Try the same solution I posted for GreenBH, if your drive isn't starting up and the only solution you can find is completely wiping it, it could be that a part of the Windows OS files are corrupted.
You can most definitely find video players on the Play Store that handle MKV files, I'm not sure of any specifically but I'm sure there are some free ones out there.
is there any possible way to access my old files?
i tried taking the hdd out and plugging it into my parents computer via usb but that doesn't seem to be working
When you plug it in, does it appear in Disk Management or Device Manager?
I can help you with my solution, I tried the whole motion joy controller stuff, but that would fail more often than for it to ever fucking install drivers properly, so Instead I used this http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-XInput-Wrapper-for-DS3-and-Play-com-USB-Dual-DS2-Controller
Basically it just turns your ps3 controller into a xbox controller and then it picks up flawlessly in basically every game out there, only issue i ran into is once installed it always assumed to be plugged in so my other controller aka an actual xbox controller would always be recieved as player 2, in the software scp driver, I just clicked uninstall, and then whenever I needed both I would install it back in, takes seconds to install.
Hopefully that helps you out.
I tried this method, it works, thanks! I did run into the same weird problem with a Xbox360 controller however. I managed to flip the players around by messing with the start and stop for the ScpServer.exe. It'll take me some more messing around with to get the exact method because it made the 360 controller go player 1 no problem but getting the PS3 back into player 1 was a weird hassle that I don't know how I managed it.
it comes up in device manager
i can't check if it's in disk management as it won't even load
i should also mention that trying to access it through my computer makes it more or less infinitely load and more often than not stop explorer from responding
I was thinking something similar. Thing is, I'll be watching .mkv files with subtitles and Android hasn't really ever liked them that much. No idea if they'd work well on a Tab S2.
You could also always get a Windows tablet.
fuck it i give up
i'm just reformatting my computer and seeing what i can recover with various programs

Did you download Crystal Disk Info on your parents computer and see if it says your HDD has any errors?
Are you able to find the Drive letter it's currently using when plugged into the second computer?
If you can get the drive letter, you can then run chkdsk on it properly if it's not showing up in Windows Explorer.
it looks like my laptop hdd is completely gone, i can't even wipe+reinstall windows. it takes like 20 minutes just for the install prompts to come up
guess i have to buy a new hdd
I'm thinking of replacing my 2 AMD 6970s with a Single GTX 970, is it worth it?

Good idea but how big is your psu ? If you have a pretty beefy psu go with a r9 390 instead
Good idea but how big is your psu ? If you have a pretty beefy psu go with a r9 390 instead
come on, the 390 doesn't take THAT much more power. at full load, their power draws are almost similar. anything that can fuel a gtx 970 can power a 390 too.
[editline]2nd January 2016[/editline]
or maybe I'm wrong on that. could of sworn I saw some benchmark showing almost similar power draw. about a 50w difference at load on average
does anyone know any software to turn a mouse and keyboard into a game controller? i can only find a shittonne of programs that do the opposite
Does the Dell Display Manager also update the display's firmware or something?
I've noticed that my Daisychain setup works actually properly now without glitching out, and for shits and giggles I tried connecting my laptop to it. Turns out the monitor DOES properly transmit the EDID now through HDMI.
I've been digging around in the settings, and while there used to be a MST related option in the Other Settings menu on the OSD, that one's gone now.
Quick question :
My PC already have 16gb of ram, and I have an old PC that holds 6gb of it.
Can I add these 6gb to my new computer, or is it an obligation to have a power of two like 6, 8, 16, 32 etc...
(both are DDR3 but not the same frequency)

Identical sticks work best but it should work.
I backed up my dad's old PC to a VHD. His old system had an AMD Phenom II X2 230. Now, I can open his VHD on my own PC (which has an i7 4790k, so totally different architecture) using Virtual Box and run his PC as if it is his old PC.
When attempting to run it on his old PC, which now has a new Windows installation, it keeps giving me errors like "A required device isn't connected or not accessible
Error: 0xc000000e"
On the bottom, it provides me with two options, "Press Enter to try again", or "PRess F8 for boot settings". If I press either of those buttons, I get the following error:
"The executable or operatingsystem can't be loaded because a required file is missing or contains errors.
File: \WINDOWS\system32\winload.exe
Error: 0xc000000e"
Why does the exact same VHD work on one PC and not on another? Both share the same version of VirtualBox, the only significant difference is that one PC is now using an FX-8150 (not working) and the other is using an i7 4790k (working)
Please help
I was relocating my Pictures, Documents, etc. folders from my OS SSD to my big HDD, and in the process Windows somehow decided that The Videos folder is also the documents folder. In other words, the thumbnail is still for the videos folder but it's called documents and its contents are identical to the documents folder. Restoring to defaults does nothing to fix this.
I honestly don't understand how I'm having so much fps problems with Witcher 3 on medium settings. It feels fine sometimes than returns to being choppy again when I am in the open-world.
My specs:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4460 CPU @ 3.20GHz
Video Card 1: Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600
Video Card 2: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Memory: 8.0 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 Professional Edition (build 9600), 64-bit
The only thing I can see that could be WAY better is the processor. But I wonder if It actually makes all that much of a difference.
Nah. That processor is pretty fine.
Checked temps?
On the latest drivers?
You sure you ain't using the integrated graphics?
I checked on GPU-Z and apparently my dedicated graphics card is around 43 C. While my CPU cores are around 38-39 C.
My Card has the lastest drivers and yes I'm pretty sure I'm not using the integrated graphics. Unless there's a way to change which graphics I'm using besides connecting my HDMI cable to the respective port.
If those are idle temps you should just jump into game and let it sit for at least 15 minutes then check temps.
I'll assume you've plugged the HDMI cable from your monitor into your GTX 970 then.
The only other real thing is settings and if you're playing with vsync or not.
So tested again and In-game my GPU is sitting at around 63 C. Cpu cores at 51-56 C. And V-sync I only have really enabled on my cards global settings not in-game.
Are you forcing it on constantly?
What do you mean?
It was set to be on always. Is better to just to turn it off and then change in-game?
yeah it looks better now, thanks. I was actually experiencing some lag when I started playing but only got really noticeable once I reached the bigger cities with more stuff on it.
I'm planning on getting a new computer; My current one is pretty much obsolete.
What files should I backup to a portable drive? I figure I would want to backup my Steam program files and documents, but I don't know what else.
And is there a good way to do this?
Does anyone know of a good GUI SQL client? I only really need it to work with MySQL (I have working clients for everything else) but supporting MSSQL, Postgres and/or SQLite would be nice. Focus should be on writing queries, not trying to manipulate data through the GUI - I basically just need some tabbed editors with run buttons.
I had been using MySQL Workbench, but the old version now crashes on W10 and the new version drops connections in under a minute regardless of settings (and has a horrible UI now).
I gave HeidiSQL a spin but it has an animated donate button in the menu bar, and no way Google knows to hide it.

I really don't see how the "animated donate button" bothers you. To be fair, I have never even noticed it, just booted up HeidiSQL after I read your post and saw it for the first time. It only changes text every now and then, it's nothing flashy or distracting imo...

Those are pretty much your options.
You could, you know, just donate to HeidiSQL. Or patch out the button yourself, if it bothers you that much.
So a few days ago we got a ASUS RT-AC3100 router, and it seems to be limiting our internet speeds to around 5 Mbps down 1 up (both wired and wireless connections). We should be getting 15 down and 1 up, and when I plug directly into our modem that's what I get. I've looked through all of the settings for the router and I can't find anything real obvious that would be limiting it that much. The router does have the ability to limit bandwidth, but it says it's turned off.
I just rebuilt my computer. Kept the old drives but changes motherboard, GPU, CPU, ram. After reinstalling windows and downloading all the games all over again I'm having all kinds of issues. Vermintide seems sometimes gets locked at 30 FPS seemingly for no reason. Killing Floor 2 won't start at all. Mount and Blade Warband has a green glowing skybox. These are all installed on my secondary drive at the moment.
New specs were
MSI Z97
i7-4790K
GTX 980
EDIT: BF4 on the secondary drive also wouldn't boot. I backed up my shit and tried reformatting it. I'm going to re install a game and try again.
EDIT AGAIN: KF2 still won't boot.
I need some help, Firefox suddenly sees FP as an untrusted connection (sec_error_cert_signature_algorithm_disabled), and no amount of furious mashing of the "add security exception" button will convince the lazy bastard that this site is alright. It just dumps me back into the "this connection is not trusted and blah blah blah" page.
I've tried googling similar problems, to no avail. Does anyone else have this issue, and hopefully a way to fix it?
Thanks in advance.
You can see if your HDD is dying by downloading Crystal Disk Info, it'll tell you he "health" of any drives you have plugged in. If there are errors, you can attempt to fix them with chkdsk with the /f /r commands. If after running chkdsk and Crystal Disk Info still says you have errors, there are two ways you can go about this:
1. If you have another computer readily available with an open SATA slot or a SATA to USB cable, you can remove your laptop's drive and plug it into your secondary computer, then run chkdsk on your drive again. This'll work because running chkdsk on a drive that is in-use by the Windows OS prevents it from checking every part of the drive because it is still in use.
2. Replace your drive.
I'd say by the sounds of it, your HDD is failing, but it's better to check than to make assumptions.
Thanks. I backed up my D: drive using the Backup and Restore tool in Windows 10 to my external drive, and am running chkdsk /r /f on boot as we speak. However, in the event it gets stuck (15 minutes since starting it as I write this and it's still at 0%) is there any way to tell if its even making progress?
I have a 9-year-old Dell Inspiron desktop running Vista which is now used for utility. I've taken out my laptop's HDD before and uses Ubuntu to access its contents. Is there any difference though in using an older variant of chkdsk to check a newer drive with newer data? Apologies for the stupid question.
