What do you do with all of the "retired" units?
Either put them into service elsewhere, or put them up on eBay. [editline]12th August 2013[/editline] I figured I'd ask here since this is where the server people live: Do you guys know anything about tape drives for backup? Our NAS RAID is sending us bad flags at work and I've been tasked to put together some sort of high density backup system, and tape drives seem to be the only option.

I would highly avoid them. How much space do you need? Just build another system and install OpenNAS. The specs can be utter shit, you just need a decent Raid card or a mobo that can support enough drives to store all your data. That's honestly the cheapest way, prebuild NAS's are expensive as shit

Weekly backups are a must, so there's really no other option. It's not just for redundancy, the RAID has that built in(RAID 10), it's also for archival purposes. They're also far faster than hard drives.

We have several fumble-fingers for IT people(not in the least of which is me. I dropped a U2711 while transporting it).
Hey guys, I am not supposed to take a picture of any hardware at work, but this isn't hardware right. [t]http://i.imgur.com/zNp66hj.jpg[/t]
That's juicy.

I suppose if you're wanting a solution for off-site backup then tapes are safer to haul around. Also LTO-6's aren't any faster than typical 7200RPM drives. WD RE4 drives test with max speeds of 144MB/s

[editline]13th August 2013[/editline] Also let's not mention LTO-6's great security, hardware compression, and speeds that average around 160MB/s peaking around 220MB/s. Backup media is generally better at backing up than general purpose storage.
what a clusterfuck
You think? Cables are tidy, only thing i can think of is the 2012 server not being under the table.
You think? Cables are tidy, only thing i can think of is the 2012 server not being under the table.
It looks like everything is in such a small place though.
It looks like everything is in such a small place though.
It is, we don't have anywhere else to store them. We got a good cooling system though, it's freezing standing in there.
It is, we don't have anywhere else to store them. We got a good cooling system though, it's freezing standing in there.
That's good at least
It is, we don't have anywhere else to store them. We got a good cooling system though, it's freezing standing in there.
We've got the opposite problem here. We've got a few hundred square feet free in the Server Room, but the previous owners of the building decided to put a fucking SKYLIGHT up in the server room! In Los Angeles! Where it's 105*f outside! And 80* in the server room! Eventually the skylight will be replaced with a direct output from a dedicated air conditioner.
Hey look at what I found out my stock room at work with all the old stuff http://i.imgur.com/SGr7dsY.jpg
Upgraded my server: [t]http://i.imgur.com/rs6XRN8.jpg[/t] I replaced the case with a Bitfenix Merc since my old case was an old POS and didn't have many spots for fans and only 2 hard drive bays. I also threw in an 80GB HDD that I had laying around and the new 3TB Western Digital Red that I just got today. Specs: 2.66 GHz Core 2 Quad Q8400 8GB DDR2 HDDs: 80GB, 500GB, 1TB, 3TB Radeon X800 Windows Server 2012, Ubuntu Server in Hyper-V
I hate seeing this thread on the 2nd page Bump with some sexy SAN goodness I just racked. I'd say it was worth the 3 people it took us to rack the 400 pound monstrosity. [IMG_thumb]http://i.imgur.com/WIE7SvK.jpg[/IMG_thumb] 1x Dell M1000e enclosure with 16 half height blades. (Client has another one on the way) 1x Dell EqualLogic PS4110 with 12 3TB HDD's 1x Dell EqualLogic PS6110S with 24 400GB SSD's Oh and an older 1U on top running windows serv 2008 to be used for management.

The only thing sexier is a properly managed core switch. Server team "gave" me this little guy to work with. They want the entire network monitoring system to run on it, but it only had 2GB of RAM. I fixed that quickly. Above it you can see the four Cisco UCS blades we got for free after ordering well over $250,000 in ASA's. [t]http://i.imgur.com/K15Xqzx.jpg[/t]

We also use a service from a security firm called Cymru which monitors all network traffic on our global network. Don't know the details of it though, it's fairly new
Thought I'd snap a couple of pics before I stitch it up. Re purposing gear! This thing will be encoding 1080p HD video to push to an RTMP server for a few webcasts next month (Hence asking about VPSs in the questions thread). Intel Core i5 2500 4GB DDR3 (Depending on testing, This might get bumped to 8GB, We'll see) 30GB Corsair Nova SSD 400GB Samsung HDD Ti FireWire card (For the Audio feed) Just waiting on some HD-SDI capture cards and a low profile GT620 (CUDA) The choice of SSD is more for ruggedness than speed, hence it being a cheapo one. This rack will be thrown about a bit. Same goes for the wire management, more to prevent things from moving than anything. Not sure what to do about the ram yet, maybe bolt in some sort of metal bracket to support it (There's two convenient holes to the side for the rack rails that I could use). I want to get a proper case for mah server some day
'Tis this case here: http://www.xcase.co.uk/X-Case-RM-204-Short-p/case-x-case-rm204s.htm Chose the short one because touring racks tend to only be around 500mm deep.

It's great once you get it running but it's quite the project to get all 75 of our sites imported and categorized.
The post man just dropped this off... I suppose this is a server. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/286964/IMG_2189.JPG[/t]

[t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/286964/IMG_2189.JPG[/t]
I actually just went to a luncheon about "BYOD" which actually turned out to more along the lines of "BUY WATCHGUARD FIREWALLS, Y'ALL".
From what I've been told the "Fireware" software on these is pretty crap. This one is destined for PfSense.
Picked this up yesterday + 12 Drive SAN w/ disks. [IMG_THUMB]http://i.imgur.com/ZEyCA8l.jpg[/IMG_THUMB] Sorry the quality is toilet, I shall take better pictures if/when I can be bothered.
