Facepunch Community Build! "Ultimate PC Sanctuary"

You should just post a picture of my desk.
:smug:
I go bored, and went ahead and spec'd out a beast computer to use in this sanctuary of software. I couldn't find a mobo that would work with this, and I didn't calculate the power needed, or find a case to put it in, or a few sundry components like a NIC. This should be a good start for a "money is literally no object" build, at least.
8x Xeon X7560 (OC to 3.0 gHz) - $29,536
4x ATI Radeon HD 6970 (if history holds true, the single-gpu cards are usually clocked slightly faster than the dual-gpu cards) - price unknown, estimate ~$1600
4x Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Elite Pro - $680
4x OCZ Colossus LT 1TB SSDs - $12,600
16x WD Caviar Black 2TB drives (external RAID enclosure) - $3200
32x Kingston 8GB DDR3-1333EC RAM - $8000
6x Samsung 650TS (1080p 65" touchscreen, 120hz) - $48000
Total specs:
48 physical cores (96 with Hyper-Threading)
256GB RAM
4TB internal storage (SSDs)
30TB external storage, RAID 5
12 gigapixel display
4 PCIe x16 slots in use
4 PCI slots in use
Total price: $103,616, plus cost for: case, mobo, PSU, redundant PSU, cooling solution, optical drives, NIC, software

What motherboard do you expect to be running this? Or are you planning on making it a cloud based system.
lol crappy sound system for pair with a built with a 1000 dollar chair
4x Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Elite Pro - $680
hnnnnnnng
If you're going for a good sound card, go for professional shit. You might add a PreSonues preamp too
Also, you can't have a good computer without a good headset and mic
I suggest an AKG K701

You might also need a microphone, and AKG's are awesome too.

Hidden behind your chair, perfect voice in any game.
I decided to clean up the OP a little bit, serious items from now on please. Sure a drink dispenser be nice, but lets keep it in the realm of tech.

Logitech Z-5500 505 Watts 5.1 Digital Speaker System 340USD (I'm sure theres better)

You gotta be kidding.
On a budget it's fine, but you can get a custom kitted surround system that's miles ahead of it.

Razer Goliathus for the mousepad - I have one and it's really nice to use, with plenty of space.
Except when you scratch something on it accidentally, and the upper part comes out.
I had one.
4 of these:
YOu forgot the tactile transducers.
Slap two of these [img_thumb]http://www.metaefficient.com/images/images/buttkicker.jpg[/img_thumb] on the bottom. Plug into left and right subwoofer jacks. Rock out.
Lab Gruppen PLM 20000Q 4 Channel digital power amp to power these:
[img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/286964/Photos/series_index_plm.jpg[/img_thumb]
4 Channels of 4400W @ 4 Ohms
http://labgruppen.com/products/plm_series_touring/
Work better with reactive loads like these thumpers.
Your subwoofers shall be.... EAW Direct radiating Dual 18s? :) SB850z.

Can handle 1400W RMS at 4Ohms each. Put 2 on each of the two remaining channels meaning a total of... 8 x 18" Subs with a total power handling of 5600W RMS

And a shit load of cabling that i cant be arsed to sort out
It comes to around £30,000 ($45,000?)
In essence, possibly one of the nicest quality 7.1 systems ever, and powered up to 300w for 12ohms. Expect LOTS of people to come round and complain, but don't expect to hear them.
What motherboard do you expect to be running this? Or are you planning on making it a cloud based system.
A server mobo, obviously. Kinda has to be, for the octo-socket system.
It actually seems no-ones built 8-processor boards for LGA 1567 yet, just quad boards.
Something like this: http://www.amdex.com/product-1017037996-X8QB6-F-B.html

Of course, that's not going to have enough PCIe slots, but remember, LGA1567 is pretty new. They'll catch up soon.
I wonder what one shall do with that computer power (If that build is ever going to happen, i'll say probably not)? Run Prime95?

I at least would use it for rendering. And gaming, of course, but even Crysis wouldn't stress that hardware too much.
Also, imagine how fast a map would compile on that. No more waiting overnight for VRAD to compile!
Rendering, compiling and virtualization is probably the only use for that type of server hardware.
Rendering, compiling and virtualization is probably the only use for that type of server hardware.
Good thing I do all three.
Besides, if you're going to spend a hundred grand on a computer, it's going to be overkill unless you're building a supercomputer.
Actually, take a couple hundred of these machines, hook them up with infiniband or something, and you might have a pretty decent supercomputer.
Hook up 3 HD Projectors in eyefinaty and maybe a Optimus Maximus keyboard(http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/)
Hook up 3 HD Projectors in eyefinaty and maybe a Optimus Maximus keyboard(http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/)
Why three? How about one massive projector running an impossibly high resolution.
Why three? How about one massive projector running an impossibly high resolution.
Because you can always just buy three of THOSE massive projectors and run them in Eyefinity. Hell, do six.

Odd number for gaming.
Odd number for gaming.
That's how Eyefinity works. You take either 2, 3, or 6 screens, set them up next to each other, and have the drivers treat them as a single behemoth screen.

Looks like a vertical column of comb filtering to me :s
Certainly looks impressive, though!

I thought we were going to do 22.2, not 5.1 surround sound. Besides, you can get a better audio solution than that for a LOT less.
As for the printer I believe a 3D printer should suffice:

Stuff magazine sure has some awesome stuff.
