Are Samsung evo's still the goto SSD's? I hear those crucials aren't bad choices either.
is it safe to run the router with DMZ enabled for my desktop? obvious answer is probably no, but what if there's already a firewall running on the computer? which leads to another question, even though I've allowed an application (specifically Distance) it'll still refuse to accept incoming traffic. firewall logs show nothing on blocked traffic, but if I disable Avast' shields, it'll work properly. how come?
Is there any obvious reason why the video outputs aren't working on my motherboard?
You should be using the video outputs on your graphics card to connect to your monitor, not your motherboard. If you don't have a graphics card connected to your system, though, then it could be faulty outputs. Are there any errors on-screen when you boot up your computer or does it straight-up not work?

I can get a used samsung 840 pro 128gb ssd for $80, but I've never used one before. Is that a good deal/ssd? If I get it does anyone have any good guides for setting up a system with one?
I'm already using 2 outputs from my gpu but don't have a hdmi cable to use a third from it so I want to use one from the motherboard instead.
I could be wrong, so don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure using a multi-monitor setup requires you to connect all of your screens to your graphics card (unless you're doing more than three, if memory serves). You should probably start saving up to buy that HDMI cable.

Also, set your connection type as public instead of home or workplace so the default firewall settings are a bit more strict. As for why Avast blocks it, no clue. Probably looks like malware as far as its concerned. On mine its an option disabled by default.
You need a DisplayPort if you're using one GPU. IIRC
No. DisplayPort is the only system that supports chained displays - having one cable out of the computer, to a monitor, then another cable from that monitor to a second monitor. You can do multiple displays off one GPU by using multiple links from the GPU. I am currently doing VGA to one monitor, HDMI to a second, and DVI to the built-in display. If I had another monitor, I could do a fourth screen over DisplayPort.
Guess I'm gonna have to buy some cords or something because I don't have any way to hook it up. (By the way, this is a laptop) [editline]2nd March 2015[/editline] Would a SATA - USB adapter work? I got the original surface for around 200 iirc and it's served me pretty well.
Why buy some cords? Download the seatools .iso, put it onto a flash drive using a tool called rufus, then you can boot to it using the guide below. You may have to change AHCI to Legacy or IDE in the BIOS. I picked up a cheap Wacom pen from Samsung and use it daily for note-taking. The tablet does have its quirks; the pen tracking is awful 1cm from the edges, but it's something I have gotten used to.
Hey so my friend is running the Windows 10 preview and he has an issue. He's on the Razer Blade with the 760m I think. But when he was trying out WoW, he had to disable the GTX in the device manager because apparently it was causing issues with WoW, so it would then run off the Intel on board graphics card. Now though, everything else is fucked up because he can't fully reenable his GTX. When he clicks Enable in the Device Manager and runs Portal 2 (it worked fine before on Windows 10 preview), it doesn't launch correctly and WoW gets fucked. Any ideas?

Rufus won't accept the iso and when I try a different method with an ima file the usb isn't registered by the BIOS.

Don't be offended, I constantly have to remind my friend's this.

The iso is supposedly for DOS, but that was the one that was linked so I figured some sort of exception worked out.
Hey. Do you guys have an IRC channel you hang out in for misc questions beyond this thread? If not, anyone mind PMing me a Steam Friends link so I can hit them up for general questions? I'll note that I wont be asking 'novice' questions and have rebuilt PC's and the like. Any help is appreciated, I just need someone to talk to about software/hardware, and issues. Thanks.
The CIPWTTKT thread has one in the OP but it's pretty dead most of the time

I'm in the middle of running chkdsk and there's a bunch of unreadable segments, which I'm pretty sure means the harddrive is fucked beyond salvaging.

Why is using PCIE risers frowned upon?
I have a small gaming PC with a mini motherboard and standard size graphics card, however I somehow lost the PCI extender which allowed me to connect the graphics card to the motherboard (They are parallel each other so don't connector normally). Basically do PCI extenders vary? Would this work on my computer?
What's up with Windows 8.1 having invisible barrier between two monitors? Like if I want to shift mouse over to 2nd screen - pointer needs to travel at blazing speeds to break through this barrier. While just slowly dragging it hits the wall on monitor 1. How can I disable this stuff?
hi guys. question about hard drive migration, something i've never really understood (might be a stupid question). i will be building a new PC soon and want to transfer the data from one internal 500GB drive to the new PC. if i just take the drive out and install it into the new PC will i be able to access its info on there? and how would i avoid potentially formatting the drive by accident? it has all my movies/tv shows/music on there. has anyone done this before?
