Which version of Xorg supports doing it? Or how is it done, rather?
Xorg 1.16 at the very least supports it, I think Xorg 1.15 is also capable. I think you also need a slightly recent kernel, there was a patchset that got merged into mainline that allowed you to switch console without root. All you need to do is disable whatever display manager you're using, login on the CLI virtual tty, and start your window manager/desktop environment. And yeah, security is the main advantage.
I think I've always run rootless X since I switched to Arch. There's even an article about it https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_Login
# start X at login on TTY1 [[ $TTY == "/dev/tty1" ]] && exec startx
I'm asking primarily because of running SliTaz, and having that system be more secure would only be a plus. It uses SLiM as the login manager, but I suppose I could do without, especially on KVM switches.
Is the patchset specific to that kernel, or could it easily be backported?
I haven't got a clue, but there's still been a decent time since it was merged. As long as you're not using some 2.6 series kernel, you might want to try. Especially since all it involves is switching to another tty, logging in, startx and check the user running Xorg.
you're not being very helpful! how am I supposed to update the drivers without reinstalling when I have to update nvidia-beta before I can update nvidia-utils-beta? nvidia-beta can't be updated without nvidia-utils-beta being updated first, what a mess suppose I'll have to reinstall the nvidia drivers
Why are you using nvidia-beta? The stable release is at 340.24
Why are you using nvidia-beta? The stable release is at 340.24
the AUR packages have gone fairly unnoticed when upgrading packages, so I haven't updated the drivers in a while. beta version was more relevant when I first had it installed [editline]28th July 2014[/editline] and I accidentally removed every package which depended on the nvidia drivers :v: at least my system is fairly clean again
why are they even separate packages [editline]27th July 2014[/editline] the only thing i can think of that could really be installed separate from nvidia-drivers themselves is the gtk nvidia-settings utility
I have turned my cold, merciless editing gaze to the article on using systemd as a cron replacement since it was a bit shit. It's definitely clumsier than cron (adding one line to crontab vs. creating two unit files), but it also solves all of my major annoyances with cron (job dependency, timer staggering, logging, job environments). I recommend it.
Direct3D9 works quite nicely on Linux, apparently. Patched Mesa + patched WINE runs GTA4 quite nicely apparently.
Direct3D9 works quite nicely on Linux, apparently. Patched Mesa + patched WINE runs GTA4 quite nicely apparently.
It seems for a lot of tests that using the Gallium-Nine patch for mesa and DX9 patch for Wine allows most DX9-enabled games to run a LOT better, no wonder though. It's great, and hopefully when it is ironed out it can be implemented successfully into mainstream Wine releases to increase the amount of games that work out of the box and work great.
The WINE patch is fairly trivial, from what I understand, but Gallium Nine requires someone who's willing to maintain it, probably, before it'll be even considered for merging.
Alright, this suddenly happened: [t]http://i.imgur.com/Qw7YK1r.png[/t] EVERYTHING is helvetica-compressed. No CSS file tells it to be helvetica, no, but both firefox AND chrome decide to draw it using helvetica. What is going on here? The firefox default font is on "Serif". About:config has no mention of helvetica anywhere. Google shows no results. This is what some font test page shows (appears normal) [t]http://i.imgur.com/Uox46i8.png[/t]

Plasma 5 is out, some nice improvements. http://www.kde.org/announcements/plasma5.0/ Still not as good as I would like (especially the old UI bits that haven't been updated and clash horrendously), but the KDE Next team is showing some interesting stuff. The new Breeze theme engine looks cool: [t]http://www.kde.org/announcements/plasma5.0/screenshots/desktop.png[/t] And they're working on some interesting changes for KWin: [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/63396655/dec_tabs2.png[/t] [t]http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LtYOceNcfa0/U9aLPF7BjtI/AAAAAAAAQgQ/mZQtc7rJvR4/s1600/Calendar+Mockup.png[/t] They're also finally implementing design guidelines, so hopefully things should start looking better across the board: http://wheeldesign.blogspot.com/2014/07/layout-guidelines-quick-example.html Looking forward to what they show next. Don't think I'll ever ditch GTK, but if they keep up these improvements, this might get me to use their shell.
When Plasma 5 becomes the major release, I'll probably try a KDE5 install with i3 in place of KWin. It could potentially be bearable.
what exactly is plasma? I always thought it was KDE
KDE is basically the whole package (KDE Framework aka libraries and programs). Plasma is the desktop environment stuff. KWin is the window manager that the DE uses by default. That's how I've understood it.

KDE is the name of the organization. KDE SC is the name of the software bundle. KWin, Plasma, KDE Frameworks, and KDE Applications are all a part of KDE SC. KWin is sorta wonky. It pulls KDE dependencies, and you use the KDE system settings app to change the WM settings. Although I've heard they're trying to make it standalone. You can use Plasma without KWin, and you can use KWin in other environments. You can use KDE applications without using KWin or Plasma, they just use Qt.
I just hate how KDE is so...interconnected. It's hard to use any of the applications standalone because you pull down a shitton of dependencies and libraries. I really like Kate, it beats the shit out of gedit, but I don't want to have all the random KDE libs on my system.
They've been trying to fix that with KDE Frameworks 5. I don't know how successful they've been, but the goal was to keep libraries as separate as possible.
Lunix is a hacker OS so it's 5/5 bretty good
have you installed infinality and set the style to Mac? it'll change everything to helvetica which looks like ass
I haven't installed it explicitly. Maybe it sneaked into my system as a dependency? I'll take a look. edit: installing infinality and/or sudo fc-cache -fr fixed it.
Made a .gif in case I ever need to be really smug about not having a problem.
Probably going to have to remake that though, it's hard to align a floating window in i3, so there's the stupid empty space.
You also have empty space around your bloody picture. Also, with my new picture, I just went ahead and 1366/2, used that for picture width and put a terminal window next to it. Fuck it. [editline]30th July 2014[/editline] I'll meet you halfway if you agree to saying that Windows is shit.
[vid]http://a.pomf.se/bdcpge.mp4[/vid] tfw I can't get Linux because I spent £15 on this.

It's absolutely disgusting
I spontaneously installed Arch on an old laptop the other day (All I've ever done before is try out mint and ubuntu), is there anything I should do/know? Also, are there any good monospace pixel fonts? I'd like to use one in the terminal.
