Ok so ya'll might get this a lot but what do I actually do with my server? I out a garry's mod server on it but I honestly don't really play it at all and I feel like I just wasted some money as I honestly have no use for it at all. Any ideas?
Backups, website, email, get a VPN for remote storage, etc
Backups, website, email, get a VPN for remote storage, etc
I have a external hard drive for back ups, no real need for a web site although i currently have shared web hosting for no real reason except for the email as i dont know how to set up an email service, and i dont need remote storage.
What? So you're saying you've got 2950s and DL360 G3s with E3 chips in them? Come on man.
Hey, that's just what I've been told. One of the staff from the data-center told me my rack looked like that.
Might as well get some extra help in here
Now that I have vacation, I decided I might as well buy some cable and put the server in the other room because I'm tired of the humming and increased heat in the room (when both computers are running, and possible guests with their computers). Should I buy cat6 or cat5e? - It's going up to the ?ceiling? and then into another room into a keystone (on both ends). Cable will max be 15 meters. Also, UTP or FTP? I checked one site and they only had CAT6 FTP - is that normal? And finally, is there any differences between hooking up UTP or FTP - or is it just some extra metal making sure there is less interference?
(crosspost) Also, other than making normal cables, all I need is a keystone - punchdown tool (depends on keystone I know) & some weird cover right? Anything changed regarding keystone on CAT6? (and does CAT6 really just work like cat5e - just better insulation?

As for CAT5e/CAT6, it indeed comes down to isolation, personally I'd go for CAT6 because "Why not", its not that more expensive and if in the future you plan to run more cables next to it it will prevent crosstalking.

It's just windows 8 with some added server functions. Why they thought Metro on a server operating system would be "cool" is beyond me. I deployed it on a VM for about a week then got sick of it and uninstalled.. just stick with 2008 luckily I didn't waste my money because I get free keys from work.

But I believe they added some other cool stuff you just don't use.
Like?
Eh.. actually looks like most of it is improvements. But they're good. These are like top 5 results or something
Starting a bit of a backup box project. Getting tired of manually backing up files and swapping disks while trying to keep an organized file structure, backing up incrementally like this is getting ridiculous. The plan is to reuse an old server with a few newer components, since the server will only be turned on once a month the power consumption isn't an issue. The disks will be distributing the space over mhddfs, which is great for maintaining file structure while not resulting in complete data loss if a disk dies. Its fairly basic but effective for how I want to backup my data. It's not easy being green - 7TB total. Tyan S2466 with dual Athlon 1900+ processors and 1GB RAM. [t]http://imageshack.us/a/img547/6506/nat5.png[/t] 8 port Supermicro SATA card will be driving the big disks, supports 3TB too! Will also be utilizing a dual port 1Gbit Intel NIC and a spare ATI Rage II card. [t]http://imageshack.us/a/img801/6416/dbe0.png[/t] Two never opened WD2170 enterprise drives in RAID1 for the OS driven by a PERC2. 2.17GB of old SCSI will be more than enough. Now I just need to hunt down a rackmount chassis. The build is basically made out of spare parts and freebies from work so I haven't actually dropped any cash on it yet. I'm sure a decent PSU and chassis are probably going to change that though.
In the unlikely event that you live in Michigan, there's a local guy selling about a dozen full size racks for $35 each.
In the unlikely event that you live in Michigan, there's a local guy selling about a dozen full size racks for $35 each.
Rack is already covered (pictures on first page), but the 4U chassis are a bit more difficult to find used.

Some network stuff - I know its not servers but really this thread really shouldn't be on page 2. Just finished up configuring a site to site VPN for a client. These TZ 205's are an absolute dream, I don't know how Cisco's SOHO products are even still around. If I recall correctly last time I setup a couple of Cisco ASA boxes you have to draw a pentagram on the floor in virgin blood, arrange 12 candles around the pentagram, place the ASA box in the center then skin a dead cat and offer its pelt to the witch-goddess. On a Sonicwall its just a few clicks. You could probably even just ask it nicely and it would configure itself for you. What a cool little VPN router. How are you guys finding Windows Server 2012? Considering running putting up some virtualized servers with it to run alongside our current infrastructure to see if its worth moving across to it. We are running Windows 7 on all client machines with no intention of going to 8 anytime soon. We are also fully virtualized using XenServer.

I'd say stick with 2008. But I honestly don't use most of the new features 2012 offers and I didn't like the new block page/metro/whatever-the-fuck-its-called. [editline]27th July 2013[/editline] At the same time, I'd say if you have a copy of it and you can throw up a test server, do it. See how you like it yourself.

Yay Pi server! [img_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/SWZfRTL.png[/img_thumb] I don't have an acutal picture of it, but it looks very out of place just balencing in the back of a rack. Maybe I'll try and find a 1U mounting bracket for it =P
