It will only draw what it needs
Do you not understand what I said?
Do you not understand what I said?
Do you understand how electricity works? A 750W PSU is only expensive upfront. If he bought a 1000W PSU his energy costs would be the same because the PC would draw the same amount of power.
I don't think Protocol knows how PSU's work.
As I've been mentioning, it depends on what his goals are. If it's purely performance, he should go with another 6850. This is complicated because the 6850 is in such an odd price bracket.
And that's where basic inference comes in. He mentioned he wanted to buy a 670 but couldn't afford it at the time. Now, unless I'm a freak of nature, I wouldn't be buying a 670 because it runs a little cooler or uses less power than my current card, it's because it has a massive gain in performance.
Does anyone know where I can get that greasemonkey script that completely hides blocked users posts?

Alot of power supplies are less then 80% if you use like 50% of its capability. Simple terms for you.. BRT what am I doing wrong I thought this was widely known..?
Heres my PSU if anyone's wondering http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817553005
I still think of myself as extremely fortunate at times because I got a free 1100W (!!) PSU from my dad :v: WHY DO I KEEP GETTING PAGEKINGS :(
I don't think Protocol knows how PSU's work.
They don't work at full load constantly, that's my point.

BRT what am I doing wrong I thought this was widely known.?
Okay well if you get a Bronze PSU that means you're drawing what, 20% extra watts? But if you get a bronze 500W and a bronze 1000W and the computer only needs 300 watts to operate, you will still only be drawing 360 watts from the wall. The wattage of the PSU only comes into play if you are using a very power hungry system (quad SLI for example)
They don't work at full load constantly, that's my point.
So why go overkill with a 750W and use more electricity then you would with a 550W which is cheaper and would run 6850's fine with good efficiently
What the fuck happened, because this thread is going really fucking fast right now. Pro discussion about PSU-s and GPU-s I see.
So why go overkill with a 750W and use more electricity then you would with a 550W which is cheaper and would run 6850's fine with good efficiently
This discussion isn't even relevant anymore, he's already posted his PSU and it's a 700w with 80+ Silver.
So why go overkill with a 750W and use more electricity then you would with a 550W which is cheaper and would run 6850's fine with good efficiently
It won't be using up more electricity though :|
So why go overkill with a 750W and use more electricity then you would with a 550W which is cheaper and would run 6850's fine with good efficiently
The difference between what a 550W and 750W draws would be negligible and the overhead provided by the 750W may be desirable for longevity.
http://www.anandtech.com/show/2624/3 Each power supply has a efficiency curve showing the percentage of input wattage that gets converted to output wattage. Generally, the lower the usage, the lower the efficiency. If a PSU is running at 500watts output, and 90% efficiency. 55watts are being dumped into the air as heat. Running a low end system on a high end power supply will end up pumping a higher percentage of waste heat into your room, it's better to get a lower wattage unit since it will run in its optimal range. In reality it's not that big of a deal if when buying a new quality unit since most are efficient across the spectrum. And it's not bad for the unit, it's just not as efficient. When I'm under load, I believe I'm at 93% efficiency, which means something like 45watts is being pumped out the back of my case as PSU waste heat.

B) Crossfire 6850s draw about 400W on stock, conservatively, I don't know about you but that leaves less headroom than I'd like.
What the fuck happened, because this thread is going really fucking fast right now. Pro discussion about PSU-s and GPU-s I see.
Some circlejerk is attacking me for saying PSU's have a efficiency curve that drops when system is only using 50% load. Now they're trying to use what he said after I had posted against me, when we all never knew what PSU he had at the time of posting.
It won't be using up more electricity though :|
It will, depending on where the optimal efficiency is. Not much, but for the sake of sounding right, it will.

http://www.cougar-world.com/index.php?id=13 At %50 load, the PSU seems to be pretty damn efficient. Which is odd, but good for this case.
People with differing opinions and aggressive (and some passive) argumentative styles isn't a circlejerk.
Dunno, even if I post the correct information and someone else disagrees with me by a marginal level wingless and the same other dudes will just dumb spam. Kind of feels like it, I don't understand how some people can get so enraged in a argument about power supplies and GPU's.

I would personally prefer the overhead of the 750W. Others like Brt may want the lower waste heat.
The price difference between the two is negligible. I would personally prefer the overhead of the 750W. Others like Brt may want the lower waste heat.
I have a 1KW unit, but it's rated for like 95% efficiency for most of the curve, and I go up to maybe 65-70% usage. So i'm wasting plenty of heat, just trying to sound correct and smug.
