General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. I broke my Arch Install

clearly seems to be a NAS. hard to tell why the connection wants to be redirected there so badly.
I think I don't mind Manjaro's repos not being bleeding edge. It feels more stable. AwesomeWM seems to have fixed itself. The fun may continue!
Pamac still doesn't work when running it from my user in AwesomeWM, but running it with sudo works. I like how it works.
Been trying to install Parabola Libre Gnu/Linux on my laptop. I swear this laptop is from hell. I've tried to install a lot of different distros on it and I always have problems. First, during install with a tethered ethernet connection, pacman would stop downloading the packages at 99%. I thought maybe it was a problem with the connection so I got home now. Same problem. I'd though I'd reinstall the live cd on my usb. This gets even worse now, I spent 20 minutes reinstalling on different usbs, because I couldn't see the error. It could also just be unetbootin being absolutely terrible, I don't know. All I know is, if it persists I'm gonna end up with grey hairs.
Google corrected it to Intel Iris and found information related to NAS servers
Does anyone know if it's possible to use linux to install Windows vidcard drivers?
I installed 14.4 in Win7, now it freezes in the 'starting Windows' screen. Letting Windows try to repair it doesn't work. It locks up trying to get into safe mode too. I don't have a restore point to fall back on. I have Mint installed on a spare hard drive and I'm using that to boot up.
I can just reinstall Win7 but I'd like to save all that hassle. I was thinking maybe there's a way to manually place the driver files into the various folders.

Last known good configuration should work for you; bad video card drivers is actually one of their example use-cases. If anything, I think Windows Recovery will be your best bet. Try following the instructions of this KB to see if you can disable the driver.

I guess technically you could, but I think it'd be easier and faster and simpler to simply start Windows in safe mode. Do this by spamming the F8 button when Windows is about to start up. It should give you a menu that allows for selection of "Safe Boot" modes.
edit
I guess I didn't read. That's a big issue you're having there. You did try the bare minimum safe mode I'm guessing, right? If so, I'm sorry. I really have no idea.

Doesn't safe mode use a generic video driver, so he should be able to at least boot? I haven't used 7 in safe mode in forever.
Finally set up a GitHub account. I'll be posting stuff there when the project gets going. Right now I'm just compiling a useful list of Arch packages, and maybe a quick install guide for myself.

[editline]28th April 2014[/editline]
If you guys have any suggestions for packages in the repos/AUR let me know, either here or on git. I've just done a base install with what I would consider "necessities" (plus a bunch of browsers and themes for testing)
[editline]28th April 2014[/editline]
I've also added a basic installation guide for myself, so I don't have to browse through the wiki to find certain commands. It's specific to my system, but maybe it will help one of you?
Well, 'last known good configuration' didn't work.
So I have to reinstall Win7 I guess. It's not really a big deal except for all the time I'm going to waste getting everything back the way it was. On the other hand, I'm probably going to spend a bunch of time on Mint, since it's up and ready to use now.
One issue already popped up wth Mint. After I installed Mint, I updated it, During the update it mentioned that a 'defaul list configuration file' was edited by me or a script, and do I want to keep it or replace it with the one in these updates? I selected 'replace' since the new one is bundled with the updates so it's probably related to those files right?
Then watched a video. The screensaver kicked in after about 10 minutes. So I shut it off. Then later, I switched back on the option to blank the screen after 10 minutes, but not use the screensaver.
When I booted up this morning it force logged me out after 10 seconds. The error message mentioned something about the screensaver entry not being found. So did replacing the script do this or did switching off the screensaver do this?
I reinstalled a fresh Mint and that's what I'm using now. I elected to keep the default list config file this time. We'll see how this goes. I turned off the screensaver again too.
Help!

These fuckups show with various command outputs. I think it has something to do with the locale, but I have no clue how to solve it. I couldn't find anything on Google either, does anyone have a clue on what to do?
It's not the font (monospace 8) either.
Better example:

I'm not even using weird characters!
xfce4-terminal if you ask.
I think there's an option that forces xfce4-terminal to use/not-use unicode which might help reveal the problem. (something like xfce4-terminal --utf-8)
Checking if uxterm (or xterm -u8) has the same problem could help find the solution.
Otherwise you can try messing with the locale following instructions here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/locale

Oh man Mint is so nice, it works.
If only the suspend function wouldn't break my wifi and cause my screen to start twitching.

If I had to hazard a guess, you're getting screwed over with your locale's idea of smart quotes. What's the output of 'locale'?

I'm in Ubuntu with Gnome
So the top window bar and the menu bar are separated and uses too much space
Is it possible to merge them?

With Chromium you can, Firefox probably has something similar. Have you looked through the settings?

It would be nice to fix it for as many programs as possible without having to configure them all
[t]http://i.imgur.com/euyBVeR.png[/t]
I'm trying to get arch to work on my media PC, but I can't get any window managers to start. I just did a fresh install, following the official installation guide to the t. After that I rebooted and configured a netctl ethernet profile, then i installed xfce4 and xorg (i did 'pacman -S xorg xfce4'). I created a user for myself, logged into that and ran 'startx xfce4'. Screen goes blank, and then some xorg console output shows up. My system is now completely frozen.
How do I fix this? I've tried Debian and Manjaro, and they both work without problems. I think the issue might be with the newer kernel in Arch and the radeon drivers (I'm using an ATI 4770).

If you press Ctrl + C, you should be able to close Xwindows to the terminal. It does that weird hang thing on mine as well. Sounds like an issue I was having on my laptop. I just didn't have the intel drivers installed. You may also want to check the Xwindow log ("/var/log/Xorg.0.log").

Depends on the program you're using. GTK2 and qt applications can't, sans special cases like Firefox where you can use extensions. But no, there's no way to configure them to do this.
GTK3 applications past 3.10 are designed to do this:

Gedit and Web, respectively. If you're on Ubuntu, you're going to have to use some testing repository to get these updated applications.

Problem solved, the default encoding setting in xfce4-terminal was set to "Default: ISO-8859-1". I feel really stupid for not checking that setting.
But why is that the default?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I haven't actually had the chance to try this, but I wasn't even able to change tty after attempting to launch xfce, so I don't think that would work. I also discovered that the correct command is "startxfce4". They both freeze my system completely though.
Anyway, I tried another graphics card I had laying around, and that worked. Sadly it's only a 3450, so it's a massive turd. I also have an unused 5870, but that would be pushing the PSU a bit (it's from a Dell XPS 420, rated 410w on the 12v rail).
I also noticed quite a bit of tearing when playing video and moving windows around. In Manjaro I remember there being option to enable vsync with compositing, but that option isn't there in Arch. Some googling tells me that the default xfce compositor does not have vsync capability, so I will have to replace it to get that working. I've seen a few different compositors suggested though. Some suggest compton, but also indicate that it has some problems, while others are suggesting xfwm4-vsync from the AUR. In the comments on the xfwm4-vsync package, there's a guy saying the changes in that package have been merged into xfwm4-git.
Should I install xfwm4-git, or are there any other solutions?
Manjaro has compiled a version of xfwm 4.11 for their xfce release, so they have vsync.
Compton is a better compositor than xfwm anyway.
I've just been using compton because my intel GPU needs it for V-sync to function correctly.
[editline]30th April 2014[/editline]
Shadows are a nice touch though.
I ended up trying both xfwm4-git and compton. The newer xfwm didn't completely fix tearing, even with the sync to vblank option enabled, so now I'm using compton.
So for the first time ever I'm in a situation where I actually want to be able to use a tiling WM and I can't because I'm stuck with Windows. Woe is me.

Ubuntu for android
Replacing upstart with systemd
I hope Mir will be on that list in the future.
