I'm thinking about cancelling my VPS with SecuredSpeed and replacing it with something from BuyVM or something else. The reliability isn't great, so I think they're overselling...
SecuredSpeed was terrible. They dropped me for no reason and said I was "hacking" them.
SecuredSpeed was terrible. They dropped me for no reason and said I was "hacking" them.
That's great. I was expecting a bill a while ago, since I bought 6 months of service in January, though I haven't gotten anything... I better back up everything.

Fuck this shit I hate the newer windows live messenger, I purposefully install older versions on new computers pre-GUI rape But now it seems I can't, to sign in it forces you to update Does anyone know of a good alternative that allows avatars and BBC code/HTML to be inserted into the message? (Like Messenger Plus! Allows you to do) Because I won't even use the new WLM even if I was paid money to use it
Pidgin
Pidgin
I like it so far but I can't seem to find a plugin that allows what I said in the bolded text above. I can change font color and style, but that's no different from what I could do without Messenger Plus! before. This is what I mean: I could italic certain words in my message with either HTML or BBC code with Messenger Plus! and have the sent message show the italic word as such like in a forum post (along with other BBC/HTML like color), however, with Pidgin, I cannot seem to do it.

Reposting a letter I just posted on G+, so people actually see it:
Dear ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, I am, to put it mildly, enraged with your entire company. I was, until recently, quite a fan of Asus. No longer. You have demonstrated none of the competence or quality I have come to expect. Indeed, you have demonstrated nothing but gross negligence, the kind of quality and service I would expect from some cheaply-made nameless manufacturer, not "one of the leaders in the industry". You see, my last laptop was an Asus. An M50vm, to be precise. Good price, good quality, lasted as long as it could (I'm a bit rougher on hardware than most), and the one time I had issues with it, they were quickly and pleasantly resolved. I'd recommended Asus to many of my friends as well, I was so pleased. So, naturally, when it finally died, I sought to replace it with a new Asus laptop. I quickly decided on upgrading to the G54 series. Except that, at the time I looked, they were all sold out save one heavily overpriced 3D display one. From what I could tell, they were being discontinued in favor of the imminent G55 series. I was willing to wait an extra week or two, especially since it meant I would get a slightly better product. Well, it seems you must have miscalculated, or ran into manufacturing delays, or something, because it seemed as though you went a full month between "discontinuing old product" and "launching new replacement". Probably bad for business, but hey, everyone makes mistakes, right? I was getting quite impatient by this time, so I ordered from the first retailer that listed it - HIDEvolution.com. They're probably the cause of much of my further problems - if I were you, I would stop doing business with them, because they're costing you repeat customers. I know I will never trust them with so much as a USB cable again. Well, even though I ordered pretty much immediately, I was notified that they were already on back-order. Said notice came several days after ordering, mind you, when other sites began to list the product. Then they claimed repeated issues getting new hardware. Finally, after three weeks, I got an email from them saying my laptop had finally arrived. Scant minutes later, I received another - my laptop was impossible. I'd ordered an SSD be added to the second hard drive bay (which HIDEvolution showed as existing, and which was backed up by the earlier models having that feature. However, according to them, a G55 does not have a second hard drive bay - note that it took them three weeks to figure this out. In the meantime, the laptop had become available at pretty much every major retailer. Fine. Mistakes happen. I had them switch it for the larger G75. I also had them drop the SSD, and purchased one myself elsewhere that had twice as much capacity for $25 less - I can install it myself. Well, I finally got it, after an agonizing week of constantly refreshing the Fedex tracking page (just a note: do you really need to ship it across the country by ground?). It was good. Large, crisp screen, good appearance, comfortable keyboard. A bit bulky, but given the powerful hardware inside, that's pretty much a given. I was stoked to get all my games installed, see just how powerful the beast was. Sadly, I never got that chance. Because three hours later, the thing had completely died. Would not boot - wouldn't even hit BIOS. Fans didn't spin up, hard drive didn't spin up, nothing. Pressing the power button got naught but a flicker of the lights. I did all the standard diagnostics myself, at the very least it was a total failure of some critical component, almost certainly the motherboard. I sent of an email to your tech support immediately, including all relevant details. You promised a reply within 48 hours, after which I would automatically be raised to "urgent priority". Well, after five days with no response, I called. Your first technician was rude and unhelpful, insisting I needed to call the retailer instead. HIDEvolution, naturally, insisted I needed to call you. After much wasted time and breath, and perhaps a few shouted profanities, I was finally able to convince you to take back your defective product for repair. That was now nearly two weeks ago. As far as I've been told, my laptop is still "Awaiting spare parts". You could have sent me a new one in this time, and I would not have known or cared - I had it for three hours! I didn't even have time to install anything! Enough. Here is my ultimatum. If I do not have my laptop, functional and in my hands, by the end of the month, I will: a) Reverse the charges and demand a full refund b) Take my business elsewhere (I've heard MSI is good, but I'm open to suggestions, readers public) c) Recommend to everyone I know, and to anyone who will listen, against buying anything from you again. Now, I may do that last one anyways. In a way, I already am, by posting this publicly. But I'm (quite generously, in my opinion) withholding final judgement until I've had a chance to use and judge the actual product. You know, the one I bought and paid for two months ago. If the product is actually good, I may chalk this all up as just a lengthy series of unlucky mishaps. Everyone makes mistakes - even if 99.999% of the time you do things perfectly, you'll still have problems with that last 0.001%. I just had the misfortune to be that guy. It happens. Better companies have done worse. It is still possible for you to salvage this. But you're going to have to do something beyond what I've seen over the past two months.
I linked to that in my response to the typical "how was your tech support?" survey they sent me. Sharing here because I'm not sure I'll get a response from Asus unless I actually start making a fuss.
I got my VPS from BuyVM.net, I'm going to transfer my stuff over from my Secured Speed VPS tomorrow, so the domain pointing to the mumble server will go down. Once I get the config file and the database restored, I'll post the IP so you can connect while I'm mucking about with the DNS entries on my registrar.
Funny thing is, I'm using an Asus monitor right now

Well, one of the early drafts had me plotting the destruction of their entire country, just out of spite. I considered paraphrasing Halsey, but that would probably have crossed some sort of line... It actually wouldn't be too hard to destroy Taiwan. There's a standing threat to do so by the PRC - if any major country recognized Taiwan as a separate country from China, they've vowed to destroy them. Now all I need to do is trick some world leader into officially recognizing a rather obvious truth... Huh. Might be harder than I thought...
