Shit, it does kind of sound like that the way I worded it. Sorry!
So I tried a rather unscientific experiment when messing with my equalizer.
http://www.audiocheck.net/testtones_hearingtestaudiogram.php
I went to this page and tried to calibrate it in accordance to the test file as closely as I could with the EQ set to default flat. Then, I took the 10 dBHL test file and listened closely for each range. If I couldn't hear a tone, I turned the EQ up for that specific range until I could just barely hear it. I repeated this for every range and wound up with this.

Is this a smart approach to setting EQ or is it just BS to do for fun?
in theory that is a good approach to EQ. but that EQ is a pile of shit, you probably wont notice any improvements thanks to it. try transfering it to something like foobar and use the auto level feature and see how it sounds.

lol how is it shit?
lol how is it shit?
Like I pointed out before, it (probably) doesn't decrease gain level after EQing so instead it limits the audio so it doesn't peak, but it still limits so it's awful. I only use it to make very small adjustments, especially in bass range.
Bought a used RM-AV3000.

Supports everything in my system and you can add custom devices. Can finally work off a single remote.
Lies.
-Only wants to program a quarter of the available devices. Oddly refuses to do the rest
-Batteries last five months
-No backup battery so if you change the batteries, you lose ALL presets and custom remote profiles
Back to a box of remote controls sitting next to the couch.
Main problems I have with universal remotes:
-If it has buttons, they are hard-coded for features you might never use
-If it has a touch LCD, a lot of functions are hard coded
-Some presets do not support all the functions of your device (can operate a 300 CD jukebox but can't select fucking discs)
-Because of precious hard-coding, you lose some specialty functions when learning from other remote controls
-Grossly overpowered (harmony) for a remote control ( do you really need a color LCD?)
-Not enough slots to program all your devices
-Learned remotes cannot make use of all available buttons/programmable features
-The ability to be customized up the ass but if the battery goes, you have to spend an hour reprogramming it again.
Again, the harmony is nice but over powered and any other remote that CAN do the above is either so massive or so expensive it isn't worth it.
I wish this thread existed a year ago when I was choosing my speakers

You need to bum around second hand stores.
Know this is a bit of a bump but I'm currently in the mood to replace my JVC base HI-FI with another one. I already know of some good speaker brands and how to spot some nicely made speakers as well but is there any way to pick a good HI-FI unit?
Snip
Wrong thread oops
I found a subwoofer under my desk that's been sitting there for about 5 years,(boy am i dumb) I finally decided to plug it in.. it was amazing ;_;
I've never really had/used a sub until now :C
Alright I've been waiting a long time for these micca speakers to come back in stock: http://www.amazon.com/Micca-MB42-Bookshelf-Speakers-Tweeter/dp/B009IUIV4A/ref=sr_1_8?s=aht&srs=2529892011&ie=UTF8&qid=1378518430&sr=1-8&keywords=micca
What should I use for an amp? right now they are going to be hooked to my computer, but I thought I could just wire them into my headphone dac which has L&R phono jacks out both line and preamped. I could run the normal speaker amp ontop of my DAC and have the speakers go into that.
Loads of people go for this http://www.amazon.com/LP-2020A-Lepai-Tripath-Class-T-Amplifier/dp/B0049P6OTI/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_y
but just like with my desktop dac I want something a bit more substantial.
These amps by Pyle look pretty good to me: http://www.amazon.com/Pyle-PCA2-2X40-Watt-Stereo-Amplifier/dp/B001P2VV50/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1378518612&sr=1-12&keywords=desktop+speaker+amp
This would match my headphone dac almost perfectly but it's a bit much: http://www.amazon.com/AudioSource-AMP-25-Watt-Stereo-Black/dp/B004U29IGG/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1378518731&sr=1-4&keywords=desktop+speaker+amp More than the speakers, though I could run 4 speakers on it in the future.

I have the Lepai, and for the price, it is absolutely amazing. I am running it with some old Paradigm Titans, and it drives them no problem. They sound great. Also has two inputs unlike the Pyle. Only problem is the fact that it is really light and I accidentally push it off the back of my desk all the time. Should probably Velcro it down or some shit.
I'm sure it would do fine, but I feel like I want something... bigger to match my D1 more. http://www.mav-audio.com/base/product/tube_magic_d1

I feel like you might want some nicer speakers then.
I don't follow. I just want something that would look nice ontop of it, not something necessarily better. The Lepai seems ricey to me.

Found this HI-FI and speaker set for sale for £10, can anyone tell me if the receiver is vintage and your opinions on whether it's a good deal or not because unlike Vintage audio is still quite alien to me.

Their photos do not do it justice in the slightest. It looks much better irl.

Those things are shit. You get you pay for when you buy a $20 pocket amp.
I was planning on buying this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00828UTE4/ref=gno_cart_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1PPATHVNOJ7UI I've seen reviews of it and it looks really good.
Indeed has a related on on ebay, but I can't really buy off ebay right now and shipping is slow for me here.

That wiring looks really poor.
I hope it's not worse than the wiring of my old, generic AM/FM receiver: [T]https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/904527_188924557924436_1540096038_o.jpg[/T]

This ain't me but they're pretty great for new sub $100 speakers that shake the air pretty hard.

All my stuff comes tomorrow, super excited to set it up.
My family is looking go get rid of our old, big ass speakers in our living room. These things are big and old and just sound like ass now so we need to get some new ones. I was wondering if Audioengine A5+'s would be a good set of speaks for a living room. They're not that big, but the small size is good and if they're quality and can sound loud enough for a space with a high ceiling, I can get them for a dece price right now.
Well shit, one of the speakers has consistent distortion. Usually on the low end. I switched cables and I switched channels on the amp, but still there. And it's most annoying since it's only one, I hear it on one side. Otherwise they sound great and the range is great.
Going to try and let them burn in for 2-3 days and see, if not I'll contact amazon.

The build quality is quite poor. Just barely enough to make it an amp. The heatsink on mine had to be rebuilt because it was held on with a screw and a very flimsy piece of metal.
I bought the Topping TP20 Mark 2. Thing feels built like a tank and the controls feel nice. Same with the connectors on it.

Hearing you talk like this makes me wonder: How is the sound quality on this thing?
Hearing you talk like this makes me wonder: How is the sound quality on this thing?
That on the other hand is fair enough. When the amp blew in my LCD TV I shimmed one into the monitor. It did however need one capacitor replaced because it had bulged right from the factory (like I said, these things have REALLY bad build quality) but it works well enough that there isn't an excessive hiss or buzz.
Well, that's definitely a surprise. This thing is perfect though to increase your repairing skills.
As you certainly wouldn't find it valued enough to be extremely careful.
I've been doing too many vines relating to my speakers, but I did a small one of the amp: https://vine.co/v/hnJEKBQdXVn
The switch is so stiff and nice feeling to turn on. And the relay inside is a nice touch. No popping sound.
