I'm currently running factory Android 1.6 - Donut on a T-Mobile G1 and I've been searching for the past two hours on numerous sites like the XDA forums to root my phone, but I can't find anything to get me going. So my question is: How do you root your phone, what guides did you use?

Nevermind, I think I finally got it.

redid it because why not

That is sexy.
Widgets make me cry inside
I don't get this whole Android thing. If it's an operating system, why must I go to such extreme lengths to put it on something? Also, why does every phone or tablet have their own custom version? Is it possible to even have a "vanilla" Android OS?

1. Customization. People eat that shit up.
2. Different ROMs, but they're all based off vanilla android ROMs.
3. Yes, of course. A stock ROM.
What if I don't have an android.
If it's an operating system, why must I go to such extreme lengths to put it on something?
Because phones aren't supposed to be compatible with multiple OSes so there are no standard ways of installing Android. Or good driver support.
You don't have to go to extreme lengths to install Android on a phone that comes with it obviously, and it's not really a good idea to put it on anything else. Pretty hacky.
Any good 4x1 widgets out there?
My new Nexus One home screen. and yes, that is a Super Mario 3(ish) live wallpaper. (Defects in it are due to ShootMe)
This thread makes me want an Android phone so bad.
The EVO, easily.
The thing that turns me off of the EVO(besides the lack of 4G in New York and that I hate Sprint) is SENSE. I hate SENSE.

Fucking this, are there even any <$200 Android-enabled phones? I weeped when I saw the pricetag of the Dell Streak :<

speaking of EVO, turnoff, and Sense, you can turn Sense off on the EVO.
I think its to demonstrate tracking accuracy. Like the other guy said, it might have been a defective/not as well made Moto Droid that messed with the results.
That reminds me. Was there a revision to the design or something? I keep seeing Droids with flat keyboards but I got mine kinda late and my keyboard is raised. My dad also got his later and his is the same way. Did something change or did some models just ship with a bad keyboard or did some just ship with better keyboards?
(Yes, I just quoted something 2 weeks old. Anyone can answer the question though.)
The EVO has incredibly bad battery life, I don't know how anyone could ever want it.

There are quite a few Android phones for under $100, look around.

Android 2.2 running on my Moto Droid.
Did you root it or is it out already?
I just picked up an HTC Aria yesterday. I'm liking AndroidOS so much better than iPhoneOS on my old 3G. Now how would I go about giving myself root access on this phone?

what provider did you get?
what provider did you get?
at&t
why?
AT&T prevents you from installing shit NOT from the official android market, and they have their own stupid software on there that you CANNOT remove

Well, I'm stuck with AT&T, otherwise I would have gotten one of the many Android phones on Verizon. My dad has used and is still using an iPhone, and is unwilling to change plans for just me because it's cheaper to be under a family plan than it is to be on my own separate plan with a different provider... :saddowns:
I've been looking up some guides, apparently it is possible to root the HTC Aria without much difficulty.
[editline]03:33AM[/editline]
Ok, so there's a modified ROM that removes all the AT&T bloatware, reverts the AT&T boot screen to a standard one, and sets the browser homepage to google search. :v:
Apparently it also removes AndroidMusic.apk.. I might just go ahead and do it the classic way. Android SDK/adb + clockwork, I want to have a backup of my current ROM just in case..
well yeah for just about all android devices there is/will be a root, but the thing is with Android, the aim is that it's open and that means you shouldn't have to do shit like root/jailbreak to get it to do what you want.
Verizon and AT&T don't understand this. Verizon (most likely) forced this same shit on both Motorola with the first Droid and on HTC with the Droid Incredible. probably with the Droid X as well (except both Verizon and Motorola claim it's not running anything extra, just widgets...that i'm pretty sure you can't uninstall).
in fact i think the first mostly open Android 2.0+ phone that isn't the Nexus One is the EVO.

The Milestone (European/non-US/GSM Droid) doesn't boot unsigned firmware, making installing custom ROMs impossible. And that's not bound to any carrier.
With the new Samsung Vibrant recently announced for T-Mobile, I believe I have found my next phone, unless something better comes out before I am eligible.

HTC Evo
To the people with any kind of task killer installed, you don't need one. Android is built around putting your applications to sleep in the background for a reason, it will kill things automatically if you need the memory.
Until 2.2 comes out for the incredible I'll keep it installed since sometimes flash lite locks up the browser.

Wow. I wish this thing had a physical keyboard. Otherwise, dream phone.

Love it (except the first screen, didn't know what to do with it so put random game shortcuts)
Did you root it or is it out already?
Root'd. Still, works like a charm.
Is the HTC incredible good? It's the one I'm leaning towards. However, I probably won't be able to get it until sometime next year. Is there anything better coming out?
