My battery life increased on my side. 30 minutes to 3 hours is a pretty big increase.
What DE's do you guys recommend? I just want a beautiful DE which stands out, don't really care if it's resource intensive or not.
KDE, KDE's wares are pretty good but everybody seems to be obsessed with GNOME for some reason.
edit a WM does not a DE make.
Trying to install Arch on my SSD
Other than having to boot windows 5 times because some total pleb wrote install.txt (or rather, copied off the wiki and forgot all the subpages that actually contain important things), its also being a total jerk
I need to use ext4 for TRIM support, but it magically decided there are no files on the disk and now every file is 0 length

My avg. battery life went from 5 hours to 7 hours after installing TLP, I'd recommend everyone to try it if it's not already pre-installed on your distro (it isn't in Ubuntu).

If you really don't care for something resource-intensive, GNOME 3.8 isn't all that bad. Grew on it. Unity otherwise if you're wanting speed just as well as simplicity.

Anyone else fond of using Infinality?
I saw it recommended here earlier, and it looks pretty nice.

If you don't care for customization: Gnome 3's simplicity is amazing. It has a really beautiful sleek design that satisfies all my needs. It's few features guarantees they all work well and in tandem.
KDE for me was a giant clusterfuck, just like Windows. Had waaay too many complicated features that cluttered the taskbar and desktop for me. I hardly even tried it though, doesn't hurt for you to try it either.
Try installing a good display manager like gdm and then a bunch of DE's. Then use gdm to switch quickly between them till you find one you like. It's a pretty fancy and speedy way to find a DE you like.
I care for customization. I want a beautiful DE, it doesn't need to start out as a beautiful one but if I can customize it into one I'll be happy.
I'd like to try something else than Gnome for once. KDE looked kind of meh to be honest, judging from google images. Anyone here who use KDE and have a beautiful desktop?

Besides the massive load of extensions to get the shell working how you want, the user themes extension, and some shell themes, GNOME is actually quite customizable to a degree. And then GTK themes, so on...
Is it just me or do the Infinality vs. default screenshots look exactly the same :pwn:
The only difference I see is a minor change in font size?

I think infinality forces better hinting or something which results in that perceived change in size.

Cinnamon can look really nice imo. Can't answer your KDE question.

Just for input I use MATE. I'm not too sure about it being beautiful, but it is simple.
Discovered awesome and I'm loving it, only two or three things I don't like.
Is it possible to disable the touchpad whilst typing?
There is no volume control, I tried adding a widget and volume awesome just crashed.
Is it possible to save a session? Ideally I'd like to have chromium open when I start.

What the fuck, when I press "q" it stops me from typing, the key works (had to copy and paste it though) but pressing the key seems to do...something.
[editline]8th June 2013[/editline]
It's only lower case, shift + Q works fine. Argh.
Have you somehow bound the q key to some kind of global shortcut?
Have you somehow bound the q key to some kind of global shortcut?
I don't think so, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'll start again from scratch.
Any advice about the other issues?
[editline]8th June 2013[/editline]
q key works again! Reinstall fixed it, thanks.
I don't get any sound from Chrome in Xubuntu on my laptop, anyone else run into something like that? Firefox works fine, though I use Chrome on everything else.

I used to use Chrome, but it was annoying that they don't allow plugins to run on a bunch of common pages (like the new tab page...) and I use Vim-like plugins. Can't recommend anything but moving to Firefox :v:

For the touchpad I use gpointing-device-settings.
Lots of Linux users are bashing Garry because ... I don't get why.
I've heard people say "Garry doesn't give a fuck about Linux" etc.
I don't get it, he wouldn't have ported it in the first place if he really didn't give a fuck.
My Mint fucked things up with the distro upgrade (mostly visual stuff like missing GTK icons). I'll reinstall either Ubuntu or Mint when I have time and install GMod on it.
Lots of Linux users are bashing Garry because ... I don't get why.
He severely bashed Linux in the past, and also only offered Windows dedicated server files for quite some time.
My uneducated guess is THAT's why.
Garry has changed over the years. I think he got better.

KDE is one of the most mature and customizable DE's out there now. KDE could really look like anything you want. I've made mine similar to Unity as I like the design, but not the way it works
[img_thumb] http://greker.org/and/rts/snapshot13.png [/img_thumb]
Its very nice with dualscreens aswell, as the other screen could be used in a whole different way (Im using mine as a fullscreen menu, aswell as a normal screen with windows ofc)

That actually looks pretty beautiful. I like the simplicity of it.
I yet have to dare to install Arch on my desktop. I currently have Mint, is there a way to install new DE's on something which is not Arch?
[editline]8th June 2013[/editline]
Suppose I can install DE's on whatever distro I want. However, I have a little problem. I forgot both my username and password for my Mint install. Is there a way to recover it?
Garry has changed over the years. I think he got better.
When you put it like that, it seems as if not lending to our views (yes, we're not subjectively correct, shock) made him worse somehow. John Carmack himself had a rant on reddit about how Linux native support isn't worth it, and we should be instead focusing on having Wine work (I wonder if he's looking towards Crossover or whatever commercial Wine is?).
Of course with my own personal opinion I think Garry's done a pretty awesome job. He's ported to Linux despite all the problems with he's had with it, and that it probably won't rake in a significant amount of money.
That and he changes his opinions on things. There's a lot of people that just don't do that, and it's terrible.

You can recover your username by looking in /etc/shadow, and reset your password by using the 'passwd' command. You can't recover it, that'd be a major security flaw.
Garry has changed over the years. I think he got better.
Doesn't mean that we're not allowed to be skeptical.

Carmack's point was more about how Linux is a less uniform platform than Windows, wasn't it, though, and how the amount of people who use only Linux is so low that it makes no real sense to develop for two platforms.
He didn't exactly dismiss Valve's work for Linux support but certainly seemed to think that it isn't the best strategy businesswise.

Garry gives enough of a fuck to make sure GMod works in Linux.
Time will tell if any further fucks are given, though I will acknowledge that a decent portion of instability is due to GMod giving more of a beating to Source than it was designed to take.
