General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. I broke my Arch Install

Tried a test copy of Fedora Rawhide to see how Gnome 3.12 was coming. Some things I like a lot, some I don't.
The people designing these new title bar buttons, in their infinite wisdom, have split certain functions. For example, gedit. I was trying to figure out how to turn off the status bar. I clicked the little settings icon on the new title bar. No option to turn it off or access the options. Turns out the preferences are now located in the appmenu...
This complicates things for me. If I use xfce panel, there's no way for me to integrate those menus. I had planned on using certain extensions to remove titlebars as well... So I have two choices.
1. Ditch gnome and embrace xfce completely, wait a long time for proper gtk3 support. I will also lose activities, and AFAIK there's no currently maintained alternative.
2. Totally embrace gnome, and completely customize with extensions. With Gnome PANEL, I can still combine the app menu with free desktop/unity/appmenu extensions... so I could still go with my plan to remove title bars of maximized windows. But you lose the freedom to really tweak the panel.
3. Do what I was gonna do with Gnome + Xfce and wait till 3.12 rolls around to break things
Gnome will look much nicer with better integration once I've souped it up. But xfce offers more freedom. Not sure what to do
So my Windows 8.1 installation got destroyed and I've installed Linux Mint 16. It's been a while since i last used Linux as the main OS, anything new I should know?

Not really. Graphics should perform a bit better lately. Have fun!

Also posting from a SliTaz installation on an SDHC plugged into my netbook, with my on-board HDD mounted as /home!
Sorry for the late reply but why would you just assume that I am new to Linux?

Anyway I had issues installing arch, my ISP has a web portal and arch being text based I have no way to log in.
I tried w3m but I Think it needs javascript for the login.
I guess I could throw X/openbox/browser packages on a flash drive and install them but I can't be bothered. I've already used most of my data cap trying to install on to a physical disk from virtualbox with no luck.
Maybe next month.
Have you tried the links browser? It claims to support javascript, at least in some capacity.
so if you want to fuck up Arch enable dhcpcd without passing a parameter for the NIC
as of systemd210 (I think) it fucks everything
spent a combined 9 hours debugging this bullshit thinking it was the kernel's fault

Thanks for the information.

I think it's been that way for a while. I don't remember ever being able to run dhcpcd without telling it the interface.
Generally speaking, what would be the best Linux distro to install on an old Dell desktop with a Pentium 3 @ 500mhz and 128MB of ram?

Looking at those pics, I kinda want to travel with RMS, he seems to get around quite a lot.

Anything that doesn't come with a desktop environment (I know Arch, but there are probably others). That would be the biggest performance killer when it comes to every-day use. Then you can install a minimal window manager like openbox.
You can install whatever you want and try to yank out the resource-hungry stuff, but I find that to be more difficult.

I figured I can do with Linux Mint Xfce edition for the moment, I needed something I could install offline for the moment until I can hook it up somewhere else so it has a constant connection.

That's weird, I've run dhcpcd manually without specifying interface multiple times, and it's worked fine for me.
Then again I only have one interface so it's quite possible dhcpcd knows not to ask stupid questions :v:
Looks like I managed to break something again, this time when my system boots I see the gnome splash screen right before the login screen and then it hangs on the splash screen.
I can switch to another workspace and login there, but cannot start up a gui like gnome. So I am at a loss here. What I did before was install openCV and used those two lines for it to isntall.
sudo apt-get install build-essential
sudo apt-get install libopencv-dev
Anyone knows what do to?
My laptop is using an AMD card, I've seen some nvidia drivers downloaded when I executed the second command.

Those two lines should not break your system. Even though if you installed some nvidia drivers, it should not be a problem as those should not be used since you have an AMD card.
Try booting in recovery mode and check your kernel and xorg log.
this line should break your system
sudo apt-get purge libc6 --yes --force-yes
hi from bsd
screenshots are not working that well so just take this
curl "https://nnmm.nl/?0pEVN" --silent
That's the most edgy hostname I've seen in a while.

I can get into recovery, but for example I cannot run failsafeX. There it tells me that no screens are found.
I have access to the log files over the other workspaces now, what am I looking for in there?
The bsd distro(?) was called GhostBSD and I was too lazy to come up with a good name. I used to name my systems schrodingers-{PET}. So shrodingers-cat/dog/hamster etc. Or Beta/Alpha/Omega/etc Mechazawa, not_a_[object] (not_a_refrigerator/microwave etc)
Post virtual Stallmans?

Also, I need to switch to another screenshot utility, I love scrot but I can't get image quality to be good.

I use fedora on all my other systems so no need for vrms.
and my servers: http://nnmm.nl/?uJDUb
all 3 are the same except for the one that runs fedora
I guess this can go here too

I invented a new game. It is called "Wobbly Windows or Screen Tearing?"

Graphics suck, gameplay is unoriginal but solid. Doesn't cost a dime, which is always nice, and the engine's pretty stable too.
Overall you're not stupid for playing this, but I'd rather play Catch That Knife.
Just had an interesting idea. There's a GNOME extension called "World Clock" that places custom clocks in the panel. That's not the coolest part though. It has a custom "position" setting. You choose the left, center, or right part of the panel, and then you can move it left or right along that part of the panel.
So I thought, why not incorporate this with other panel extensions? It wouldn't be as intuitive as say XFCE or Cinnamon, but it would open up a lot of customization options.

Anyone here know anything about GNOME extensions or Java in general? I'm not sure what bits of code would need duplicating.

If this could somehow be forked into the most popular panel extensions (notifications, mail, etc) I think this would solve GNOME's biggest problem
RAM for laptop arrived today.

I need to change a few minor things still, and I will probably never reinstall the OS on my laptop - I love this thing.
Finally fixed my display problem, the cause was really that it installed nVidia drivers over my AMD drivers. First time I had to purge something.
Now I get tons of error messages when ever I log in into gnome-shell.

Well, ive finally gotten around to installing fedora 20 on my desktop so i can dual boot with windows 8.1. I know my way around linux and terminal fairly well, as ive taken a few linux classes at my tech school. The only thing is, now that i got it installed and set up, what do? Basically what are some cool awesome things i can do with it? Also is there steam for fedora yet?
