alright then
Lenovo Thinkpad T420 or HP Elitebook 8460p? Both with 8 GB ram and SSD, but I want the one with good keyboard and good reliability.

I hear good things about Thinkpad
I hear not so good things from HP
You can't be more vague than that. I heard nothing about these things, and if someone hears something about a laptop, it's more likely a complaint. If you hear from your friend that his HP just died, it doesn't mean everyone else's die in the same timeline on average.

But it seems it just falls into the category of which one do you prefer category, nevermind.

I hear a lot of things in class
I'm really one of two tabletop hybrid users in class, with a lot of different brands of laptops among everyone
They're both pretty excellent machines. I prefer the T420, as I was between the same two a while back. The Lenovo's keyboard is just fantastic.
Having memory problems, I'm that idiot that buys high end hardware, runs a bunch of high performance required programs simultaneously without checking that I'll have enough memory and then everything goes wrong to such an extent that I can't end process of the crashed programs or even taskkill them
I'm getting this event (sometimes I black screen but don't go unresponsive, i.e. I can hear audio and responses to input but no visual) but also sometimes programs just become unresponsive and refuse to have their process ended (virtual memory issue?) When I looked I had these settings.

I guess my question is, are these two separate memory problems and how do I fix them? Should I set my paging file to be even bigger, like 4096, or should I leave it to be automatically managed? Also if there could be any other problems because I probably wouldn't know about them
I just got a TECLAST X98 Pro and i was wondering if there are any useful programs for laptop (tablet) users. Like something to save battery.
I have an Intel DP67BG motherboard and when I plug my 770 into it - it doesn't boot, there's 3 beeps about 10 seconds apart followed by a rapid beep and signal to the monitor goes. BIOS is updated and it works with the GTX560 I have. Any advice? The 770 works on my AsRock Pro3 in the other PC too.
PSU is 700w as well.
Build it works in is asrock P67 Pro3, 8GB RAM, i5 2500k and a 650W PSU, x1 400GB HDD (has previously had x2 1TB HDDs though)
Build it doesn't work in is Intel DP67BH, 32GB Ram, i7 2600k @ 3.4GhZ, x2 1tb HDDs.
I've got a question for you guys about a keyboard. Looking at buying a new one, want to upgrade from the one I bought when I built my machine. My current keyboard is decent, but its cheap as shit and it doesn't have many extra features that I look for in a keyboard.

Here is the one I was thinking about getting:

I like the media keys and the audio jacks. I know you guys have hard-ons for mechanical keyboards but its not in the cards for me at the moment.
Anybody have any other suggestions?

Are you writing off mechanicals because you don't want them or they're too expensive with media keys and audio jacks?
I posted this in the wrong thread 2 days ago, but:
Windows System Assessment Tool started by itself and disabled Aero, then started using 50%+ CPU power. What the shit? According to the Google, it's a weekly scheduled task, but this is the second time I've noticed this happen. (Aero did disable a couple times before, but I never opened the task manager to see why.)
Should I get a Noctua NH-D15? I have a Corsair H100i that rattles like hell sometimes and while it rattles, it doubles my idle temps to 60c. I don't want to dick with Corsair's RMA so I'm gonna scrap it, even if that means wasting $110. I've heard the stories of RMAing their units only to get ones as bad or worse.
what part of the h100i is rattling? and are you sure the thing is secured properly?
what part of the h100i is rattling? and are you sure the thing is secured properly?
It's the pump. I know for an absolute fact as I've disconnected every fan in the case, including the radiator fans, to see what it was. I've also tried letting the radiator sit upright to let air in the system collect to the top, and the rad is mounted to the top of the case.
It still could be air, but when it rattles, it's really loud. Sounds a bit like the pump turbine(?) catching the inside of the pump housing.

Well, both really. I've been perfectly happy with my membrane keyboards in the past, but I suppose if I could find a reliable mechanical with all the things I wanted on it, and that was in my price range, I would be game for checking it out.

The 8460p has a great keyboard, spring for an 8470 if you can for ivy bridge though. I've seen one fall from 6ft onto its hinge and it still opened normally with no damage to the LCD

I thought I broke my T420 one day doing a similar thing. It just kinda opened all the way, there on the tile, and I picked it up and it was fine.
I have this one

very happy with it, though I haven't owned a whole lot of office chairs through out my life yet. this is definitely the most expensive I've owned.
Ended up dropping $735+tax ($800 ugh) on a steelcase leap. Had a coupon from work (so that's down from $919 without taxes). It also happens to be the same chairs we have at work (its a mix of leap, think, and amia. Though I have a leap at work). Since I have it already at work at least I know I like it.

This seems to be getting pretty good reviews, though I'm not sure if you want discrete media keys or if you're fine with the function-shortcut.
winsat is the task called in task scheduler

Yeah I found that out, it just seems really strange that it hasn't done it (often?) before, despite the scheduler saying it runs the same time every week.

Hmm. Thats quite interesting. I'll add it to the list for consideration! Thank you!

8460p is typically a little cheaper than the T420 at used market value (eBay), with a higher resolution screen and a worse keyboard / clitmouse
Thinkpad has a better keyboard and sometimes better screens but finding ones with good screens will set you back $30-50 or more than an equivalent 8460p
besides re-installing windows, is there anyway to decrease the size of my WinSxS folder? It's getting bigger and wasting more of tablets drive space...

Run Disk Cleanup and mark the Windows Updates option.
So my PC is pretty overdue for an upgrade and I have picked out some new parts I want to change over. I also want to add an SSD.

Does this seem sufficient? I'm wanting to run most games at max settings at 1080p. Only thing I'm unsure about is the motherboard, there's so many different ones and they seem like they all do the same thing so I picked that one because there's a good amount of USB 3.0 and I won't really ever need SLI.
Actually should I just go Skylake 6600K? It would mean I would need some new RAM but I'd be future proofed.
Would a i7-6700K be a sensible upgrade to a i7-2600 (Non-K) CPU? I'm running SLI 970's GPU's. I would also have to buy a new motherboard and probably DDR4 ram while im at it. I might be able to get a free copy of windows and upgrade it to 10 but i'm not sure.

Been doing a bit more experimenting, if I want the latest hardware I'm gonna have to shell out a bit more.

Just noticed the PC building thread, so this is probably in the wrong place!
Does anyone one know a bit about HFS+? I have a disk with 2 partitions. sda.0 was empty and sda.1 was an NTFS partition. I've just formatted sda.0 to HFS+ in the OS X installer and its caused the second partition to go unallocated (the data is still there though I can see it in testdisk). Should I have expected this or is it unusual? And is there a way to recover the file table or will I have to build a new one?
I'm guessing its because the disk used an MBR before which OSX has overwritten (I was certain it was GPT but i guess not).
