What's wrong with those controllers?
Generally unreliable, probably mostly fixed now. The M4 and the 830 are still better choices in terms of reliability.
Basically, if it uses a SandForce controller, stay away.
Weird, I'd always heard those were the good ones.
Oh well. Grabbing a 128GB Crucial M4. Also grabbing a 1TB Barracuda for this Mac - I figure I should start actually backing my shit up, you know? Plus, it's like $90.

Not really. All that's really missing is a comma ("The irony, had it been based on Ubuntu...").
Basically, if it uses a SandForce controller, stay away.
The Crucial M4 is a good one, seems to be on offer a lit now too.
I have a Samsung 830, a really good SSD as both the memory and controller are Samsung designed/made. A little more expensive than the M4, but is certainly the king of SSD reliability.
CentOS, TinyCore, Slackware, Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, Mageia.
Need more?
Intel is using Sandforce for the 530 and 330 SSD's now. Sandforce is fine now.

I feel scared now.
I decided to go to the "website" for it.
It was a topic on Stormfront. Totally gonna get FBI tracked now.

RHEL, Gentoo and CentOS are pretty high on my list I think.
If I like CentOS enough I might even stuff it on my server.
Intel's strenuous validation will eventually make SandForce's drives better for everyone, but for now the Cherryville firmware remains exclusive. Intel wouldn't go on record with details of its arrangement with SandForce, but from what I've managed to piece together the Intel Cherryville firmware is exclusive for a limited period of time. That exclusivity agreement likely expires sometime after the SF-2281 is replaced by a 3rd generation controller. There are some loopholes that allow SandForce to port bug fixes to general partner firmware but the specific terms aren't public information. The important takeaway is anything fixed in Intel's firmware isn't necessarily going to be fixed in other SF-2281 based drives in the near term. This is an important distinction because although Cherryville performs very similarly to other SF-2281 drives, it should be more reliable.
Fine for the Intel drives, not so much for the others.

Weird.
My bosses, as you may recall, are all Apple guys. They're not Macfags - they're reasonable people - but every company computer is Apple. Macbooks. Mac Minis. An old Xserve. iPhones and iPads.
While waiting on my fucking laptop, I'm using a Mac Mini. Not particularly bad - considering all that needs to run is Komodo and ssh, it's more than powerful enough. Only reason I even mention it is that it means I use a Magic Mouse (aka the touch mouse with no buttons).
It's actually not bad - I actually like it for coding, although it would be terrible for gaming and such. The "swipe through desktops" is particularly useful. But that fucker chews through batteries like nothing. Two AA batteries will last about two weeks - I had to replace them today because the thing completely died over my lunch break.
Interestingly, the red "low battery" light just came on at my home computer. Logitech M315. It's good, it's small, and it was literally the cheapest mouse I could find.
The single AA battery in it, though, lasts about 4-6 months, depending on how often I remember to turn it off (aka never).
Just an interesting thing.
I have the same mouse, works wonders

I meant they're awesome at any age.
some of you (read: Deeps) may have seen this on Facebook already but I'm posting it here anyway, with more explanation!
My state requires that every high school student do a "Culminating Exhibition" at the end of senior year. My city's school district says that's a "Reflective Letter" about yourself, a project, and a presentation on that project.
My choice of project was to run a video game tournament. I had it all planned out - I'd host it at the local gamer restaurant, I'd find a place to do registration, prize was a cut of the purse, it'd be a Halo: Reach tournament, basically the plan made sense. I'd even begun looking up places to actually go get extra copies.
And then the family ran out of money. We lost two sources of income, so it's me, my mother, my stepfather, my sister, her boyfriend, their 5 year old, and the boyfriend's 13-year-old, and the only people bringing in money are my mother and my sister. We can barely afford my bus fare home from school, and I ride in with my mother most mornings and have to take a fifteen or twenty minute walk to the school from the hospital (where she works) to get there.
Anyway. So instead of the ~45 hours I'm supposed to have on this project, I've only got about 10. And since my CE teacher's cool she's letting me design the flyer I would have designed and sent out anyway and letting me count it even though I'm past deadline on this. Since I'm going to put some actual damned effort into this flyer (I don't like shitting things out in Photoshop unless it doesn't look like I shit it out), that's going to be a total of like 5 hours possibly. So 15.
And then it hit me. I was playing TF2 for about three hours. That's a video game. A multiplayer video game. With tournament capabilities. FUCKING BINGO. I'll play through a bunch of different FPS games for a while and call that "planning for backup in case Halo: Reach fails". My presentation panel is probably going to be a bunch of computer illiterates who don't even know the XBox is the thing that plays the video games, researching a bunch of PC games won't be a big deal.
