Is this the thread where we get to laugh at people buying $500 gold plated liquid nitrogen treated power cables, or is this a more serious discussion? :v:
I have a lot of Sony stuff. Actually, that's all I seem to own unfortunately....
Sony speakers seem to get everywhere for no reason.
I suppose I should post what I'm using now I'm here.
Altec Lansing 2.1 pair for music from my computer, but my main setup is all Aiwa.
I hope not to rile up some kind of tense debate here, but have there ever been any blind trials of people finding expensive amplifiers to sound better than lowly receivers? I'm talking stuff like Mcintosh and Accuphase versus what you'd find at your regular retailer. All I've seen suggests there's no audible difference between them so long as they're level matched and not put under intense strain.

Well, I'd hope it stays on this serious discussion and doesn't dwelve onto the pseudoscience you see so often on audio forums.
oh, I remeasured my room. It's actually 2450 cubic feet, hopefully that makes it less difficult for me finding a subwoofer that can fill out the room.

I was reading some stuff yesterday actually about the super high end market for audio and Bill Fitzmaurice who has been in high end audio for a long time says that above $3,000 on a pair of loudspeakers you are just paying for superficial stuff and are not guaranteed to have any appreciably better audio quality. I don't know about amplifiers though, but I assume the same holds true, that at a point the concept of diminishing returns kicks in and it starts to become a bragging rights game instead of true increases in fidelity.
I need some new woofers for some speakers I bought. I thought that they were fine and that I had gotten a sweet deal, but alas, the foam was bad.
I didn't bother refoaming, soo heh eh heh
There was a nice Onkyo receiver (and a few denon, but they had CD changers in them which is just eh) at good will but no good speakers. Was $20, had optical in and such. Almost convinced my brother to get it, but eh.
[editline]13th January 2013[/editline]
Plus I looked the model up and it was ~$60 online and $20 at the store. Gonna keep looking, though.

Also I love the look of old electronics. Portapro and those speakers you posted in the OP that you own are beautiful.
Optical output indicated digital sound processing, if you want a truly vintage amp for 2.0 sound you need an all analog amp.
Also sony still makes good amp's. The SE series are still made in japan.
(Their non SE series is pretty bad though)
Sound color:
Marantz and Denon, warm.
NAD, Powerfull but neutral.
Yamaha, Very neutral.
Onkyo, Emphasis on low and high.
H&K, Neutral, and bass. (bit meh brand)
Pioneer, Really differs per model.
I love Yamaha gear, my main listening gear are a pair of HS80Ms. I do use them for general A/V work though.
Like most brands, Yamaha does have "cheap" gear that I would say are not representative of their higher end offerings. They do know what they are doing.
I purchased a pair of ricco T2106's off amazon for £26 and free postage, and I was expecting them to be some rip off and I would have to ebay them immediately, but I was suprised when they were the real deal.
They sound amazing for a cheap 2.0 desktop system (I got sick of the overpowering logitech sub in the Z-4's)
So yeah! Only one problem the top tiny speaker (tweeter?) has had the cone pushed in, any way to pull it out easy without damaging it?

Depending on the material I've used a vacuum cleaner before, you need to be careful though. You could use your mouth for a slightly less aggressive method.
Other methods I've seen are Blu-tack and tape but I've never done that myself.
I used duct tape and it worked fine, they aren't the most expensive high end speakers so it was just a plastic cone
Also obviously they don't have shit on a real sound system with an amp but for something that plugs right into a 3.5mil jack and was £26 I'd reccomend them to anybody looking for cheap 2.0 speakers that look classy
Probably the most valuable audio thing I have is this

It has a pretty strong and bassy sound, especially compared to these two

Top one being a cheap and pretty shitty amp that I keep just to have an amp I don't give a shit about if it breaks. The bottom one is pretty good although not very powerful at 2x40W@8Ohm
And then I also have this mixer which is pretty basic but still cool

my dad has a whole shit ton of old NAD equiptment in the basement, I should really look online to see how good they are. He also uses an Onkyo reciever in the living room with two bose floorstanding mains (really just small speakers on a stick, but man they are loud), some in wall speakers for the rear left and right channels, and a cambridge center channel. I think he actually has two fischer subwoofers in the room, but only one is used. :v:
why do dads always have nice audio stuff?
Having an audio system used to be more of big thing back in the day. Music wasn't as portable back then, so that probably had a large part to do with it. It's nice that your dad had some NAD gear, it can fetch a decent price if you decided to sell it. Personally I "inhereited" a 90s era receiver and a pair of Bose 301s from my Dad, but I can't complain the receiver works just fine with my speakers and I can sell the Bose for some decent cash.
I have a 90s era Technics receiver, and all it does is overheat.

Baby steps, just through together a "scale" mockup with scrap in my studio, it's going to be a fun project!
I want a studio :(

Mine is a sa-gx330, the fan keeps turning on and off when there's a decent amount of bass going. It does this in-sync with the beats. It's not really audible but still noticable if you actually listen for it. Hopefully when I get a subwoofer the receiver won't be burdened by having to send power for those low bass frequencies.

That is exactly what I have. Do you have the remote for yours?
no, did it came with a remote? Be nice if it did.
oh, it apparently does come with a remote. Looks like the replacements for them are 40 dollars.

I didn't have the remote for mine up until a couple of months ago, when I found it in my basement still in the original packaging. It is pretty useful. The volume knob moves when you adjust it on the remote, and I find that really cool.

I feel like my parents used to have one of these, it looks so damn familiar.

everything from the early 90s and 80s looks like that
Did a little digging around and found it

I'm sure if you were to look hard enough you could find a toaster that looks like that
damn it, I spotted a SB-12+ on audiogon today for 400 dollars. I would have bought the thing, but someone bought it just an hour after I saw the posting! It was my ideal sub, sealed, 12", and a couple hundred dollars off retail.

I know the feeling, I was watching a movie today with a friend and went downstairs to grab a drink and realized my entire china cabinet was singing with all the glassware vibrating and ringing.
It's nice to live alone.
Any subs out there comparable to this? Same price or for less, I'd like to find one on the used market.
http://www.svsound.com/subwoofers/sealed-box/sb12-nsd#.UPcUVqFFsVk
12" Sealed, good with music.
What's the difference between sealed and ported? I know most speakers are ported and that the port needs to be a certain length so the speaker is tuned, but what's the pros and cons?
A sealed design is generally more articulate, things will sound cleaner and more accurate but at the expense of output.
