I have to ask, how beneficial is it getting a quad-xenon vs an i7 for a server? What ways does it benefit?
Xeons are the cream of the i7 crop - the most accurately produced and therefore the most reliable. Xeons are designed to be used in multi-processor setups. Functionally, in a small environment you will not notice the difference.
Resurrecting this thread to ask a question for you Cisco buffs: Anyone ever seen a 2611XM with only one installed FastEthernet port? Because I seem to have come across one. [t]http://i.imgur.com/dos4csw.jpg[/t] I can't find any documentation on this sort of thing, and I don't see any of those little ports for sale. It looks like I could just solder one back in but hey what do I know.
I need to find out if the IT director here at city hall will let me take pictures of our IBM I-Series. The configuration we have is pretty interesting setup; though it's cluttered out the ass and I want to go made with zip ties.

The sticker that labels the ports is missing, and usually covers that hole. If the router has two FastEthernet ports, the sticker is different and doesn't cover the port. Saves on production costs since they only need to manufacture one body for both models.
The 2610XM Models only have one Fast Ethernet port. The 2611's have two. Could always get a FastEthernet HWIC?
The 2610XM Models only have one Fast Ethernet port. The 2611's have two. Could always get a FastEthernet HWIC?
Yes, I knew this. There's an off chance it's a 2620XM or 2650XM, but it won't make a difference. The DRAM is bad so I'm just trying to find out exactly what stuff to order. I've had some difficulty tracking down a WIC that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I'm looking for like $10/unit, but I don't think that's gonna happen. I see a HWIC-4ESW that occasionally runs <$100 but I'll be damned if I won't just purchase a new router instead.

Completely, one of the perks of being me I suppose.
I don't even know how you would fake a vcenter license
It isn't that different from Photoshop, Office or any other software really..

So, since making all the changes I wanted to make the rack hasn't moved around substantially, there's another storage server in there now and the two NAS units are gone, but I can't really be bothered to take another photo, these things are a pain in the ass to do... Anyone got a patch panel they don't need? :v:

Ports on the back. The switch at the top is also at the back now. [editline]10th May 2013[/editline]
Anyone got a patch panel they don't need? :v:
Yes, but I'm in the UK.
Yes, but I'm in the UK.
Damn. I really don't want to spend $45 on a panel and punchdown tool. I just dropped $200 last week so I'm feeling sheepish about spending money. [editline]August 10th 2013[/editline] fuckit I bought one
Got these this weekend (and accompanying enclosure), each node has 2x Intel Xeon L5520 and 24GB RAM. It will make a fine VMWare cluster

Whoops.
I'll post a pic of the ones @ school in september, you will all cry, it's even worse then my HeinPC.
My home server (used for local dev etc.) is apparantly a DNS record for some car care thing... Dynamic IP's huh? :v: (It's like every 6 months or a year sometimes before it changes)
I feel like I'm doing life wrong... what do you people do for a living that you can afford stuff like this?
I'm pretty sure its a C6100, which are fairly affordable for what they are if you purchase second hand - http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-POWEREDGE-C6100-XS23-TY3-2U-4-x-HOT-PLUG-NODES-8-x-2-26GHz-QC-L5520-96GB-/121096441968?pt=COMP_EN_Servers&hash=item1c31e91070
I'm considering moving my Phenom II Windows Server NAS / server thing to ESXi, but I've got a pretty sinister issue: all of my data is on a windows server 2012 storage space spanned over two drives (yes kill me I'm poor and really need to invest in a RAID5), which is fine but I can't find a decent way of connecting a physical drive directly to a ESX VM without a buttload of hacks and workarounds. The only other option I can think of is to get a Microserver and use that as essentially a mini-SAN for ESXi, but A: that's a buttload of a waste of power, B: that's a buttload of a waste of disk i/o, and C: god fucking damnit HP you increased the price by £100 they're like £225 now. Can you think of any ways around this? I'd like to migrate to ESXi A: to piss around with windows server a bit more, especially domain joining the VMs, and B: for Nagios, which is fucking impossible to get on windows or even a suitable alternative without using Cygwin I also need a really fucking cheap PCIE x16 GPU to go into said server after the 7600gt that was in there had a fan that decided to become the noisiest fucking thing this side of a TV on Fox News, which is temporarily out and being replaced with a bitchin' fast 2600xt. Any suggestions?

If you just want the data off it, throw those drives into your desktop PC, share them out and mount them on the VM. If you want a cheaper alternative to the microserver, buy someone's old PC with a decent motherboard, throw a low power CPU in it (Celerons should be cheap) and create a FreeNAS box out of it. For my Hyper-V / Server 2012 box, I just went on ebay and bought the cheapest GPU with a VGA connection on it since the motherboard I used didn't have integrated graphics. It's a Radeon X800, though if you want a new card, an 8400GS or a Radeon HD 5450 would work great.
