I'm going to upgrade my computer with a new mobo and CPU in the next weeks, I'm also getting windows 10 when it gets out. I got a OEM edition of windows and I'm worried I'll need to have to mess with calling Microsoft to reset the key and what not. How should I tackle this the best way?
Should I change the mobo before windows 10? After?
Last I heard you had to call them and just tell them your motherboard died and the majority of the time they'll just give you the key
And I'm not sure about the whole free windows 10 deal aside from the free upgrade program that puts the icon in your system tray. I've heard that if you use the insider preview and log in with your Microsoft account, your account login is all you need for your Win10 to be legit but don't quote me on that
Newish to PC building. I want a Graphics Card which can play vidoe gaem but isn't half the price of the machine. I want to at least be able to play rust/ark. Here's my setup so far.

My budget is $800, but I'd prefer to keep it less. Also let me know if what I've got so far is shit
Film isn't restricted to a "resolution", as gman explained before. when it's converted to a dvd or a blu-ray, the resulting quality is dependent on how well the film was transferred to a digital format. DVDs are made for standard-def TVs, whereas BluRays handle larger resolutions.
Also they like to digitally "enhance" the films during the ripping process.
Some do it better than others (see Disney's The Sword in the Stone blu-ray release and compare it with a well stored original VHS version).

That cooler isn't going to fit in that case, and the K series processor is useless because you can't overclock on that board. I assume you already have drives and a PSU you're going to be using?

So I have this laptop. The pin in the power jack somehow got bent, so I have to keep the plug angled (by pulling on it) or it won't charge.
The area around the charging port has also started getting extremely hot while charging. I do not know if this is related.
What are the chances of this thing ceasing to charge entirely, or blowing up on me?
So I used an LP4 molex to SATA cable to connect a fan controller to my PC. As soon as I turned my computer on, it turned off. Now it won't start, the cpu fans works but the case fans dont. The motherboard LEDs are on, and resetting CMOS didn't help. How badly did I fuck up?
How's acer build quality? I found this and i thought it was pretty neat but i just started looking for laptops for college

Oh god, the charging port started making noises (unplugged), coinciding with the system slowing down massively
I have an old i5 in a computer I built, which I have since given to my parents for web browsing etc. The heat warning buzzer has been beeping a lot, but I see it's only set to 60 Celsius, the lowest setting - I may have changed the setting myself. I've already cleaned out dust, turned up fans with manual switches, and underclocked the CPU.
Should I be concerned any further than "turn the threshold to 70 celsius"?
I eventually pulled the heatsink off and redid the thermal paste. It doesn't beep anymore.
What case is that?
I have exactly same case except my clips have X's on them instead of flathead shape + I have holes in case for wiring + big fan on the Case grid left of your CPU.
It seems our cases are same nearly with small differences.
Tbh I hate that case, everything is so crammed inside of it, if I was you I would get new case, I am getting new case soon once I sign contract with a job tomorrow.
I had CPU temp problems too, I ended up getting h100i but even then I had to improvise because of crammed case and have fans on top of the case.
And is that M5A97 R2.0?
:snip:
Sorry for the late reply, but the case is a Coolermaster 430 Glite and yes I also have a M5A97 R2.0
At this rate I wouldn't be surprised if it's RAM or hdd related.
re-seat ram + hdd data cable (both ends).
optionally run memtest
I checked the cables, I didn't get a BSoD for 6 days but I just had the same yesterday

you probably shorted your PC
[editline]19th July 2015[/editline]
pull out the battery and bend the pin away from the case, I guess it's a metal case?
you probably shorted your PC
Huh? It still works in general.
pull out the battery and bend the pin away from the case,
I'm not quite sure how I would bend the tip inside an EIAJ socket. Oh, and battery's non-removable - I'd prefer to avoid opening it up.
I guess it's a metal case?
Magnesium, yes. The device in question is a Vaio Duo 13.
Anyone have any experience with the R9 390x yet? I've been considering one in my next build for a while now and honestly the price and specs are appealing, though I don't know how good the drivers and actual real world experiences are with it.

Iffy at best. In the pricerange you can probably snag an HP Elitebook or probook with similar specs, and have a durable PC
I'd appreciate it if a Comp Sci major/careerist could speak to me. I'm trying to decide between a job-thin Biology major (I want to work with animals; they fulfill me) or a Comp Sci major, for the job security and salary.
I'm neither of the above(yet) however if you are not passionate about something you will never succeed at it.

I know. I don't know if I wouldn't be passionate about it, though. I don't really know what it entails, the things I'll have to study and consider, etc. It's why I wanna talk to someone studying it. I'm not opposed to the degree at all. I just need to know the specifics of what it's like.

Going through the degree isn't what you should be thinking about. 99% of IT majors are just bullshit general classes or way too spread out. You need to think about what you want to do for 40+ years after you get a degree. What about/in IT interests you?

I'm kind of going blank when you ask me that. I think it'd be very cool and a valuable skillset if I could manipulate computer systems to my liking, since code is basically interaction with them and they follow it like a set of instructions. I find something like network management would be neat, making sure the computer system of a business runs correctly, or programming for a major game developer or something.
Honestly, I've always been a science person. My dream job would be a zookeeper, I think. However, I still find computers awesome and I'd love to be able to design things like Dwarf Fortress, for example. I've also always been a computers person... always been talented and a logical thinker, intelligent with high ACT scores and whatnot. I'm just a very indecisive person and this decision is killing me with dread. I have one chance here to get a degree that's going to carry me through my life.
Also, Biology jobs are pretty sparse... but I -really- want to work with animals because they help me stay grounded. A Comp Sci degree would get me job security for life, or at least that's what I've been assuming. It's a highly difficult degree with a high payoff. If I could add someone on Steam and pick their brains about their Comp Sci job, I'd appreciate that.
Edit: Upon watching a Harvard lecture and really considering it, I'm gonna give Comp Sci a try.
Update.

I'm watching this Harvard Comp Sci presentation, and intend to follow this course as I learn it before I start my college. I'm getting tingles watching it. Whenever I'd answer something correctly before he said the answer, I'd get so excited! Comp Sci seems like it's amazing and fun and I'm excited to pursue the degree. I definitely feel good about this now.
It just works now.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

have you ever actually fiddled with computers more than "oh it has job security thats nice"
stop looking at the job security, start looking at what you actually know, and what you honestly want to do

I'm getting this, some elements in windows like this are invisible, they become visible once they change (hover over a button or resize the window). Doesn't happen every single time, only sometimes.
It looks like you had some sort of custom window theme installed, did Windows Update break it?
it looks like that's the firefox theme behind it
also it just happens occasionally with windows, that dialog has a habit of pulling an invisible man

They're adding up again, I'm so sick of it.
The BSoD's mostly happen when I'm watching stuff on YouTube or when I'm playing GTA V / War Thunder
What's the best codec pack/movie player for Windows 10?
VLC.
MPC-HC
VLC's advantages are that it is standalone, self-contained, all-in-one, so it won't fuck with anything else period, and will pretty much play anything you throw at it out of the box, and usually with hardware acceleration. That's why I prefer it. Couldn't tell you why anyone would use anything different.
For some reason chrome and 4K youtube videos drops frames like crazy. However it's smooth in firefox and IE. I've even tried it with a fresh install of chrome with no addons and same thing happens. I've also tried disabling HW acceleration and still laggy as hell.
I would switch but I use the chromecast support a lot.
Also having problems with 60fps youtube video dropping like half the frames where as IE drops almost 0.
Reasons?
Because MPC-HC fucks up with livestreamer every time. VLC is the only player that does it hitch free.
With MPC-HC in my instant it will crash yet every format plays fine it just doesn't like livestreamer, whilst VLC does it just fine and every other format.
I've had MPC play shit consistently smoother, found more features, and 21:9 support. I just use VLC for obscure ass file formats.
