XP is very useful for older machines and netbooks. I never found Win 7 or Vista good for the mentioned.

You're almost right. Vista runs like shit on older machines and netbooks.
7 however runs good on even an Eee PC.
Windows 7 is possibly worse than Vista.
It has a horrid interface when upgrading from XP, user controlling and all kinda crap that XP has simple. Also, most drivers aren't compatible.

"Horrid interface when upgrading from XP": Get used to it. You also did from Win 98 -> XP. Do it with Win7 too. For example: It took me around 1 week until I stopped missing the "Up-Button" in the explorer (the breadcrumb is much more powerfull).
"User Controlling": You are finally not at Admin-Rights all the time (which is a bad idea). Linux works similar - well, even better. But you can also simply disable the UAC.
"Most drivers aren't compatible": I installed a Windows XP x64 network driver on my Sisters PC. It works perfectly. And for 98% of all common hardware, Windows 7 has drivers . At least via Windows Update. And most Vista drivers are still compatible in Windows 7.
i use xp because i feel comfortable with it and it's compatible with some old programs.
most of the stuff i use on my pc don't work on vista or 7
I've only had one problem with 7 and that was to do with the audio drivers it chose not supporting stereo mix which I needed for something. Otherwise I love it, it has these little bits which just make you smile when you come across them.
I for one will miss the plain chunky windows XP start bar and its boring menus with shitty error sounds and boring logion screens. Will you ?
I'm pretty sure you can get a theme that does all that on the newer versions.
I'm pretty sure you can get a theme that does all that on the newer versions.
But why get a theme if you can get a new os with much more improvements?

read this as "I'm afraid of change"

Not for mine and my dads, XP is still the best option. Or Linux but I shouldn't be mentioning that in the Windows sub-forum.

XP is very simple and I loved it, although your post is flawed. You need to learn to accept change and just get used to it since XP isn't going to be around forever. I'm currently using Win7 on 3 PCs, my gaming rig which is 2 years old and drivers are automatically found. My Dell from 2004 all the drivers were found and downloaded, and last but not least my older Dell Inspiron laptop. Everything works how can it not work for you?

Unfortunately, you are still wrong or are doing it wrong somehow. Windows 7 is pretty damn snappy on the Eee PC.
And Linux is the best option? Ha! Oh yeah, because who doesn't just love having to compile everything themselves and still get like 1/300 of the applications of Windows? The ATi drivers don't even fucking work properly.

Give me the Hyundai, I hate American cars. BUT, I just generally hate 7. It does run slower than Vista for me, and first impressions are everything.

You're doing it wrong then.
Well it's 'massive' to me. Usually I only see a few updates. Not that many at once.
That was the biggest patch tuesday MS has done so far.

Don't mind them, "You're doing it wrong" is just an excuse for "We have no clue what the problem is." in this case (and I don't really know either). It's obvious that *something*, whether it be OS/Drivers/Software/Hardware, is not working properly if you're having performance significantly slower than Vista. However, I wouldn't go around telling all of your friends not to try it for that reason. Most people will experience a performance increase.

Especially since the Windows forum seems to live in the 80s. Compiling everything? Come on... At least try the damn thing.

Funny, Windows 3.0 didn't even come out in the 80's.
Also, you trying to compare Windows to Linux makes me laugh.

I don't think you understood me well. I'm not comparing Windows and Linux, I'm just saying that your comment about Linux requiring you to compile anything would've been relevant and accurate if this were the 80s, back when the GNU OS was being created and Linux was being built.
I'm skipping vista and installing Win7 on all my computers as soon as they ship my upgrade discs to me
The only problem I have with Win7 is the fact that I won't be able to run Office2000/2003 without the virtual XP mode. I really hate ribbonUI and am quite used to work with the setup I created which allows me to work quite efficiently.
Granted I have not tried Win7, but can someone tell me if there is a noticeable speed difference when using the XP compat. mode?
I'm keeping windows XP on my main pc and windows 7 on my laptop, and things will stay like this.

You can run office 2000/2003 without XP mode, you know.
Thankyou everyone for your views and everything, But we can come to one conclusion - Windows XP WINS
Superbar is fucking awesome, should be enough to change from XP.
It's my opinion.
Fix'd, no contest.
I love XP and 7 they just feel snug and comfy.

. we're still stuck with .ico files forever
Maybe because ico files can have multiple icons...in various sizes, various color depths etc. Whereas a png icon is only one single file and doesn't scale that terribly well.
Just look at icons and compare the list 16x16 icons with a normal sized one - it's actually not just a scaled down icon.
Whoever made this thread is an idiot. He should have known it would cause one giant clusterfuck.
No point with sticking with XP unless you're someone who believes it's 10x better than any other OS.
It pisses me off that Vista and 7 are necessary if you're a gamer. Too many new games these days demand that you have Dx10 to enjoy the game :argh:
