It's not even a contest speed wise. The SSHD only has a small 8gb drive for caching, nothing like a real SSD.
Welp, that's that, no SSHD for sure now.
SSHDs are gimmicky.
SSD or HDD pick one but not both in the one unit.

or an even better deal for 20 extra

Well you can also use a SSD for the file system and things you want fast and then a HDD on the side for storage :eng101:

Oops, missed that. It kinda depends on whether how much storage you actually use, and if you're saving up for the other later.
Question: Considering a USB OTG device, would it work with any bog standard card reader or would I need a specialised one?
Context: Considering off-site backup when away from computer for extended periods, would like a way to backup my camera's SD card to Dropbox after each shoot. Also, would dropbox for android read from the external storage? I haven't messed with it on mobile so I have no idea.

Well a lot to be honest, I'm a heavy gamer.
But I'm probably just going to consider putting down another $20 for the 250 GB if I can.
On another note, yesterday when I was trying to overclock my CPU I messed a setting up which caused the motherboard to stop POSTing.
I cleared the CMOS by pulling the battery out, and removed the power cord. After waiting 30 seconds I plugged it back in, but didn't hear the occasional zap and simultaneously I heard our cordless phone seek for the main phone. Turns out when I plugged the power cord in, the main breaker cut all power off again. After restoring power, all was fine and dandy, but I'm still worried. About a week ago I plugged in the HDMI cable coming from my PC into my TV, and something as simple as that caused the main breaker to go out as well. This breaker I'm talking about cuts power to all three of our circuits when there's a short circuit somewhere.
What's something like Squarespace but for Australia?
I desperately need 970 performance but i can't stomach spending that much
my question is what is the most painless way to kill myself

I currently use a Corsair TX750M from around 4 years ago however I notice if I'm playing GTA (4K resi) and also watching twitch my graphics drivers seem to crash a lot
Thinking of getting a 850W full modular
(Ill be snipping the image later today to avoid turning the thread into a spec posting thread)
Anyone have any good software suggestions for compressing my blu-ray rips? Currently sitting at 35gb and Handbrake crashes my PC after it's been running for about 10 minutes, no matter how I have it set up.
A bullet to the brain.
But why...?
The 900 series has been out for like 9 months and the 970 still costs what it did
is there a reliable way to get it cheaper or get a good discount or something
I already blew $350 on a 570

Nvidia has no competition on that front. Prices are going to stay high. Not to mention they ARE cheaper. Reference models launched at $330, not non-reference models are down to that price.

What settings are you running HandBrake at? Do you have the error log as to why it crashed?
On a similar topic, my friend and I like to play games together and both of us like to record ourselves, although he's an aspiring Youtube Gamer (in an over saturated market of Youtube Gamers, I know, but regardless) and he likes to upload videos. The problem is, he's using Nvidia Shadowplay and the file sizes are huge, as expected, and he uses HandBrake quite often. The question is, does anyone have good recommendations for how to keep the video looking as good as possible?
He also runs his videos through Sony Vegas 12 before uploading to Youtube, should he run the videos through Sony Vegas and then HandBrake, or vice-versa?
YouTube video should be rendered according to these settings.
For performance, it would be best to encode directly to that in Vegas, using the GPU accelerated version of MainConcept AVC.
For quality, render lossless - or at least very high bitrate AVC - then encode to YouTube settings using x264 (or an x264 frontend like HandBrake).
Since the quality of videos YouTube provides to viewers is shit in general though, the former option would probably be good enough.
I found old PATA DVD drive, I took it apart and found DVD in it.
It says Mac Snow Leopard and has a picture of awesome looking white leopard on it.
Is it any use on PC?
Another question, does anyone have good recommendations for a laptop cooling pad?
My laptop can run most current/new gen games pretty nicely, but the only problem is that it can sometimes crash due to overheating. I've done all I can with the laptop to keep it as cool as possible (such as elevating/angling it and changing fan-related settings), but it's not enough.
I have an Asus G46VW with roughly a 13.7 x 10.3 inch base.
Anyone here think AMD can come back into the performance market with Zen?

We won't know until it comes out.
Why is my broadband disconnected at almost exactly the same time each day?
It's almost always at 2:08am.

Which free anti-virus/anti-malware suite(s) should I use? I'm tired of all the ads avast has now and want to switch to something less intrusive.

If you wanted to make a Snow Leopard hackintosh, it would be fairly useful. Other than that, not much.

Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, CCleaner.
The holy trinity.

Like the above posts have said windows defender is the least intrusive. Combined with Malwarebytes and the proper browser plugins.
On the paid side, ESET NOD32 is the least intrusive and still has excellent detection rates. (It's been a while since I've used nod32 so someone correct me on the detection rates if they have changed)
I've found GFI cloud to be hands down the best antivirus I've ever dealt with, but I think licensing starts at 10 systems.
I'm pretty sure avira's a good choice as an alternative for windows defender as well
malwarebytes is still the king for when shit gets past that though.

Hello OSCE here,
Most of the time Windows Defender will do the job (free and less intrusive). If you have particular needs, you may want a more robust solution like nod32, however you will spend a few bucks.
Automated hacking is less successful these days, people are more educated about security, windows is able to defend itself against most of the stuff.
I've had my HDD for 6 years and have used it regularly. Will it die soon?
