opensuse is the bomb just putting that out there
opensuse is the bomb just putting that out there
Yeah, my experiences with the little chameleon have always been positive. Good hardware compatibility, it's pretty damn stable and YaST is nice and straightforward. Definitely a sound choice for someones first *nix experience.

installing kde fixed my audio drivers go figure
Would Fedora (after installing stuff like flash, java, codecs etc) be a good OS for a linux novice? I have to look for one for my boss. He really wants to try out linux on his desktop at home.
I'm new at linux and I was able to get Mint up and running off a bootable 4gb USB stick. It's a fully loaded install, music player, GIMP, VLC, Firefox, and so on. It looks and runs similar to Windows so I can't imagine an easier version of linux for someone to test out.

As a everyday OS for my use, I've had to remove Cinnamon and use XFCE (which I've always liked) because my laptop doesn't seem to agree with Linux in general and now actually runs nicely (seriously, should an i3-2310m run slowly?).
Sometimes I think to myself "I should install Gentoo." Then I come to my senses and the thought passes.

My father's C2D Gateway seems to get along fine with Cinnamon, interestingly enough. But whatever. Speaking of XFCE, does anyone know of some decent XFCE skins? I'm using a default which is fine, but it feels like I'm using a UI from 1999. :v: Maybe one of you guys know some that look pretty nice but not rice.
I got my wifi working on wireless properly some time ago. Now I can use linux here at the university! Wooot.
Okay so like I have an SSD and a HDD, I have Windows 7 installed to my SSD and I am trying to install Mint onto my HDD but I cannot get the fucker to boot. Any ideas?

I don't get why he hates RedHat though. If he wants to fork debian go ahead but don't start whining when a majority of the committee wants to use systemd.

They should add an "init system" line to archey. :P
It should just zero out your MBR if you're not using Systemd.
It should just zero out your MBR if you're not using Systemd.
Nah, just do a 35 write pass on the entire HDD silently. Wait.... I'm using Debian and init.d. Fuck.
[t]http://img.nikomo.fi/2014-02-13-180353_1366x768_scrot.png[/t]
How long does sysvinit take?
apt-get install systemd systemd-sysv At least on jessie/testing/whatever you want to call it, and unstable. Might not work on stable, but who the hell uses stable outside servers, packages on stable are way too old for desktop usage. [editline]13th February 2014[/editline]
How long does sysvinit take?
It was way longer, but sysvinit doesn't keep track of how long it takes to boot, so I'd have to switch back and manually time it. I'm thinking it was around 45 seconds.
What does a modification of a distro have to qualify to be called a new distro based on X? I think I made a pretty sweet thin client today that allows for branding etc and runs extreemly fast on the raspberry pi.
Recently upgraded my computer and got 16GB of RAM, cause "why not?" Maybe I'll write a script to load my entire root FS into cache on boot.
Lots and lots of browser tabs.

It spent the next 19m years in a museum before being sent back in time to me as part of Seagates refurbeshed drive program. EDIT: How do I conjugate verbs with time travel? I need a futre-past tense or something.
http://akaros.cs.berkeley.edu/files/Plan9License wow
Ubuntu is switching to Systemd, top lel. http://www.markshuttleworth.com/archives/1316 Now there's like what, Gentoo and Slackware or something that don't have Systemd by default, since they don't have defaults.
I for one welcome our new RedHat overlords.
