on it, surely it would work out cheaper just to buy a server from a TS host? P4's are not energy efficient!
Yeah, especially since you would have a dedicated and much more reliable network as well. Probably could grab a VPS for $5 and be better than having a P4 draining power all the time. But if its what he wants to do, its what he wants to do I suppose.
Running a server yourself is more challenging, both interesting. For example, I could be using Dropbox for my schoolwork, but I prefer to use this server to send / retrieve my files from it. [T]http://upl.kittehcat.org/2015-01-18_11-23-17.png[/T] But yeah, it has gained another function for overnight. Speaking of energy efficiency, does the E2140 gobble up a lot of power, or not that much?
Dual quad core Xeon E5430, and I know. I'm taking the graphics card out as soon as it's in production. Four drives in RAID0
Speaking of energy efficiency, does the E2140 gobble up a lot of power, or not that much?
65w. I'd say its not worth using. [editline]20th January 2015[/editline] Also, I'm happy to see this thread getting much more love lately.
Let me know the type of ram you need. I have a ton of old ddr2 ram from dells that id scrap out parts from.
You do realize I'm in Japan right? :v: I already picked up the RAM anyways, it was DDR2-667. Thanks anyhow. Here's the screenfetch of it by the way: I tried to upgrade it to a Core 2 Duo but I couldn't find a BIOS update to make it compatible with it, and I figured that a P4 would be enough anyways. I might try again if I feel it just isn't enough.
Building another server because i can.
I hope you changed that processor. It won't work in a dual socket configuration if you later add another processor, you need the E5-26xx for that.
I hope you changed that processor. I may eventually switch to dual 26xx, but that wouldn't be for a few years, at which time they'd be more obsolete.
I think I gave myself a goddamn hernia this weekend carrying my Cisco lab into my new apartment. Everything is custom cabled so taking it apart wasn't really an option.
