Anybody got any tips on how to improve this build?

Got coolers in reserve, cant go over $1500.
You're going to need a motherboard with a Z97 chipset if you want full, immediate compatibility with the 4790K. Some older motherboards are supposed to have shipped with the compatibility patch in place, but there's always a chance you'll end up with one that doesn't, and if that happens, you'll need an older Haswell CPU to actually get your system up and running long enough to install said update. You'd do well just picking up a better, more recent motherboard.
I really don't know if this is the appropriate place to ask this but
How can I convince my parents that
1). If I try disassembling/assembling my computer it won't just break as they think it will.
2). I don't need to do an entire course to know how to.
3). Just because I might have messed one thing up, the whole computer won't burst into flames.

Do your research. There are hundreds of youtube videos showing how to disassemble almost every model of computer that exists. Make sure you know what you're doing. Then explain to your parents that you've done your due diligence, and researched every aspect you need to, including videos specific to the exact computer you're taking apart.

The thing is, for about, the last 2 weeks or so, I have been doing research. It's more the fact that they think that taking it apart isn't safe.

Speaking of research, you can show them how ifixit makes disassembling almost anything so mind-numbingly simple.

Ask them if they want to learn by watching a video, since it's a very quick thing to learn. That'll either get you nowhere or with them not wanting to deal with it and giving you the go ahead.

I just tried then.
According to them, I have to 'be a qualified electrician' to do as much as even take out/put a RAM card in/out.
They're not willing to listen and they just said that if I do as much as even tamper with it slightly, it's getting sold.
My parents are assholes.

Well it's their hardware, it's their choice. Unfortunately that's just how it is. I do feel for you though, I went through similar things.

Attach the computer to the wall with a Kensington lock and keep the key on your person at all times. Then do the modification.
After a month it will prove to your parents (assuming they don't have a bolt cutter around) that swapping the GPU or whatever you intend to do to your computer won't damage it.

Someone with a degree or certification in electrical engineering technology would not have the type of education that qualifies them to do general system maintenance. Their area of expertise lies somewhere different entirely. Someone can get a job doing the kind of work that you want to on that computer without even having a degree.

It's not really theirs; I paid for it.
I also have to pay for even the simplest things to be installed/repaired, not matter how easy it is. And it's always through the places that they hear from their, 40-50 year old friends at work.
Last year I had to pay $50 just to get a stick of fucking RAM installed.

Have you tried showing them the videos? maybe they think laptops are more complicated

my laptop's pretty easy to bust open, but the procedure is more or less the same
[editline]2nd February 2015[/editline]
Make sure you emphasize that they are being charged $50 for that :v:

Do they also believe that you have to be a certified mechanic to work on a car?
The other day I asked if the Raspberry Pi would be a good way to host my Plex media server.
Wasn't sure because the Pi isn't that powerful.
However with the announcement of the Pi 2, does anybody know if the specs would make it a good solution to host a media server?
Well, the new one is a quadcore now and it has a full gb of RAM. It's also only 35$ so it wont't hurt to try. I had a friend who linked 2 together for a media center.
So I installed Windows 8 to my SSD, and everything's fine, except for the fact that I want to use my old account on my HDD, as that had a LOT of files on and I want to have access to them. Is there any way of getting Windows to set my old account on my HDD to be the one I use now? Sorry if I explained it bad, but I tried.
Hey guys, I'm planning on heading out to track down a better graphics card this week.
My desktop currently is this one, and it can run most games ok, but struggles with certain modern releases, seeing as its a dedicated card.
So, what would be the best one to get with a 300 dollar budget? I'd like to avoid buying a power supply(I still don't 100% understand that), if possible.
I Googled around a bit but nothing definite came up - what I'm wondering is if anyone on the OnePlus: One has trouble with WiFi? Going from campus to home I go through my home connection and the one on campus but when I come home at the end of the day it doesn't connect, even if I scan. I have to reboot my phone in order for it to connect. Advise?
Hi, I'm building a gaming computer next month, I was wondering how well it would perform on heavy games such as MGSV, GTAV, Dying Light, etc and if I should change anything.
MB: MSI Z97-G45
CPU: Intel i7-4790K
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 STRIX
RAM: 12GB DDR3 @ 665MHz
PSU: Corsair CX600
Case: Rosewill Challenger Black ATX Gaming Case
HDD: 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EADX-22TDHB0
I have trouble with my laptop keyboard, again.
Weeks ago I sent it back to the store because the 3EDC keys would not work properly. I had to press them multiple times before the letter would show up.
After I sent it back they said they couldn't find anything and they got it back to me. I got it back home and tried it. It worked flawless for about an hour before it started malfunctioning again.
I directly sent it back to the store and it went on repair, they did nothing again because they couldn't find the problem.
Now they want me to film the problem, but the keys are somehow still working even though they've changed nothing.
How much is his budget? If he has a desktop computer that's going to be replaced then would he be able to carry over any parts to help save costs (hard disk drive, optical drive, RAM ...etc)?
Doesnt really have one.
Reluctant to spend over 600, although I reckon at a push I could encourage 700.
No old PC, switching from console

What the fuck is this, why is it going over the limit
This is right after a reboot, too, it's not like I just changed it
Which 970 do I get?
There's like 50 different versions of the 970.
I'm trying to lower the price on my current rig to get it below 1300

You don't need an i7 or that much RAM in a gaming PC, you won't see any difference in performance. Save some cash and get an i5-4690K and just 8GB of memory instead.
[editline]2nd February 2015[/editline]
You can put the extra money towards an SSD or perhaps a GTX 980 if you plan to play games at resolutions higher than 1920x1080.

I dunno, I was playing Dying Light the other night and it kept reading from the page file a lot and stuttering, I added 4 extra GB of RAM for a total of 12 and the stuttering stopped (the game itself uses 6GB sometimes), so I wouldn't say getting 12GB RAM is a bad choice

Aside from the coolers, the default clock speeds, and the features that the manufacturers include, they're virtually identical. I'd personally lean towards MSI or EVGA, but the choice is ultimately yours.

I suppose that works, but that's mainly due to the fact that it's a poorly-optimized port. There are hardly any other games on the market that demand that much RAM right now.

Well yeah, it is a pretty bad port, but with all the consoles having 8GB memory now I doubt this is gonna be the only one, better safe than sorry, RAM is cheap anyway

The major reason why I have so much RAM in that build is because my current computer has that much, and why buy new RAM when you can scrap your old RAM ~words of a cheapskate.
I will look into the i5-4690K though.
Now my computer's motherboard is just going nuts, saying it's overheating, then shutting itself down. Like within 10 minutes of it starting. I tried putting some new thermal paste on the CPU heatsink...and I guess that's working? I don't know.
Is it worth it to go from a AMD R9 270X to a nVidia 960? Purely from a hardware standpoint, I know drivers are like playing Russian Roulette.
Anyone with a ultra-wide screen, what is it like? For gaming? For content creation (modeling, textures)? I plan on grabbing one.
What would be an ideal spec for a hobby-tier content creation rig? I think I made a mistake with getting the AMD R9 since Blender uses CUDA for acceleration.
What is the absolute lowest streaming settings for video and audio I could push without making a stream a pixelated mess with ear bleedingly bad sound?
