If anyone's looking for a media/VM server, there's a good deal on some Lenovo ThinkServers right now.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/291140796467?rmvSB=true
Quad core hyperthreaded Xeon, 4gb RAM (Should probably be upgraded for VM's), 500gb HDD, and it's a tower so you don't have to worry about rack mounting it and it's generally quieter.
Any experience with their servers? Personally I've always found their desktops and laptops to suck.
Any experience with their servers? Personally I've always found their desktops and laptops to suck.
While they used to be fantastic, Lenovo has made some iffy design choices on their laptops lately. Their ThinkCentres are still solid machines, and I've only run into a few of their servers but never had any issues. Pretty solid all around tower server.
So I'm going to ikea today to either pick up lack tables or the coffee table to make racks for my servers. Anyone recommend whether i should get 4 post rails or just get versas?
Just got another layer 2 switch, though it's my first managed switch.

If that's a lower end model, which I think it is, may god have mercy on your soul. I really can't stand dell's CLI.

I've actually never used CLI before. I still need to buy a usb to serial adapter so i can use it. I really doubt I'll even use it much though. I need to so I can create an account for the web gui though.

You're triggering me.

But jokes aside, I really can't stand the GUI on 90% of networking equipment. The CLI is just so much more logical and capable. Like ASDM on ASA's make no sense to me.
Part of the reason I got this versus an unmanaged switch. It's being used with servers that have no real use aside from me learning how to use CLI. I was told by a friend that the power connects are pretty decent for entry level learning of managing and CLI. plus I got it for 30 bucks so it wasn't a horrible deal.

Yeah, it's still good for experience. I personally would have chosen an HP, much better CLI and honestly I see them more in-field, but a good starting point nonetheless.

Preach it, sister. The HP CLI has its quirks and annoyances, but it is definitely easier to use than Cisco.

I don't know about easier than Cisco. It has less options, so that may be a factor. But certainly easier to use than Dell. Granted Cisco was all I knew for the longest time.
Old equipment is still equipment right?

My apologies for the blurry photo. For those that don't know/can't see, that's a HP ProLiant ML350 G3, currently installing Ubuntu 14.04 Server.
So it finished installing, and refuses to boot from the USB drive. Oh well, worth a try.
Anyone know where I can get spare drives for this thing?

Anyone have experience with HP sas drives, are they reliable?
Anyone have experience with HP sas drives, are they reliable?
I just asked our server admin, and he says that between 82 remote sites he probably gets one failure per week. Each site has two servers, approximately 12 drives total.
So the guys from the hardware department decided that they really need a DIY storage server... They made this monstrosity. :goodjob: Oh and it's based on a consumer-grade seagate drives.

Any reason for that versus normal cisco gear?

Other than it was all free? :)
The biggest thing is the cloud management. It is really wonderful. Don't have to muck around in a CLI which for me is just a timewaster to find a console cable, pull out my ancient laptop with a serial port, etc. Firmware upgrades are automatically scheduled and pushed out, wireless meshing is really great, and ease of use is just amazing.

And here I'm thinking "that's one helluva security vulnerability waiting to happen"
Also you can get USB to serial adapters that's not complete shit, which means they can be used for console management.

I've always had good luck with these ones specifically:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812196349
Found an ancient HP Workstation that I've repurposed as a wsus server.
8GB of non-ecc DDRII, twin Irwindale 3.5Ghz single core hyper threaded CPUs that I can't even find a damm model number for & to top it off a bunch of old WD Green drives for storage along with a 60GB kingston SSD for boot. NICE.
Nasty, but it works. (except for when you try to query 92,000 windows updates from the SQL server, it takes a dump and crashes the node)
Can't wait to walk into work tomorrow and find it bursting into flames.
I havent been on this website in forever. First time back in awhile.
Anyway... Heres my home server/rack ive been putting together over the past few months. Was given a lot of this stuff from an old office but also have compiled other computers/parts into this.

Picked up a 4948 off ebay replacing the dumb gigabit switch below, mikrotik was having trouble switching full gig and is now just used for NAT.
Rack at work is updated too, will post pictures later.
really sad to see this so far back.
Anyone have any experience with white label drives? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5AD3KE4306
I want to use one of my servers for a NAS media server for streaming out movies across the LAN. I'm also going to use another one for NAS backups. Obviously for the movies I'm not too worried about corruption or reliability but the drives will be put into a raid array. As for the back ups, I'll also be using tape drives for an extra back up protection though would it hurt the drives to have a lot of re-writes? say weekly or monthly back ups onto the same drive.
Thanks for bumping this, definitely would like to see more folks posting here. Here's a small job I did at a new location, I'll take it for being rushed and only having a limited supply of velcro.
[t]http://i.imgur.com/ZeqB2tk.jpg[/t]
I'm considering getting 300 Mbps or 940 Mbps fiber to my house from Bell, which means some serious upgrades.
Right now my switch/router is a Mikrotik CRS125-24G-1S-2HnD-IN, which does the job just fine with my 50Mbps, though I'll be cutting it close with 300 Mbps with things like VPN. Not sure what to do with the router side, I may end up getting a CCR1009-8G-1S-PC or dedicate a used Dell Optiplex with an i3 and a dual port NIC to running the Mikrotik CHR with a $45 license key for gigabit speeds.
The switch configuration is pretty bad, so I may try to sell it and get a 24 port Cisco 2960G / 3750G. VLAN stuff just makes sense on Cisco. You create the VLAN, you assign them to a port using access or trunk. Done. The mikrotik switches are really fiddly and strange, it's as if they just translated the direct switch chip commands into the UI, rather than making any attempt into making the user experience consistent and intuitive.
