Well the "THX" certified Logitech Z623 is the same price as the Z-2300 was, but with substantially lower quality components. I also don't understand the lumpy design logitech is using for most of their current speakers.
thx certified doesnt really mean anything
what's a good place to look for receivers? also is it a bad idea to use use one found at a thrift store?
what's a good place to look for receivers? also is it a bad idea to use use one found at a thrift store?
Not at all, thrift stores are often chalk full of equipment gold. I just got these mint Polk Audio Monitor 5's from Goodwill this afternoon for $6 dollars. They sound great. I've already got similar smaller Polk Audio's that you can see in the pictures, they would make good surrounds with the new Monitor 5's as mains. I got a pair of Paradigm Titans for $20. [t]http://puu.sh/37O7s.JPG[/t] [t]http://puu.sh/37Ocw.JPG[/t]

I am going to buy a nicer amp and refoam them, but I am pretty lazy. The people at all my local thrift stores just put ~10-20 dollars on speakers. Occasionally they have something nice. I am hoping to build an entire home theatre system out of thrifted speakers.

Starting next week on mine. I'm building two, one for my audiophile uncle, and one for myself. He's paying for the materials since I'm building him one as well. I've purchased the plans and everything is in order. Even resurfaced my tablesaw over the last few days to start the project off right. It's times like these that I'm glad I'm not married. No one to tell me I cant put a Volkwagen sized black box in the corner of my room.
It can also depend in what country (and town) thrift stores and flea markets you are looking in. I looked for an amp for quite a while and eventually found out it was broken. Though there are more of these stores around the city.

So after sitting on my couch in my bedroom I was staring at my big dayton titanic 15" sub taking up the entire space under my small ikea desk and was lementing the fact that I was going to have to lose the desk in order to place the new TubaHT sub when it's completed, then I realized something, I could actually mount the Subwoofer in the attic above my room, wherever I want placement wise, and build a cutout into the attic, finish it nicely and cover it with mesh and have it the same exact size as the mouth of the TubaHT on it's side. That way I can have a 36" wide horned subwoofer in a small bedroom without sacrificing an inch of real-estate.

Also post a video when things start vibrating around the room. :v:
I want to see this. Also post a video when things start vibrating around the room. :v:
I did a little mockup in photoshop, I looked up how to cut and reinforce joists since the span isn't large enough for the mouth and it's dead easy. (I've always got pretty extensive framing experience) I'd paint the inside mouth of the subwoofer and the 'channel' white and then cover the opening with white speaker fabric.
Do it. I hope your house is sturdy though.

That feeling when you have when you have a party there and you just turn the music up, they would probably look left and right, quit giving a fuck and do the dinosaur.
run the THX Bass test.
Audioengine A2 mass drop. $150.
Audioengine A2 mass drop. $150.
How are those compared to something like the M-Audio AV 40?
How are those compared to something like the M-Audio AV 40?
I have heard that they are a decent amount nicer than the AV 40s, but I am not sure.
Is it possible to force all audio out from my PC (via optical) to the rear speakers in a 5.1 speaker setup? The reason I ask is I have a 5.1 setup with the center L and R speakers about 7 feet to my right setup in my TV cabinet. I have them there to watch TV. I don't use the entire 5.1 as the room won't allow rear speakers to be run. I want to put my rear speakers on my desk so I can use them as my two main PC speakers (seperate from the front C L and R) and use my optical out from my PC to my receiver.
What would you guys recommend as a PC speaker set? Not 5.1 or anything fancy, expensive or huge. I don't have much room so anything that is small with decent (I don't need perfect sound quality, the speaker on my monitor is absolute shit and I hate watching movies and listening to music with headphones on constantly) volume and quality that is as cheap as possible? I like in the UK by the way.
What is your budget?
I don't have a specific budget, but I would like to stay under 50-60 pounds if possible.
I don't have a specific budget, but I would like to stay under 50-60 pounds if possible.
Thats a pretty specific budget :v:
not really? youre not gonna get anything amazing with anything under $60 unless youre this fucking lucky holy shit. something like this or any other cheap logitech 2.1 setup would be better than what you got. still wont sound fantastic but a huge step up.
My vote would be for the best Logitech 2.1 setup you can afford. I've had a ton of Logitech 2.1's, from their cheapest $15 one (that I'm currently using on my main setup) to the Z-2300's and Cinema Z's and I've been pleased with every one of them.
These they're around £50. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=SP-003-ER&tool=3
