• HP Slate cancelled?

SHIT FUCK GOD DAMMIT I wanted one so much :smithicide:
It seems weird that HP would develop the Slate to near 90% completion then bottle out. It's still only rumours right now.
its windows 7 on a tablet device............I'm actually going to vomit
God damn you are such an apple fanboy. Windows based operating system on a tablet would be great. You could even run some older programs and games, like halo 1 or half life on it if you could support a mouse and keyboard.
Wacom. http://www.oqo.com/news/press_releases/pr0002.html
Hmmm.. Not bad, I'll definitely put this on my list of tablets to consider getting then.
I have yet to see a computer smaller than notebook doing well with Windows. All experiences with Windows Mobile and windows on netbooks are mostly bad.
I find it hard to believe HP would totally scrap the Slate. It wouldn't surprise me if they are just optimizing it for webOS instead of Windows 7. I'll admit that a Windows 7 tablet like the Slate would have been awesome, but one thing (the only thing) I like about the iPad is that the OS is designed specifically for such devices. webOS is the same way. The whole card UI pattern is much easier to use on mobile devices compared to windows. I love my Palm Pre and am extremely excited that webOS isn't going to die. I believe that's the main reason there are so few apps compared to the iPhone/iPad. People are afraid to invest time and money in something if they are unsure of its future. HP has deep pockets, so I have no doubt the app store will begin to take off once HP demonstrates that they are committed. It has HUGE development potential, because if you can build a website, you can already build a webOS application. EDIT: Ok, so I was wrong. The Slate uses an Intel Atom CPU, while webOS only supports ARM processors. Looks like they'd have to scrap the Slate hardware altogether.
...but one thing (the only thing) I like about the iPad is that the OS is designed specifically for such devices.
What are you smoking? The iPad OS is is ripped straight from the iPhone. It's a phone operating system on a tablet.
Hopefully that question mark won't turn into a period. Then I'll start ranting.
a phone running windows vista? again...... I am actually going to vomit
AHA! You are misinformed! That's not a phone, It's a field/pocket computer. The thing's awesome though. Has the power of a desktop with the compactness of a phone. And with the dock, it functions as a desktop. (Holy shit, I sound like a freakin' marketer.)
What are you smoking? The iPad is is ripped straight from the iPhone. It's a phone operating system on a tablet.
What I meant by "such devices" was "mobile devices." Phones and tablets are both mobile. Windows 7 is a desktop operating system and thus designed for mouse input and large touch surfaces. The iPhone OS and webOS are designed specifically for touch input on handhelds, which means they will work nicely on both phones and tablets.
I have yet to see a computer smaller than notebook doing well with Windows. All experiences with Windows Mobile and windows on netbooks are mostly bad.
Not really, I have Windows 7(Not starter) running on my HP Mini 311. It's great, runs games fine.
What are you smoking? The iPad OS is is ripped straight from the iPhone. It's a phone operating system on a tablet.
It's designed for low power devices though. Windows isn't. Using Windows with touch input sounds like a horrible idea to me, especially without a decent GPU(ION) to back it up. Some videos stutter on my netbook even with the processor being much better than the Slate, I imagine it would be horribly slow on the even lower power Atom and crappy Intel graphics.
Netbooks are incredibly popular despite having that exact same shit performance and running a desktop OS. Stop arguing a non-issue and confront the issue head on: You hate the future and want it in the butt from old Steve. :P

I'm not saying I like the iPad, I think it's rather stupid, but so is stuffing Windows 7 into a low performance machine. And how do you plan to use anything that's not specifically designed for touch input? Enjoy your emulated mouse and keyboard. Also, why do you think lightweight operating systems like Jolicloud and Chromium OS are popular?
Windows 7 was designed for touch input. It was also created with low power devices like netbooks in mind.
Well, I guess I'll just go with getting an iPad like I planned on last week. A bigger screen is just what I need for watching movies instead of my iPod Touch. Plus, I wanted to get Sketchbook Pro so I can draw.

You'll be playing around with it for like 30 minutes and never open up the giimmicky piece of shit again. Movies are cool though. Just staaay the fuck away from the iPad for drawing, it's as fun as using a tampon dipped in blood as a pen.
Who the fuck watches movies on an iPhone and upgrades to an iPad? Come over here so I can castrate you proper!
Windows 7 was designed for touch input. It was also created with low power devices like netbooks in mind.
No it wasn't. If Windows 7 was truly able to be easily used with any sort of touch input, HP wouldn't have designed that flash interface for stuff
If it wasn't a stylus then your notes wouldn't come put scribbley, anyways, have fun using a querty keyboard for taking trigonemetry notes. Anywys, please don't say that painting with a stylus is easy, sure it's good for retarded doodles, but I want a powerful pen device, I don't think it would be easy to recreate this with a fucking stylus, [img_thumb]http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs49/o/2009/197/2/3/238b515500c7da33c7f38bbc5e8929e5.jpg[/img_thumb] I currently own an i3 and a cintiq, so anything that isn't as powerful seems like a childs toy to me.
You own a Cintiq? Got a picture of your setup?
No it wasn't. If Windows 7 was truly able to be easily used with any sort of touch input, HP wouldn't have designed that flash interface for stuff
Actually it is. That flash crap that HP includes is just oem bloatware.
Actually it is. That flash crap that HP includes is just oem bloatware.
Uh, the UI layout is the same as every other version of Windows. What makes it more suited to touch input?
It's not the same. The Superbar and jump lists for example, those were made with touch in mind. That's why it's so tall, to accommodate sausage fingers. That's why the jump action is an upwards flick. Scrolling is touch integrated, there's even a special behaviour for "end of scroll" just for touch scroll, and it has momentum scrolling too.
What about the people like me who wanted Windows on a tablet device. I could put that to use instantly and constantly. I could have dealt with a little lag here and there, now I'm left in the cold. [editline]03:42AM[/editline] That's why there's a ? in the title.
There's already a bunch of Tablet PCs.
Do I really need to fucking remind you already?!
:gay:
Uh, the UI layout is the same as every other version of Windows. What makes it more suited to touch input?
It adjusts the UI if there's a touch screen attached.
It adjusts the UI if there's a touch screen attached.
Not exactly. It adjusts the UI if you're using a touchscreen. For example, Superbar jumplists will be bigger if you open them with a finger, but not if you do it with a mouse or pen.
Not exactly. It adjusts the UI if you're using a touchscreen. For example, Superbar jumplists will be bigger if you open them with a finger, but not if you do it with a mouse or pen.
How's that not exactly when you just said what I said?
How's that not exactly when you just said what I said?
You said it's changed when a touch screen is attached. I'm saying that the UI is not changed purely by attaching a touchscreen, but by using this touchscreen for input. I.e. when you use a mouse, the UI will be the same, regardless of whether your system has a touchscreen or not.
Do I really need to fucking remind you already?!
And do you see how awful it is? Admittedly that is an old build of Win 7, but "she" was still having to swipe twice to get IE and WMP jumplist, and when she eventually got the WMP jumplist, it selected some video for her. On top of that Win 7 even today from the machines I've seen has the obnoxious OSK button when you click on a textfield, despite having the OSK a swipe away
