And yet it's STILL not the same as a complete system shutdown & then afterswards, start-up.
Yeah, maybe by your definition. All I said is that it does completely power off the system, he made it sound like it still uses some power like suspend does.
Backpedal, backpedal....
Yeah, from the words that you're trying to put in my mouth :). If you actually read the post you replied to you'd notice that we both talked about POWERING OFF.
Just a random though: I'm rather bothered by how bad font rendering is in linux compared to windows (it feels and looks really thin/sharp). If you guys could point me to a package that would improve it i'd greatly appreciate it.
Anyone here watch The Linux Action Show? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vihXlw6Yw-E 0:27:26 Talk about Garry's Mod on linux. 1:08:28 Garry rant.

If you're on Arch you can get a preconfigured bundle here.
Fucking linux users.
To be fair he is an Arch Linux user, short of Gentoo we're the worst of the bunch.
Fucking linux users.
That's hilariously awful and that person needs to get a grip on reality. Though for real that's the first time I've heard that reasoning to port a game to Linux, at least out loud. So while you're here: Thanks for porting the game to Linux, and thanks for taking the butthurt users in stride. As Garry fixed the CS:S mounting I went straight to a DarkRP server and was greeted by a hobo trying to punch me, a person named 'Pinkie Pie' and another named 'Scootaloo' yelling at police on microphone with young kid voices, and being arrested twice. You can't even make this shit up.
Fucking linux users.
Fuck those people indeed. I really love the fact that you've ported it. When I get the chance I'll reinstall Ubuntu or Mint and on my laptop I'll avoid Windows like the pest. I had two reasons to not use Linux on a daily basis. The first and foremost was GMod. The other one was visual studio. But fuck visual studio I'll run XP or 7 in a virtual machine for that or something. I'm way too addicted to GMod. Also garry recently asked on Twitter "The font rendering in Source under Linux makes the font rendering in Source on OSX look like puke. I wonder why that is?" I've had terrible experiences with fonts in Linux (because I don't care enough to fix them), and at some point a good amount of my fonts were hard to look at due to bad subpixel rendering. I think what Garry's seeing is Ubuntu's nice font rendering patches, since Source employees FreeType they get the nice testing stuff. Ubuntu's patched in some code that's questionable due to software patents (ugh, this is why we can't have nice things), so maybe Canonical has paid some royalties somwhere. Something new is the Infinality project which is getting some traction, aimed to give Linux the best font rendering of any OS. Here's a comparison. [editline]12th June 2013[/editline] Here's actually a screenshot of various font options, on my system:
The whole linux_gaming subreddit is just so awful. They took that one frustrated tweet as garry basically saying "I FUCKING HATE LINUX AND EVERY LINUX USER" despite the fact that he has still been porting it all this time. They're holding such a meaningless grudge over some of the frankly true things he's said about Linux. It's really pathetic how bitchy they're getting about it.

Absolute shithole, almost as bad as r/atheism [editline]11th June 2013[/editline] in my anger towards r/Linux_Gaming I decided to learn how to say "see ya, bitches" in Russian (свидания, сук, probably wrong but I don't give enough of a fuck right now) i feel good about myself
So I just installed infinality, and I have to say, It makes the font rendering look A LOT better. There are still a few things I don't like (like all the letters seem to be much.... thinner then in windows) but I think I can get used to that over time. I can now look at text in chrome now without making my eyes bleed. [editline]12th June 2013[/editline] It's really quite crisp actually.
It's a pity GNOME and the rest of the GTK coterie don't do hi-DPI scaling very well: I've got a 1080p in a 15.6" form factor, and I'd be willing to give up some information density and crispness for more accurate rendering.
I put some code in a patch last night to track how many people play Garry's Mod per OS. Anyone interested in the numbers so far?
I reckon it's not going to be much, but I think people will start playing it more on Linux as time passes. I know I will :)

I'm quite curious if the lack of Linux support being listed on the Steam page itself (since it's still a little rough, although that's kind of normal to Linux users) is a bit of a factor in people's awareness.
Interesting numbers, guessing it may grow as it comes out to Steam as officially a Linux game, and as more bugs are fixed. Thanks for the port by the way, been getting better and better
I think I managed to install grub in both /dev/sda AND /dev/sda1 (where Windows 8 is). So now whenever I try to enter Windows 8 with the Grub menu, it just opens a new instance of it. Whatever I do I enter Grub if I try to enter Windows 8. Is there a way to remove it from there?
It's probably going to be easiest to fix the Windows bootloader(and remove grub) with a Windows disc, then repair grub.
It's probably going to be easiest to fix the Windows bootloader(and remove grub) with a Windows disc, then repair grub.
I managed to fix it with TestDisk and using the live CD of Mint. Thanks anyway!
So after having spent a few days playing with debian I realized that arch has really spoiled me. Quite a few of the packages (even in experimental) are not nearly as up-to-date as their arch counterparts. I'm going to give fedora, gentoo and os x 10.8 (for t3h lulz) a try over the coming weeks to see if I like any of them, with gentoo being the most likely contender. However, I'm pretty sure that I'm an Arch man through and through at this point.
Any good remote desktop software that support displaying OpenGL rendering? AFAIK RealVNC does, but that requires you to pay for it.
That depending on your setup and what you want to display: x11vnc will display the current X session including any OpenGL renderings, but is kinda slow because it has to hook into the existing X session. TigerVNC starts a new X session and will display OpenGL as long as you're using open source drivers. Nvidia(and maybe AMD) replace the existing libGL files needed for this. I'm not sure about hardware acceleration though, I think x11vnc will be, but I'm not sure about TigerVNC. EDIT: I confused TightVNC with x11vnc.
I don't mind if it's a little laggy, since it's mostly to check up on things while I'm temporarily away. Gonna try out tightvnc.
Van-man, you should rather try out x11vnc. It allows you to connect to your "main" display. By executing the following command, you'll be able to see your main desktop:
x11vnc -display :0 -nevershared -forever
This pretty much still applies web.mit.edu/~simsong/www/ugh.pdf Which is generally hilarious Linux isnt gonna take off for the end users anytime soon because you need to be an expert to not blow your system up with nicely functioning commands Even then experienced sysadmins still manage to accidently rm -rf / the disk from time to time because something was designed by a mentally retarded monkey
