I've never heard of an Asus that shipped with Linux, was it a netbook?

Possibly they were using Xubuntu to test it and they forgot to put windows on it before they shipped it?
[QUOTE=tratzzz;36688642]Got a lappy from my coworker.
I will have to decrapify a HP Pavilion G6.

No, it was a cheap one. Came without Windows to make the production costs cheaper probably or some shit.
It was advertised like that too.
But the HP is only like 3 days old, he hasn't used it for anything else than slight web browsing. He also tried to install Avast! but norton fucked his way up.

Norton is some kind of malware with how much of an asshole it is. Definitely get that DBAN'd.

Reset CMOS?
If not flash bios.
One of the function keys should get you into the boot order menu, probably F12.
Not the BIOS itself but you can still boot into whatever it detects is bootable media
I think the boot menu is something stupid like F8 on those models, it also makes an ear drum piercing beep if you press it too many times
Probably.
I've never been able to test one since I've pushed all my friends away from buying DV6's.
I don't know why people still buy DV6's. They're cheap but you get what you pay for in the end - an open space heater that can play youtube videos.
[QUOTE=paul simon;36688093]I've not experienced microstuttering myself.
What is it, and how is it different from regular stuttering?[/QUOTE]
Microstutter is annoying because it has nothing to do with like loading materials or something lie that, it's a timing issue, it has to do with when the frames are rendered in game-time. You could have a rock solid 60fps with each frame 16.7ms apart, but when those frames were rendered in the game engine varies, but when the frames are displayed is always the same.
So pretty much on dual GPU systems, frame A on GPU1 would render, then maybe 8ms later Frame B on GPU2 is rendered, even though frame B should be rendered 16ms later. Both frames will be sown 16ms apart even though in the game they are 8ms apart.
That is microstutter.

i don't get whats so bad about dv6 models, they don't even get that hot and are decent for source gaming and medium-low on other games, for example my mother uses it to browse the web and edit word documents and it's fast, responsive and overall nice.
it might get hot when you try running bf3 on there with max settings but that is obviously not what they were designed for.

impossible to service, cheap materials with a good amount of flex, will overheat and since its hard to service you will have a great time cleaning the fan
they're just overall shitty machines marketed to idiots. every dv6 I've seen has been broken in some way. friend's DV6 cooking itself while making a spreadsheet. display models having all kinds of problems. another friend's PC having display cable sheared (I'm not kidding, it was just torn.) loaded with more bloatware than imaginable.

alright, I give you the bloatware, that was indeed a pain in the ass, but a new installation of windows fixed that.
I have yet to see any of these other problems though.

[editline]9th July 2012[/editline]
unlike other laptops that you replace because they're outdated you replace a DV6 because it cooks itself.
Back from swimming, lets check out the laptop again.
Windows boot loader, windows boot loader, no I do not want to change settings. And then, I realized that there is only a fucking millisecond of a time when you can press F9 to change the boot order to boot from the DVD drive instead of the HDD.
Seriously, the moment is so fucking instant.
we're nearing somewhat close to the thread limit, is everything decided (who posts, thread title, etc)
Can I have the thread?
If we go by the posts per thread thing, then Wingar wins again.
and i vote the thread title to be Sheep's Build Memorial edition
it was turned into an abomination ;-;
[editline]9th July 2012[/editline]
also i make the most ~KWALITY~ posts so i want the thread
Oh so there is a thread limit again?
There's been so many changes back and forth about that :v:

tratzzz is a plus member
more exclusive than glod mnember
Why the fuck are drivers like FUCKHUGE, like 100MB+
It is a major pain in the ass when you DO NOT FUCKING KNOW WHICH ONE IS THE REAL ONE BECAUSE HP CAN'T FUCKING DECIDE WHOSE WIFI ADAPTER ARE WE GOING TO USE ON THIS FUCKING MODEL!
Seriously, for the G6s, there are like 4 different manufacturers. WTF HP, I guess you weren't even thinking.
Probably for the + x number of guests.
