powerline also not an option? wifi is the worst choice for desktops.
Not really. Good AC gear can outplay powerline in many situations. [editline]19th November 2015[/editline] "Wifi sucks" just isn't true anymore. Source: I'm a wireless engineer.
I'm on a dual band AC router and I see 800mbps throughput on the 5ghz band easy. it's double my actual internet speed plus some overhead, so that means that over wifi I could stream high bitrate 1080p video to several users on my local network just over wifi, the source being on wifi as well. nothing is hardwired in this house, and there's always more than enough throughput to where nobody notices any slowdown no matter what. Which is awesome because I remember just recently when I had a router that could barely handle just one wireless device streaming high def video.
What about the couple of thick brick walls between the AP and me situation
then you can go powerline or hook up a multi-AP network
I hate computers. I thought my PSU was faulty so I ordered a replacement, this one still emits a quiet, constant buzz/crackle when i lean around to the back of my PC to listen to it. Is this normal? It's an EVGA Supernova 650w. And I ordered a Western Digital WD10ezex 1tb to replace my Seagate Barracuda that was dying, It's noisy as fuck and makes constant clunking/rattling noises. Both Western Digital's hard drive checker thing and Crystal Disk Info say it's fine, but the constant clicking and rattling is driving me insane. It's screwed in and not moving, but it just keeps making noise. I had a PC repair guy come out and look at it, and he said it's all normal, but It still seems so unbearably noisy to me. My old drive wasn't exactly whisper quiet, but it didn't sound like someone scraping a plate next to my ear all day. Am I being paranoid, or are all the parts I'm buying shit? I'm seriously considering buying ANOTHER new hard drive just so I can have some peace and quiet.
What about the couple of thick brick walls between the AP and me situation
A good AC AP and receiver might be able to handle that, but multiple layers of old construction tends to be one of those few situations powerline still reigns supreme.
Crossposting from another forum since I barely ever get responses there: I have a MSI Z97 Gaming 7 motherboard and I have enabled Wake on Lan. It works fine, it boots up my PC as it should, but if I shut down my PC after it was booted using WOL, it automatically reboots directly after shutdown, as if the power button is pressed again or a WOL package is received again. This even happens after the PC has been on for 18 hours straight without receiving a single WOL packet. I can't seem to find out why this happens, but it happens using several WOL apps on both my phone and built-in to the router. I'm not sure if this is related.
Check if there were any BIOS updates? Sounds like it could be a bug.
No I am fairly sure I've got the latest.will double check tomorrow
Oops, turns out my BIOS is a year old.
Is a 2gb 960 GTX for $170 a good deal? I'm looking to upgrade my gfx card to line up with my system better to play fallout 4, but other recent modern games don't really interest me. Is it worth the $20 or so over the 950? I'm fine with not max settings on games, I really don't play that often and have used a 260GTX for a ton of years and it's been just fine for most of what I play
Ok I paid £150 for a Radeon HD 5870 a few years ago and I'm looking for a replacement, however for that price all current cards I've found are outspecced by the 5870 in everything but TDP, so I'm guessing I must've got a pretty good deal at the time. Any recommendations?

I'm on my 4th RMA in 1 month, tried corsair and XFX and had various fan/squeal issues. It's fucked me right off.

Ok so I'm using DD-WRT to bridge two old linksys routers I bought at the local secondhand computer store for $12 a pop. I've already successfully flashed DD-WRT onto the first one, and have set my modem to bridge mode and plugged the second one into it to serve as the main router for the house. Complicating matters, I'm using a Linksys RE1000 to repeat the signal, since the house has crazy brick walls and generally hates wifi. Goal is to have internet go from Modem -> Router #1 via ethernet cable, from router #1-> Repeater via wifi, from Repeater -> DD-WRT flashed router (#2), and then from Router #2 to Raspberry Pi via ethernet cable. So far I have everything working except for the DD-WRT'd router's bridge connection. Any suggestions? I'm just going to keep trying until I figure it out, but it is kind of a bitch.

Is the single fan version of the 950 much different from the two fan one? It's quite a bit cheaper
Okay, seemingly dumb question here, but before I spend money I want to be certain. My desktop's mobo fried recently. It's a 5 year old Dell XPS, here are the details. Since then, I've changed the GPU and PSU. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/product-support/servicetag/CF7CNL1/configuration Instead of buying a newer mobo and a new processor, my current plan is to track down the same model of motherboard and just plug and play with my current setup to last for at least another year (or two if possible). I'm trying to track down the exact same model of motherboard right now. However, I can't find it on Dell's support page (linked above). I grabbed some numbers from the mobo to try and figure out what model it is, and the closest I have found is this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Genuine-Dell-Studio-XPS-8100-Motherboard-i3-i5-i7-DDR3-LGA1156-DH57M01-G3HR7-/151879067769?hash=item235cb2a879 I don't know how I can absolutely confirm it though. Any ideas or pointers? Here's a sticker and some identifiers that I've been using in my research. [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/51353469/20151116_191607.jpg[/t]
Kind of a followup question to this post. Assembled the new computer (I moved everything into a new case, the jam was getting cramped) and checked the connections which seem fine. When I turn it on, it shuts down shortly after. I'm able to get the boot screen and I can get to the bios, but if I try to run off of a disc or the hdd, it will go for a few seconds and shut down. I'm double checking the connections at the moment just to be sure. I really don't know what the problem could be though. *edit* Apparently it also happens even when I'm in Bios. It will just turn off after a few seconds and I'm at a complete roadblock here.
I'm experiencing 100% RAM and Disk Usage on boot and while from what I've read, it's Windows' way of dealing with my low HDD space it's severely affecting my ability to work as programs are constantly hanging up and unable to store any data in my ram. [t]http://puu.sh/lsHme/796e68c2b6.png[/t] What can I do? [editline]20th November 2015[/editline] Ignore the chrome processes, it's exactly the same on boot with the only non-integral programs I have load on start being Teamviewer, Corsair Link and Razer Synapse. [editline]20th November 2015[/editline] Fuck me it's a Windows 10 memory leak caused by the "show me tips on windows 10" function. Switched it off, rebooted and disk useage went to 0% and ram to 23%
Are the fans on graphics cards intake or outflow fans?
I'm trying to extend a partition, using the disk management built into windows 10 on a hard drive that used to contain my OS that I have formatted and deleted other partitions off of. When I try to extend the partition to the newly unallocated space I get a popup saying is will convert the basic disk into a dynamic disk. After I agree to doing that I get a error saying that There is not enough space available on the disk to complete this action. Am I doing anything wrong or should I try a different method?
Isn't it Webm for Gits now?
nah, webm for bakas It is a project spawned out 4chan getting webm support, so I'm not suprised
So I bought an R9 390 the other day, specifically the PowerColor PCS+ Radeon R9 390. I love the card, and the fans are super quiet, but it makes the horrible buzzing sound as it gets under more and more load. It's not buzzsaw load, but it is significantly loader than my case fans depending on what is running on it. I tested the card in my friend's computer to make sure that it was not my PSU, and the buzzing still occurred. I'm wondering if it may go away after awhile or if I should RMA it to PowerColor or Newegg. CPU: 2500k MB: Gigabyte GA-Z68MA-D2H-B3 PSU: Cooler Master GX 650W
Isn't that coil whine?
Isn't that coil whine?
It doesn't sound like much of whine per se, just a constant buzz. It seems to be the worst in Alien Isolation, and quieter in Rocket League. Non existent in Fallout 4.
Bad fan bearing?
