You can also run long as shit cables.
Sounds like I go to the computer shop as soon as I'm done with my internship.

Also, I noticed underneath the connector you read DIGITAL 2 (STB), would this mean the signal will be processed through the STB input selection?
I have the ATH a700x headphones. I'm looking to get some speakers that will deliver the same sort of quality, or better.
I'm not entirely sure what things I need to grab, like speakers, sub, amp etc... Anyone have some suggestions?
I bought a optical SPDIF cable, hooked it up, set it to STB, and I get no sound at all.
What am I doing wrong here?
[editline]30th September 2013[/editline]
Never mind, goofing around with the settings got me set up.
I might have an issue in the future disconnecting the cable from my motherboard though. Looks like I have to wedge it out of there sooner or later.
I own a old Logitech 2300 computer speaker system using a Nuforce DAC. I've recently came into a $350 budget (Amazon gift card) to buy a new turntable and maybe upgrade my speaker system.
Any recommendations? I generally listen to electronic and rock.

This ain't me but they're pretty great for new sub $100 speakers that shake the air pretty hard.

I've heard good things about these:

Could I connect this to my 2300's sub or would I need a splitter of some sort?
I'm selling my beloved Paradigm system to raise money for the Paradigm Studio line. It's going to be sad to see these guys go. Selling all three speakers plus receiver for $499, which is a fair price.

Jesus, is there anything I can do with my speakers (mhc-rv333da) to make them not meh? Or should I just sell them and buy something else (I'm pretty low on $ tho).
I'm just tired of hearing them, they can't handle anything bassy (dnb, dubstep, etc) on more than 40% of volume, and even at acceptable volume the sound is like:
sub bass - meh, doubt it even exists
midbass - THROUGH THE FUCKING ROOF, I disabled every equalizer (AND tried to lower the midbass frequencies) on both the receiver eq and my PC/notebook, it still goes BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBUUUUUUHHHH, it sounds especially weird when there are different bass notes in the song, lower - too quiet, a little higher - BRRRRRRRR
everything else - okay I guess
fuck you sony (or me for not knowing something when choosing)
by the way, they're connected to my sound card (xonar d1, which performs awesomly with my ath-m50 headphones) or my notebook with a shitty onboard (doesn't matter, it's the same)
edit: they're currently playing in the other room, I can hear them perfectly dropping volume when any drums or bass occur
edit2: i think i'll just sell them and buy a 2.1 logitech set, that's as close as I can get to not-meh sound in Russia
While I was travelling in Ecuador I noticed how electronics stores all sold these massive Sony systems. Clearly latin america is a big market for jumped up cheap speakers

I like how there is a "Football" preset.
So I have a nice stereo at home and all, but recently I took an interest in small portable bluetooth speakers. So I started researching. There's all these "popular" brands like the Jawbone Jambox or the Beats Pill. And then there was the JBL Flip. I'd much rather trust a brand name that has been dealing with audio equipment, big or small, for 60+ years than some companies that we've barely heard of before.

At £50 on amazon.co.uk, it was cheaper than aforementioned competitors even though reviews said that the JBL had better sound.
So with big excitement I ordered it. Today it arrived. It was slightly bigger than I had expected, but still very small. It has a pretty good weight to it, it doesn't feel cheap at all.

My first impression of the sound was that it's pretty treble heavy. On some songs it's beneficial, but on others it gets pretty tiring for your ears (The 'Treble reducer' preset in iTunes does a good job at correcting this though). It also depends a lot on where you are and where the speaker is. Put it near a wall and suddenly there's a lot more bass than there is if you just put it on a table in the middle of a room.

Still sounds good though, and it gets really loud for it's size. Turn it up, and you can't talk in the same room without raising your voice. My mom is a Zumba instructor, and after hearing it, she wants one too. (Some places where she teaches, they have the most shitty boombox on the surface of earth and this would be great for her to have)
I'll return when I get it to know better.

Hello; don't know if this is the right spot, but I have a question. I'm trying to find some rear surround sound speakers for my Home Theater setup. I am on a pretty tight budget. I'm in between these three.

I do have two Primus P363s for my two front. Any help would be awesome!
I think you are better off getting speakers of the exact same model as your fronts.
Just recently purchased a pair of MB42's they are wonderful.
Can get blistering loud even on 25watts. Bass is adequate but they feel quality and the design looks pretty subtle and nice.
I've decided to get a pair of Paradigm Studio 20 v4 speakers. There seem to be none available on the internet but one pops up every so often on eBay. Now we play the waiting game where I sit and refresh eBay every few minutes.
I need some help on finding more about a speaker I have.

I've searched around and apparently many fakes were build and sounded horrible. I'm not sure if mine are the real ones but they sound fantastic to me and have a really good build quality. Never had any better speakers.
How can I check if they're the original ones, and if I should, for how much could I sell them?
^^dat frequency response
Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet but there's a Massdrop for the Aune T1 again,
for those who want a budget Tube DAC/SSAmp combo:
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/aune-t1-amp-dac-combo
It's great, in that it has so many outputs. I'm quite tempted to get this over the ODAC/O2AMP just for that reason alone (and it's a tube as well..).
I think that would be better put into the headphone thread, as this thread is about speakers.
I just did some research on bi-amping (passive crossover) speakers. The short conclusion: It's a marketing gimmick.
Unless you are clipping your amplifier, using two amplifiers for one speaker is pointless.
Why?
Because if all works out, you are still sending the exact same full range power-amplified signal to all of the same crossovers & woofers as before. The crossovers then do what they are meant to, reject all of the signals that it is meant to reject. In the case of bi-amping, it is the same signals as before, but now from two amplifiers. But now it introduces more variables in the equation for things to go wrong.
I suppose if you had a system with multiple passive crossovers that led to multiple drivers, then it would be nice to bi-amp if you had one receiver to do so; but with many speakers I've seen, such as standard bookshelf speakers, then one amp would power the main woofer (which would take most of the power) and one for the tweeter. It seems like a waste to have an amplifier that ends up sending the same signal just for the tweeter.
Then there are those people who hook up a tube-amp to the tweeter terminal and a solid-state amp to the other terminal(s). I think that is the most idiotic thing, as that introduces SO many variables for potential bad sound that it makes my head hurt.
As always, Audiophiles think that EVERY change in sound is an 'improvement'.
Interesting to see how much even smaller speakers can add to things. Watching Batman Begins with two OK sized speakers and it sounded very much how it would be in a cinema.
TC-377 lives again. The motor capacitor needed to be replaced.

Do you mean those silly people that put two amplifiers on a speaker, both still amplying a full range signal and then the speaker's built in crossovers high-passing or low-passing that signal? That has always seemed stupid to me. I don't even consider that "Bi-Amping"...
My big PA rig is Tri-Amped but utilises an Active crossover (DBX Driverack) before the amplifiers. As such my sub amp is literally only amplifying sub signals, my mid amp is only doing the mids and my tiny tweeter amp is only working on the highs. With this setup I get full control over the crossover points and the slopes used so I can tune the system to the environment, the subwoofer crossover point may change, sometimes 85hz works better, sometimes 105hz. I also get control of it all in the time domain to make sure I have phase-coherence across all of the speakers. From a protection point of view I can set a limiter for each channel.
In this case, my PA without a doubt sounds better tri-amped than using the built in crossovers. It's not even subtle it just does sound better.
Yes I do mean those silly people who put to amplifiers on a speaker who's crossovers neglect the same signal either way. But at audio stores they will tell you that "running two amplifiers to one passive speaker is the way to go, it really improves sound quality." To which I always ask "Why don't you do it in your store then?" and they always shimmy away from the question. Or say they can't afford to.
That sounds like a nice system you have there. If you are going to use bi-amping or tri-amping, active crossovers are the only way to go; I completely agree with you there. How do you check for phase coherence across the speakers?
Also, even worse than those people who passive bi-amp, are the people who buy a solid-state-tube-amp hybrid amplifiers, which run the signal through tube amps and then has thousands of dollars worth of filter technology that filters out all of the effects of the tube amp. It's those same people who have a several-thousand-dollar lead-pebble filled ultra vibration reducing sand injected speaker stand that "completely removes" all vibration from a speaker. It's just stupid.
If ya'll have not read NwAvGuy's Subjective vs Objective article, I suggest you do:
http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/05/subjective-vs-objective-debate.html
Within there he talks about the sheet test that Matrix HiFi did where they take several thousands of dollars ($12k+) worth of "audiophile audio equipment" and replace it with what audiophiles would consider "shit" ($700... and a wooden chair), and it made NO NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE.

I'm looking at purchasing a hifi system for my bedroom soon (or maybe asking my parents for one for my birthday or xmas - who knows). What exactly should I be looking for in a hifi system.
I went into a store the other day and the two micro hifi systems that one of the guys who worked there recommended to me were the Sony CMTSBT300WB system, and the Panasonic SC-PMX5DBGNS and I tested them both out in store but obviously it's kind of hard to compare between two stereos when you can only ever listen to one of them at a time.
One of my friends has a hifi system with REALLY big speakers which I imagine have an insane power usage - they get VERY loud and can output very powerful bass and they cost him about the same as I'm looking to spend apparently, but I'm not sure how that compares to what I was hearing in store (again, I can't compare multiple things at once, and I certainly can't very well compare what I'm hearing right then to what I'm remembering from weeks or months ago). What kind of specs should I be looking at exactly?
[editline]1st November 2013[/editline]
I would prefer a hifi which has auxiliary in, USB in, has a CD drive and will play radio (analogue AND digital preferable). Would also prefer a system that can get quite loud and produce strong bass, but whatever is realistic...
Looking at spending anywhere between 0 and maybe 500 AUD at most.
At that price I would not recommend either of the ones you posted. You could get a second hand reciever, and CD player and buy a set of bookshelf or floor standing speakers.
Okay, fair enough, but what is an objective way of finding a 'better' receiver or speakers. What do I need to be looking for in terms of specs?
I mean obviously when I'm buying headphones and earphones I like to make sure they have a wide frequency range and a good frequency response across that range, I look for low impedance, etc, but is it easy to find those same specs for hifi equipment (especially second hand stuff)?
[editline]1st November 2013[/editline]
If you personally were to get either of the two I mentioned above which would you choose, and what price would you be willing to pay? Bear in mind this is Australia so you should probably take whatever you're willing to pay in USD and multiply it be anywhere between 1.5 and 2.0 times. There's a chain of stores across here called The Good Guys where you can usually haggle them down by a fair bit if you're convincing enough (they also give discounts for cash purchases too which I would be making).
