never seen this before. tried to format the USB pen 3 times, same settings, no dice. tried downloading a new .iso, still not working.
the settings I've used
Ah good old Arch USB Stick failing to find file X.
I've had this happen so many times now.

is there a way to fix this?
god, this is annoying. been googling back and forth and I can't find anyone else with the same issue. decided to try CTKarch to install then just strip it clean but that doesn't want to install either.

Whenever I came accross such a problem with Arch (they happen more than I like), I just say fuck it, and go with Debian Sid.

Have you tried using GRUB instead of Syslinux? Are you trying to do EFI? Syslinux has issues with that.

I always use GRUB, this occurs when I try to start the arch live CD so I can install the system. boot up, choose the USB, that screen. I haven't installed anything yet since I can't get past that

A friend of mine recently fixed a problem similar to this by just writing the ISO directly to the USB with Win32DiskImager.
Ah, I forgot that the live image uses syslinux. It looks like you're trying to do manual formatting which looks really complicated. I've always stuck with using dd and haven't had any problems.

I also have had lots of strange and random errors with different "Live USB Creators", some similar to the one you experience. Have you tried an different tool for creating it? Those who always work for me is LiLi and plain old dd.
Spotify weighed in on what they want as the init system for Debian (systemd, what a shocker):

I've always found USBImageTool to work better. Does the same thing pretty much but does backups as well amongst other stuff
http://www.alexpage.de/usb-image-tool/
A couple hours after the email from Spotify regarding systemd vs upstart, someone from fucking CERN chimed in:
https://lists.debian.org/debian-ctte/2014/01/msg00292.html
If the people with voting power go with Upstart, there's most probably going to be a General Resolution on the matter, I'm not exactly sure how that process works though.
just decide already damn
I'm sticking with Fedora before I think about anything else, systemd and SELinux are coooooooooooool.
I've honestly been thinking about Arch, the installation is such a pain in the ass though.
If you have a setup you like already, try not to jump for the sake of it. You'll get stuck in a loop of trying different distros and never being able to settle.
If I hated jumping from distro to distro, I'd have admitted defeat and just installed Bedrock Linux already.
I absolutely hate Arch when it comes to installing the thing. for some reason it decided to ignore the fact that I made the Linux partition at /dev/sda3 and not at the beginning. it wiped windows' partitions. fair enough, everything I care about is on my HDD and not my SSD so not a big loss. but now it complains about the partition being in use when trying to format it to ext4. wow, it's not in use you dumb piece of shit. I just made it. anyone has an idea what to do? what it says in detail
root@archiso ~ # mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1
mke2fs 1.42.8 (20-Jun-2013)
/dev/sda1 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!
it doesn't complain when I format the home partition on my HDD, only when trying to format the root partition on the SSD. please arch, stop complaining.
[editline]18th January 2014[/editline]
apparently the live CD thought the partition was in RAID. fixed it by
mdadm --stop /dev/md127
then doing the mkfs.ext4 thing. I feel that Linux/arch doesn't like SSD's that much. been a whole other experience to install arch on my SSD everytime after I got it
[editline]18th January 2014[/editline]
wow holy shit arch.
been fighting the installation for over an hour now, and problem after problem arises. for whatever reason /dev/sda1, aka my root partition, is write protected. I have no clue why. I've started over and it's still write protected. anyone got a clue on how to make it not write protected?
on the edge of giving up now
2 hours fighting and I made it, woohoo!
noticed something which is pretty bad though. my keepass database (*.kdb) is apparently an outdated format and I can't open it in linux. tried to do as it said and import it, but it tells me that feature is only available on windows since it's windows code or something. how would I get my passwords out of there?

Try this, maybe? Check the third post: http://www.keepassx.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1733
Edit:
Or install a Windows VM using Virtualbox on your Linux machine and try to convert the old format to a new format.

don't have windows installed so that wouldn't work. could WINE possibly work?
WINE is a possibility, but getting things to work with WINE is often like playing Blackjack.
https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=5780
As you can see, version 2.x seems to work on WINE. Install that and see if it has a conversion function.
Using Mint on a VM. I don't like the font.

no dice, doesn't launch at all for me

Use winecfg to set your Windows version to Windows XP.
Download and install winetricks and issue the command:
# winetricks dotnetfx20
That should get things going.

I'd log onto steam if I had the password... :v:
already installed the dotnet, made a launcher script but that doesn't work either

Can you post what's happenning exactly? Like what errors it gives in the terminal?
If all else fails, you should install virtualbox and install Windows on it, and try to extract your passwords that way.

Oh right.
# WINEARCH=.winekeepass winetricks dotnetfx20
Hope that helps. Try adding msvcirt too.
Edit:
On another note, you probably need vcrun2005 as well.
finally solved that by using the first version and manually migrating to the new database.
a new issue though. need to install a custom certificate onto my PC, so the firewall can inspect secure traffic and monitor it for malware. figured I'd have to put it in /etc/ssl/certs, but I need to put a .pem in there for it to read, right?
decided to try converting my .crt to a .pem by doing this
[root@RagingArch Documents]# openssl x509 -in pa.local.crt -out pa.local.der -outform DER
unable to load certificate
139812181698192:error:0906D06C:PEM routines:PEM_read_bio:no start line:pem_lib.c:703:Expecting: TRUSTED CERTIFICATE
not working.
[editline]18th January 2014[/editline]
well got it turned into a .pem but where do I put it for it to apply?
I absolutely hate Arch when it comes to installing the thing... it wiped windows' partitions.
What do you mean by "it"? Unless you're using a really old live ISO, Arch's installation is not automated. Which means that if anything got incorrectly wiped it's because you used the wrong drive/partition names in some command.
