Do you want to just move the data over or permanently have access to it? If you just want the data off it, throw those drives into your desktop PC, share them out and mount them on the VM. If you want a cheaper alternative to the microserver, buy someone's old PC with a decent motherboard, throw a low power CPU in it (Celerons should be cheap) and create a FreeNAS box out of it.
I need permanent access to the drives from the VM, the data in the storage space is easily bigger than any other storage I have access to. I want to try and keep everything in 1 box if possible to cut down on space and power usage

$700 is still quite a lot of money to just throw away for a server, to someone like me of course that doesn't have any use for so much power.
I just got handed an RFID card that will get me into our data center. Pics coming sometime!

Same here. Just finished my first day as a data center intern for the summer.

We only have those two rows, that picture is the hot aisle.
Also my Cisco rack is finally "done", got my patch panel installed for consoling into each device (props to XL5 for the idea). I'll have pictures of that sometime.

One of our NetApp cabs. We have 10 or 11 of these. Not all of them are full though. Those are all 450GB 15k SAS disks.

I count 144 drives in that left hand image alone, which makes ~63.2TB of space
mmmmmmm

I counted 77 DS4243's (pictured above) in our NetApp room. 77 disk shelves * 24 disks * 450 GB per disk = 831,600 GB = 812.109375 TB of raw disk space. I can't give a figure on the usable storage, as I'm not sure how the RAID groups are configured on them.
where is our petabyte drives when we need them.
It's hard to get a good picture... the light is low and there isn't a lot of room. I passed on getting pics of the server racks. Most of them are only half full.

"Company policy". I asked if I could have one of the dozen monitors sitting in the pile a month ago, and they were very hesitant.
My friend works in an installation company, they get asked to take as much as they can when they replace equipment, he came home with six screens and a shitload of mousemats because that's all he wanted, shame he didn't call me regarding the computers.

Couldn't find the picture of him working on a patching wall or whatever it's called, at least it was a room literally covered in cables while they were working on it. Here's a demonstration of how to strip datacables.

EUUGH those network racks at the end of the aisle make me itch. But I can't really complain, our network aisle isn't much better.. fucking support crew doesn't know how to properly patch cables
also, we use those same ortronics rack organizers, I love those things.

New backups cluster at work is nearing one petabyte. And we STILL run out of fucking space. I posted a pic of our gluster at the bottom of the 1st page but it's expanded since.

Same here. They're great. We use Corning for our fiber panels, which are also quite nice.
If only people properly documented the cabling when they installed shit...

We actually just installed those (upgraded to PoE). We had a contractor come in, and he only got through the upper right hand chunk until both him and our network admin both said fuckit :v:

Cisco lab v3. Added a patch panel for console access (thanks again, XL5), and maybe other stuff later. Found a random 1U frame laying around at a friend's house so now it's "cable management". Also replaced my 2610s with 2611XMs. I'm pulling this picture out during my lunch with the head of the networking department, hopefully it shows that I'm willing to learn, dedicated, etc.

Mah VPS.
And yes... I do have 8589934592 TB of ram. :v:
On a serious note, I have 1GB of ram all to my self and 2 cores. Paid £45 for the whole year which I was pleased with. I have a 1GBPs connection or a 10GBPS connection cant remember and a 3-4TB (again cant remember :v: ) bandwidth limit. Thrilled with the performance im getting out of it.
Only grouch I have against it is it only has a 20GB SSD but I dont really care.

What host is that with? Because I'm paying £40 a year for 512MB, which seems sucks compared to yours. I've also been thinking about upgrading to 1GB.

Iperweb I have had nothing but a perfect experience with them. I dont think they have any OpenVZ packages in stock at the moment but I have opened a support ticket to see why its not on the list anyway. Il let you know what they say :)
He said they are out of stock of them right now but they do get them in occasionally. They do XEN ones for £50 with the same specs though!

I shoulda taken a shot of the 18 servers I installed yesterday. They HAD to all be installed & online within 2 days for a client. That was hell...

New DL380 Gen8's?
New DL380 Gen8's?
You bet! They wouldn't talk to our Altiris server because our version of WinPE is a Vista environment and apparently the NICs in those things don't like it. I had to image them all via USB with my own custom WinPE, then join them to our domain etc etc. It took a full two weeks to get those and 12 other sets of drives imaged, ten G5's and two G6's.
So: Gen8 + WinPE 2 = no
Finally gave into upgrading to a decent server. Found it on craigslist rather cheap and it has a little bit older of a processor, but it's more power than I'll probably need for quite some time and better than my P4.

This isn't my exact server, but it's one exactly like it. You couldn't tell the difference, externally.
I got 4 of these:
- E3-1230v2
- 32GB ECC Server Memory
- Samsung 843 256GB Solid State Drive
2 of these:
- E3-1270v2
- 32GB ECC Server Memory
- Samsung 843 256GB Solid State Drive
- 500GB Western Digital Enterprise 7200RPM
2 of these on the way, next week:
-E3-1270v3
-32GB ECC Server Memory
- Samsung 843 256GB Solid State Drive
All of them on Centos 6, that's the only thing I like at the moment.

So you're saying you've got 2950s and DL360 G3s with E3 chips in them?
Come on man.
Ok so ya'll might get this a lot but what do I actually do with my server? I out a garry's mod server on it but I honestly don't really play it at all and I feel like I just wasted some money as I honestly have no use for it at all. Any ideas?
