Well then..I somehow have created a setup that both has working KMS (Plymouth works!) and still has the proprietary nvidia blob...
Ubuntu has never really worked for me. Something about it does not play well with my WiFi and I cannot seem to figure out what it is exactly. The connection will basically drop after a few seconds of web browsing or even trying to update to a newer version. Has anyone heard of this issue?
Which version are you using? On a Toshiba Satellite, this was also an issue on 12.04, got fixed in 12.10. Are you perhaps using 13.04?
Does anyone have fmodapi42636linux64.tar.gz? I've been wanting to play some brutal doom on zdoom, but for midi playback it requires that specific version of fmod. Where the fmod.org site is no longer hosting old packages.
Mmh i can try, last time i installed fglrx and it stopped unity from launching.
The HD4xxx series isn't supported anymore iirc. Stick with the open source drivers.
Try this, it works for HD4xxx: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/catalyst-total-hd234k/
The HD4xxx series isn't supported anymore iirc. Stick with the open source drivers.
But are the open source good enough to play cs 1.6 at more than 60 fps?
But are the open source good enough to play cs 1.6 at more than 60 fps?
Why more than 60fps? But that depends on the video card. Currently they probably aren't with the card you specified, but that might change with the coming release of Mesa 9.2.
i have a XS880m or something a HD 4250. But why cant i use the non free drivers that supported my gpu before. Is there not a older driver that works with it?
Check if system has the tools required for installation. fglrx installation requires that the system have kernel headers. /lib/modules/3.8.0-27-generic/build/include/linux/version.h cannot be found on this system. One or more tools required for installation cannot be found on the system. Install the required tools before installing the fglrx driver. Optionally, run the installer with --force option to install without the tools. Forcing install will disable AMD hardware acceleration and may make your system unstable. Not recommended.
Do you have the linux-headers-generic package installed?
I do not have 3.8.00-27 generic installed. Which this old driver wants to use. and yes the free drivers come with 13.04, but in cs 1.6 i get around 26 fps, the game skips and is almost unplayable.
Does anyone else use KDE and would you recommend it at all? Feels like I just stared at the sun when something popped up.
Does anyone else use KDE and would you recommend it at all? Feels like I just stared at the sun when something popped up.
I love it. It takes some customization tho.
I love it. It takes some customization tho.
So far, I can say I kind of like it. It's very bloated when it comes to some things (like all these widgets for example) but performance-wise, I'm getting the same general speed as Unity. And surprisingly, Unity was the fastest DE I used when it came to anything. And browser text rendering is atrocious on a Windows level.

KDE is functionally quite good, but it's hideous. It's like a mix of Windows XP and Vista. [editline]1st August 2013[/editline] If you want good font rendering, look at Infinality. A good setup will beat the shit out of any windows or even OSX setup.
What could i do?
This wiki is pretty handy sometimes when it isn't getting vandalised. http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Raring_Installation_Guide
I have a little Problem with Raspian (or my Raspberry Pi/Linux in generell, I dunno). I wrote a little shell script that should get executed everytime an Ethernet-Connection is up. It opens a specific Website with wget and stores its Internet and LAN-IP there. (So if I connect it somewhere I can look up on the Website which IP it got.) To run this Script everytime I connect it to the LAN, I dropped the File under /etc/network/if-up.d. The Problem now is: When I start my RPi, the Internet-Site get opened and the IP inserted, but then the RPi stops there. On the Display it say's something about "Configuring Network Interfaces..." and hang there. The SSH-Server won't start and I can't go to the local CLI. The RPi itself is reachable through the Network (at least, it responds to my pings). Where is the Problem? Have I've done something wrong? It seems like the Script itself is caught in an infinity-loop. Or is there any other way to realize this? I also thought about something like an reverse SSH-Tunnel, but this also have to be initialized on an upcoming ethernet-connection. Any help? P.S.: I can boot the RPi by moving the script out of the if-up.d folder when I plug the SD-Card in my PC. I only want to get it working. :(
Anyone had any luck with Manjaro Linux?
Seriously wish there was a better way to make *.DESKTOP files besides either that one program in the Software Center or manually.
I sort of want to switch back to Noveau after hearing about all the cool D3D stuff that's being done with it. Does noveau support Twinview or anything like that? it's important.
Is there any way to re-add the AIF to Arch? I've had it with spending half an hour doing all the scripts and then finding it doesn't boot.

In the benchmark I was getting 10 frames per second on fglrx, after switching to the r600 driver I was getting 15, and now using the d3d9 code I'm getting 20-22. It's not far off the performance I was seeing under Windows. [editline]3rd August 2013[/editline] There are some artifacts and bugs, but the performance is way up.

It's a shame Noveau isn't as far ahead as the open source AMD drivers in terms of 3D. Unless that has changed recently?
