Cool, you have a more powerful phone(Barely). Too bad nobody develops games for it, and the overall quality of apps is much lower than on the appstore. Scalable? Who cares? Easily customisable? Jailbreak and install themes with one tap. Open platform? What does this even mean in terms of the average user? Nothing is what. The average user wants a phone that just works, rather than a phone loaded with crapware by the manufacturer/carrier that runs like shit unless you flash a new bootloader and a custom ROM, which are often buggy, especially on my Desire HD. I haven't found a single Android phone with build quality comparable to that of the iPhone 4, they all have major flaws, some are cheap and plasticy, almost all have poor touchscreens which cause you to press the wrong thing in the browser too often to count/
The amount of apple hate bandwagon people on Facepunch is unreal.
It's true. You don't need to install a new boot loader and a new ROM to have a phone that doesn't run like garbage.

I played with a 3GS in an AT&T store when it first came out. it was terrible. it was laggy, the interface is ugly and unintuitive, and is generally just shit. everyone on facebook (at least my friends) who has an iPhone constantly posts about how they hate it, while android users are always raving about how much they love their phones because they just found some cool new app that gives them a new feature (swype being a common example).
Android(Galaxy S/Nexus S ++)
Pros:
- Fast moving (More and more features added often)
- Open and customizeable (Very much like an standard computer, you can change everything to your likings)
- Flash support, so most of the videoes and games you play online can also be played in the browser of your phone. (Many complains that this is a bad feature of the android, but myself think its better to have the option if its bad or not themself? And just turn it off if they dont want it?)
Cons:
- Many dislike the openness and cutomizeabillity of android, and think its too advanced. (My option is that I cannot think why? You dont need to change it if you dont want to?)
- Often phones get "ditched" after some time, means it wont get any updates anymore (But since android is open, you can install a "custom rom" so you still can get all the new updates unofficaly, but this may be hard for an unexperienced user)
- Android phones are often very different to eachother(often called fragmation), in speed(processor, gpu, memory), UI(Different launchers and other). Sometimes this is a bad thing, as devlopers need to try to scale their application for all the different phones. The stock changes is a bit hard to get rid of, if you dont like them, but it is possible by rooting(similar to jailbreaking), or applying a custom rom. The UI can be easily changed by using a different launcher.
iOS(iPhone)
Pros:
- Many apps, and generally more quality in them (But android is actually closing up)
- Good preinstalled design (Its a good and clean preinstalled UI)
Cons:
- If you buy an iPhone, youll get an iPhone, you cannot customize it, means it is just like all the others.
- iPhones also get ditched evenually, but more feature-wise (Like the iPhone 3Gs etc, misses the tethering from iPhone4(iOS4) even if it can support it)
- Their multitasking is a bit bad sometimes, as its not "real" multitasking, applications can only do certain things in the background, like playing music, freeze, etc.
- They are pretty strict at their appmarket. (Some useful and good apps are blocked from the appstore because of this.)
- Flash wont work, means many videoes and most (if not all) online games wont work.
- Often if you got an iPhone you are also forced upon other apple products, like iTunes if you want to transfer files, and a Mac if you want to devlop to it (This is really a cause of taste, someone have nothing against this while others have)
Feel free to add to my list if you feel I forgotten something

Wow, you tried an old iPhone model at a store a while ago. You're such an expert when it comes to iPhones now.

You fail to mention that some of the newest phones still run on prehistoric Android versions, that Android updates are delivered on a year-late-or-never basis, that due to fragmentation, the experience isn't consistent across all devices. Then you go on to say that iPhones get ditched eventually? I consider 3 years pretty damn good, versus Android's 3 months. Then you inflated the cons by adding subjective things like you not liking the advertising. And if you could only think of those two cons, then maybe you shouldn't be making a comparison.

Then show me one new Android Phone which runs on a "prehistoric version"? Okay, maybe one or two new phones is one update behind, where does it say that they arent supposed to get updates? The phone companies are often good at updating their new phones fast, its the old ones they fail at, and thats why its good that android got a good rom community.

Neither do you have to with Android.

Tried the Galaxy S or Desire HD? Both are slow as shit OOTB because of bloatware.
Tried the Galaxy S or Desire HD? Both are slow as shit OOTB because of bloatware.
The Galaxy S is a bit slow because of Samsungs shitty filesystem, nothing to do with android in general. I cant say that the Desire HD is slow though? Dont got it myself though, only tested a friends.
Btw, back to the thread. I recommend that if you are going to buy an android phone, dont go for the Galaxy S, if you dont know to apply a "lagfix" (google it). Go for the new Nexus S, LG 2x or Desire (HD). Eventhough, the Galaxy S is still fast for gaming and more, just as fast as Nexus S, its just slow at opening applications and writing to files, so if you want just this phone, go for it, but you may experience some lag, if you dont apply a lagfix. If you should choose an iPhone or an Androidphone is really your own choice, its hard to compare those phones, as they are very different. I tried to do a comparisation a bit above, but it may be a bit "biased" as SA Spyder said, since I own an android myself, but Ill edit it if anyone disagrees...
Not to mention you'd need a actual Macintosh (or a hackintosh, and suffer from driver issues) to develop apps for Iphones, while Android is platform independent.
Based on that, I know which OS I'd prefer my next phone to run

My Samsung Moment runs great at stock and it has 1.6 on it right now...

Pretty much all Android phones now except for the Nexus S run on an outdated version of Android. Some are JUST getting promised the 2.2 update too, and then some got ditched despite being decently specced, like the X10.
Look, don't get me wrong. I love Android. I myself am most likely going to spend 800 dollars on a Xoom to replace my iPad. But you have to admit that the shortcomings of Android are plenty and that it, like any other OS, is far from perfection.
I had this exact same question a while ago... I had to make the decision. I first chose iPhone 4... and then used the Galaxy S. 1 week later I had traded in for a galaxy s. Best Phone Evar

With 2.2 you mean Froyo right? I know that Desire, Desire HD, Nexus S, LG 2x, Galaxy S and almost all new android phones have it. And 2.3 isnt really relased yet, it has just been out some weeks or something. And I know about the Xperia phones(X10+), I think they are a shame for android with their bad updates and lowered openness(Highly secured bootloader++). It took ages for the x10 to go from 1.6 even when 2.2 was out and all others were updated to it! Now it runs on 2.1, right? Just one update behind the performance big one (JIT etc)... But I guess thats the bad side for fast devlopment, someone is always lagging behind.
But for my side, Im still happy with my HTC Hero, which was almost the first android phone on the market. Running 2.2 with no side effects or lags, unoffically rom though (Its strange, even my Hero got 2.1 long before the x10, and this by unoffical support!). And XDA currently has a working beta of 2.3 which runs on the Hero :D
