I'm pretty sure Xorg disables that by default nowadays, not Ubuntu.
I'm pretty sure Xorg disables that by default nowadays, not Ubuntu.
It could be that too.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/DontZap And this discussion is wildly irrelevant for the thread. How do you expect newbies to get any concept of linux other than 'omg itz teh crazy w/ the terminal everywhere' if you keep going into advanced crap that they certainly don't need to know yet. Not to mention I notice you've all described ways to kill X, but nobody seems to have thought to tell how to start it. For completeness' sake, the simplest way to restart the X server in Karmic and up is
sudo service gdm restart
Edit: Note I didn't make it clear that this of course kills the X server first, meaning it replaces entirely the commands mentioned before. Edit: Note to OP, it is very safe to, and indeed I recommend that you completely ignore the discussion of restarting X.

sudo service gdm restart

This is why I told him to reboot, because I don't want him fooling around in the command line the entire time.
This is why I told him to reboot, because I don't want him fooling around in the command line the entire time.
And I told you it's not windows, since I'd bet $20 that the icons for chromium would have been added automatically and rebooting would be a worthless process.
And I told you it's not windows, since I'd bet $20 that the icons for chromium would have been added automatically and rebooting would be a worthless process.
You're probably right, they probably did show up. But he can't seem to find them for some reason.
Some people are clueless and can't find things sitting under their nose
Jeez muffin, settle down. So OP is it working now or no?
And I told you it's not windows, since I'd bet $20 that the icons for chromium would have been added automatically and rebooting would be a worthless process.
And you'd be right. I tested it using the liveCD while I was writing my post. Icons show up immediately in the applications menu. (The "not windows" comparison isn't really fair since Windows doesn't require a reboot for new icons to show up in the start menu either.)
Jeez muffin, settle down. So OP is it working now or no?
Yes it is. Thanks guys.
