Funny, the SSD in my netbook died today. Well, it kind of works, I can read my stuff if I connect it to another computer, but when you load a lot of stuff at once it locks up.
Are SSD's safe to buy in terms of longevity
Are SSD's safe to buy in terms of longevity
They stop working way faster than normal hdds.
They stop working way faster than normal hdds.
They still last for ages, though.
They still last for ages, though.
Well, I've have a 1Tb Hitachi Deathstar that's been running for 3 years now, so I think I have good luck when it comes to hard drives.
Well, I've have a 1Tb Hitachi Deathstar that's been running for 3 years now, so I think I have good luck when it comes to hard drives.
The newer deathstar drives aren't anywhere near as bad as the really old deathstars afaik, which would be why it's still running.
Pepper;36122669']Windows XP
XP is SSD torture :c
Seems like the iPhone leaked. Also, WP7 apparently corrects to the correct spelling of "iPhone". Cool.
Seems like the iPhone leaked. Also, WP7 apparently corrects to the correct spelling of "iPhone". Cool.
I somehow doubt the legitimacy of the leak the iPhone rumor mill gets worked up every time photos like that show up near a conference
Yeah, but the same happened with the iPad 2 and such, it isn't too far fetched. I'm not convinced, and I didn't put my bets on WWDC, but time will tell.
I'm sure it will have the larger screen but the two-tone brushed aluminum and weird ass speaker grills are not Apple's style. Looks like a really cheap chiPhone
Variables? Or am I thinking too obvious?

someFunction(<<<'THISBITCH' This thing. I can put whatever the flying ass I want as long as I put a unique string in as the name. And I terminate it by putting said name in a line by itself, like so. THISBITCH );
Where the hell is the dock connector?
Is that the leak? Where the hell is the dock connector?
That is supposedly the new dock connector. I think it's a load of shit. Apple's not about to roll out a new dock connector. They just released the new iPad with the old one.
Second, one is both common sense and knowledge. There are, no estimate, over 200 billion lines of code (btw that's about 80% of all the worlds code right now) active right now. It's a business language, it's used on basically every mainframe ever past the 1960's. Proper estimates of current LOC is about 222 billion with about 2 to 4 billion being added every year. I don't think 2 coders could do that. It's a legacy enterprise language, no one's moving to it, it's all legacy customers. It's 50 damn years old, it's had the time to get the size. There's no questioning it. You're very rarely going to see it outside a mainframe system.
First, [citation needed], on all those numbers. Seriously - if you're going to claim 80% of all code on the planet is [anything], you need to back that up. Second, judging programs (and languages) by lines of code is like judging aircraft by weight, to paraphrase a famous quote. I've heard that COBOL programs actually tend to be larger than the assembly they compile to - how many of those supposed 2x10^11 LOC consist of PROCEDURE DIVISION or WORKING-STORAGE SECTION?
Doesn't apple need to comply with the new micro-USB charging standard?
Apparently they're selling some kind of adapter to get around that.
I've heard that COBOL programs actually tend to be larger than the assembly they compile to
This is true for nearly every single language. Except for minimal languages that have one-byte operations that turn into multiple instructions like Brainfuck or something. [editline]30th May 2012[/editline] Also, COBOL seems really sparse in terms of amount of code relative to functionality for some reason. [editline]30th May 2012[/editline] Oh my god what
This is true for nearly every single language. Except for minimal languages that have one-byte operations that turn into multiple instructions like Brainfuck or something.
Assembly source, not assembly binary. Eg:
IDENTIFICATION DIVISION. PROGRAM-ID. BASIC-MATH. DATA DIVISION. WORKING-STORAGE SECTION. SUM PIC 99 VALUE ZEROS PROCEDURE DIVISION. ADD 2 TO 2 GIVING SUM IF SUM IS 4 DISPLAY 'COBOL can correctly perform basic arithmetic'. ELSE DISPLAY 'COBOL fails as math'. END-IF STOP RUN.
equates to:
.section .rodata correctmessage: .ascii "Assembly can perform basic math.\n\0" correctlength: .quad . -correctmessage wrongmessage: .ascii "Assembly fails.\n\0" wronglength: .quad . -wrongstring .section .text .globl _start _start: movq $2, %rdx movq $2, %rcx add %rcx %rdx cmp %rdx $4 jne badresult goodresult: movq $correctmessage, %rcx movq $correctlength, %rdx jmp output badresult: movq $wrongmessage, %rcx movq $wronglength, %rdx output: movq $4, %rax movq $1, %rbx int $0x80 movq %rax, %rbx movq $1, %rax int $0x80
which is also equivalent to
#include <stdio.h> int main(){ if (2 + 2 == 4) printf("C can do basic math"); else printf("C fails"); return 0; }
By the way, I literally just typed those into Firefox, no testing. So there's a non-trivial chance that I completely fucked one of them up, especially since I hate 2/3 of them. I'll end with a quote from the Hacker Dictionary, Fourth edition:
COBOL /koh'bol/ /n./ [COmmon Business-Oriented Language] (Synonymous with evil.) A weak, verbose, and flabby language used by card wallopers to do boring mindless things on dinosaur mainframes. Hackers believe that all COBOL programmers are suits or code grinders, and no self-respecting hacker will ever admit to having learned the language. Its very name is seldom uttered without ritual expressions of disgust or horror. One popular one is Edsger W. Dijkstra's famous observation that "The use of COBOL cripples the mind; its teaching should, therefore, be regarded as a criminal offense." (from "Selected Writings on Computing: A Personal Perspective") See also fear and loathing, software rot.
