Refoaming right now. Pictures once it's finished. Done, now I just need to wait for the glue to cure for a while. I think I did a very clean job, especially for a first time. Looking up videos on line some people are so sloppy with the glue application that it just looks awful. So I just made a goodwill run to look for speakers, specifically some speakers for a friend of mine wanting to get a nice sounding vintage set since he's got nothing as is, well as I was walking into goodwill, a guy in a dirty flannel and dirty white shoes was walking out, pushing a cart with two mint looking Cerwin Vega DX-5's...he got into a piece of shit mini van, I doubt he knew what he bought. They are not anything super special but they look cool, were in great shape and would have made a great set of speakers for my friend. old cerwin vega least looks nicer than what they have now, the present designs look like rice to me.
old cerwin vega least looks nicer than what they have now, the present designs look like rice to me.
Surprisingly the one I posted was actually a late 90's production. Still has that 'classic' look. Would have been good starter speakers for my friend. On another note, I get to fire up my newly refoamed EPI's in a little while. Really looking forward to it. [editline]18th January 2013[/editline] Just tested the EPI's, I am more than impressed, they sounded beautiful. The soundstage was very convincing and the clarity of the midrange and high end was right up there with my EPI A500's, I am very impressed. The low end is lacking, but that's expected in a 2 way bookshelf. I'm going to have a hard time convincing myself to rip the components out to make the center channel like I was planning. Also these speakers are damn efficient, very good output.
I have some Cerwin Vega LS-12's in my home theater along with a 8" Klipsch SW-450 and some other surround sound speakers

I'm having doubts, would getting a nice subwoofer be foolish in my position? I only listen to music and my speakers go down to 39hz. The Sierra 1s are supposedly very articulate with bass, so I feel like I won't benefit much from getting a cheap subwoofer as they would probably not be able to keep up with the stand-mounts and muddy the sound. I've been eyeing the sb-12s as I previously mentioned earlier before, they'll definitely keep up with my speakers and give me more extension and output but for 680 dollars I don't know if it'll be quite worth it if I only listen to music.
If I were you I would buy a nicer higher power receiver first, something that can push enough power to those Sierra 1's. I would go with something that has at least 110w per channel. I've had my EPI A500's hooked up to a 80w Denon receiver and recently got a higher end 115w per channel 7.1 Denon and the quality and output of the sound from the same speakers has dramatically improved. Overall though I would say you definately need a subwoofer. My A500's have a 10" Woofer and dual 12" Passive radiators and it has very nice bass response but when I hooked up my 1000w 15" Reference series Dayton subwoofer it literally made the low extention of the A500's seem pitfiul while still remaining precise and articulate all the way down to 18hz.
The receiver I'm using at the moment is 100 watts and goes plenty loud with the speakers. I think I'll go for the sub then to get what I'm missing.

What are you using for home theater purposes?

I occasionally watch some things from my laptop as well, though I use that as a music source as well.

Here is another speaker showcase of mine. It's now my current speaker project now that I've fixed my EPI T/E 100's. OHM N Subwoofer Production Date: 1978 Original Price: $425 ($1445 in 2012 Dollars) Amplifier Recommended: 30-100 watts Frequency Response: 37-150hz Sensitivity: 89 dB Dual 8" Drivers, Dual 12" Passive radiators, It's extremely heavy for its size at 65 pounds, built extremely well and very solid. It has a thick walnut veneer that will refinish nicely and a very complex two channel crossover on the underside. I plan on getting new foam for the surrounds, refinishing the walnut, constructing a new "cross over box" which is the black "pedestal" that the speaker sits on, it was made out of particle board so it has been chipped and knocked around over the years. I also plan on repainting the black portions of the cabniet and putting new black speaker fabric on as well. Also, I picked this up at goodwill for $3.99, it will make a very nice match for my EPI T/E 100's. I just took the drivers out and weighed them, the two 8" drivers weigh 18 pounds. That's over twice the standard weight of a pair of 8's, the magnets on these speakers are insane, I bet the articulation and clarity is outstanding once they get repaired. Hey guys looking for an active sub for my home theatre set up, I don't want anything too intense just a little sub around £50 - £100 (if that's reasonable) and something to make cable management a little easier. I'm running a Yamaha RX-v373. Here's some uninteresting pictures. The reciever: [thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/101889627/reciever%202.jpg[/thumb] The cables that I need to sort out. [thumb]https://dl.dropbox.com/u/101889627/bad%20cables.jpg[/thumb] The speakers I have are terrible at the moment, you don't want to see them haha.
What kind of subwoofer are you using at the moment? [editline]19th January 2013[/editline] For a budget home theater active subwoofer I would definitely go with the Polk Audio PSW505, it's a 12" with a 300watt plate amp, people rant and rave about its performance for the price. You don't see to many people with negative things to say about it, obviously you can go bigger and more powerful but it's a fantastic intro subwoofer. You can get it for $190 on average and I've seen it go quite a bit cheaper as well. Great value for your money
Is it possible to connect an SVS subwoofer to an old receiver like the one I have? My technics sa gx330 does not have a sub out and the SVS doesn't appear to have speaker level? SVS backplate receiver
I want to get a hold of a 5.1 sound kit to plug my PS3 into (using optical) Anyone had any experiences with the sony DAV-S550? I can get one for £30 used. If not, can anyone point me to a good home theater kit? It has to be small, half decent, has optical in, is cheap (budget's around £50) don't care about whether it's used or it's fugly.

£50 [editline]20th January 2013[/editline] Hell, i wouldn't mind if the DVD/blu ray part is stuffed, the PS3 can play them. [editline]20th January 2013[/editline] The auction for the DAV-S550 ends in 50 minutes. [editline]20th January 2013[/editline] Should i go for it?

Sony is not really famous for making speakers.

Auction ended anyway. Other options would be a cheap Logitech set.
Can a center channel out be used as a substitute for sub out if the receiver is one of those old "fake surround" stereo receivers? The center channel in my technics is full-range L R mono mix.
That is exactly what I have. Do you have the remote for yours?
As it turns out, mine is the 505 instead of the 303. I just have a few more buttons and dials than you.

Ooh I've searched for a thread like that here on Facepunch. Quite impressive audio equipment you guys have there. I've always wondered if current micro hifi systems under 100€/130$ have decent quality, especially with bass. Mostly I care if low bass is even audible and clear enough. Does anyone have any experience with these? I also have some flea markets nearby so next time I visit them I'll keep a better eye out for vintage systems from now on. (I've seen a couple of 'em) I use broken Philips hi-fi bookshelf speakers cause I'm poor. They seem to be uncommon but they have a fine quality: [sp]Not my pic.[/sp]The amplifier is a joke. I also own Sennheiser HD280 studio headphones that cost 120€, great quality but bass is a bit too low. (OP, you should maybe add 'bass reflex' in speaker terms. Just a suggestion. )
most likely not, you usually need floorstanders or a subwoofer for low bass.
Ajacks can you please take a picture of you impersonating the Memorex chairman? Please.
most likely not, you usually need floorstanders or a subwoofer for low bass.
Well these particular speakers that I currently use can play bass just fine, with bass boost of course. I can barely hear it from 40hz and it's starts normally at 45hz. How about slightly bigger and expensive bookshelves that have like 4-6 inch cone, they might kinda look the same as my current ones or just have the same size. Would they be able to play low bass?
