Skype has been going downhill since the M$ takeover
the client was always terrible
Skype for linux is terrible.
Run it through wine
Forgot that it runs like garbage

Use a different VOIP service if at all possible.
Anything is better than Skype, no matter what OS you're running.

But nothing is really as universally used, nor does it 'just work'
That's the thing that's always turned me off of alternatives is the hoops you have to jump through just to get voice that sounds somewhat better than using a landline phone...

This is part of the reason I prefer text communication.
It's also the reason why if I have to use voice I try to exclusively use my cell phone and dial a real number.
I don't really have problems with Skype on Linux, but that's probably because I mainly use it for chatting.
And hey it's better than MSN was.

/g/ are working on their own skype alternative and it looks like it might actually succeed (succeed as in it might not get abandoned)
It's weird, I've never had the problems you guys had. However, I'll definitely give Tox a try, mentioned by superstepa above. Who doesn't want open-source software?
Tox sounds cool. Definitely gonna give it a shot.

Oh. :v:
Its not exactly in a usable state left - still proof of concept, I think.
As far as I know, Mumble is stable, high-quality, and has good security. The downside is that you need to set up a server, but it's much nicer than Skype.

The IM in mumble is terrible, and it is centralized unlike Skype was originally. (Microsoft/Skype have apparently made the messages all travel through their servers now..)
Why some of you want to use Skype I'll never know. Use jitsi instead.
Why some of you want to use Skype I'll never know. Use jitsi instead.
Because our friends don't know what 'jitsi' or 'Mumble' is.

Some people don't care about their freedom or their privacy.
Some people don't care about their freedom or their privacy.
TBH if some third party is interested in my communications they have a rather terrible taste
If I needed private comms I'd use our Mumble server or a private IRC server or PGP'd email or something.
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
Terrible taste as in half of my online conversations consist of "oh god look at this picture of a cat". The worst thing someone could do with that stuff would be personally embarrassing me and I can't imagine anyone, especially not an intelligence service or megacorp, doing that.
Maybe Microsoft is gonna start targeting ads based on my love of foxes or something. I don't really care.
[editline]20th July 2013[/editline]
I'm not saying encrypted, free communications are a bad or useless idea, just that it doesn't, in many cases, really matter whether you talk to people over a secure channel.

Those few who manage to build it can't really do more then use it as a half functional IRC client.

Well it is an IM client so at least they're half way there.

NEver install things from the internet, ALWAYS use your system's package manager. (or in this case using Jockey is ok too)
First of all you need to attempt to uninstall whatever driver you just installed from some website. Probably won't be easy given you didn't use the package manager :u.
Then attempt to update your system, install the correct drivers using the application "jockey" (the settings->video drivers utility or whatever), and then finally you may want to check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf. In most cases it's better off to just delete xorg.conf since X will configure itself.

First of all, AMD no longer supports the Radeon HD 4xxxx series or below, so their drivers will be total shit if they even work.
Fear not, for the open source drivers actually happen to be really good with the 4670 (I'm using it right now!)
I can play games like Team Fortress 2 or Xonotic or what have you else with no issue at all, so don't bother with the closed sourced drivers unless you _REALLY_ have to, for some obscure reason.
Thanks for your help guys.
But isn't the open source drivers make lag?
I found markson96 ppa it makes my games are really smooth but it just randomly stuck i have to do restart my pc.
Looks like I need new graphic card.

What games are you playing? I haven't been using Ubuntu for a very long time, so I can't answer for the quality of the software on that system, but on my system everything is perfectly smooth. Albeit not in the highest quality tier.

I am mostly play valve games.
I am mostly play valve games.
Then you shouldn't have much issue really. Just make sure to play on the lowest settings first, and then see what works from there on. All Valve games should work just fine on the lowest possible setting with the highest resolution on a 4670. Does for me anyway, on my 6 year old system with 2GB RAM and a Intel Core2 Viiv processor.
Valve games are definitely pretty amenable on low settings, and they still don't look half bad.

That's not the Valve I remember - good times were had with a GMA X3100 on DX8 mode: the thing easily got 60 fps, pat. A few vertices were barfed here and there, but that was in the bad old days of Intel's driver support.

Yeah what he said. The last version of Catalyst to support 4000 series cards was 12.6.
I think jockey actually installs that version or an earlier one.
The dudes over on this wiki probably know what they are talking about more though:

oh yeah and this guy
Again the laptop issue:
My fedora19 installation doesn't boot to the login screen.
It's a fresh install and the only thing I've done is install gnome tweak tool and updated my packages.
Any clue what's going on?
[t]http://i.imgur.com/HgfUobf.jpg[/t]
X shat itself or something. It likes to do that in fedora. Ctrl + Alt + F2 then login as root and go like this:
Xorg
It will probably spew a bunch of shit out at you and that may or may not inform you as to why it is not working.
A server at work is dropping the outside network occasionally, running Debian 6.
Where can i start troubleshooting?
