General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. I broke my Arch Install

Well, I'm going to give Linux a first try on my old laptop (Inspiron 1000). Gonna try Crunchbang to see how I like it.
Is there any way to re-add the AIF to Arch? I've had it with spending half an hour doing all the scripts and then finding it doesn't boot.
the AIF is broken to hell and back. you're better off using the normal install procedure.

This should get you trough easily.
I have a little Problem with Raspian (or my Raspberry Pi/Linux in generell, I dunno).
I wrote a little shell script that should get executed everytime an Ethernet-Connection is up.
It opens a specific Website with wget and stores its Internet and LAN-IP there. (So if I connect it somewhere I can look up on the Website which IP it got.) To run this Script everytime I connect it to the LAN, I dropped the File under /etc/network/if-up.d.
The Problem now is: When I start my RPi, the Internet-Site get opened and the IP inserted, but then the RPi stops there. On the Display it say's something about "Configuring Network Interfaces..." and hang there. The SSH-Server won't start and I can't go to the local CLI. The RPi itself is reachable through the Network (at least, it responds to my pings).
Where is the Problem? Have I've done something wrong? It seems like the Script itself is caught in an infinity-loop.
Or is there any other way to realize this? I also thought about something like an reverse SSH-Tunnel, but this also have to be initialized on an upcoming ethernet-connection.
Any help?
P.S.: I can boot the RPi by moving the script out of the if-up.d folder when I plug the SD-Card in my PC. I only want to get it working. :(
Could you pastebin your script? And are you using any network manager? (ex. NetworkManager, Wicd, etc). If you are unsure, check "sudo service --status-all" if you see anything relating to it there.
JESUS CHRIST.
My laptop is ALIVE. I love Linux now. This thing has never performed this fast under any version of Windows it could run. I only have got to get used to the way Linux works and I'll be good.
I'm happy for the fact that I didn't even need drivers for my internet adapter.
Goddammit I'm so lost.
I'm running Linux Mint and I want to patch my drivers for my Intel wireless card (ipw5100) so that they can do packet injection and the sort.
How would I go about doing this? I read something about the kernel needing patching?

The iwlwifi driver should support packet injection(just tested on my iwl5100.) Make sure you set the proper chanel when starting monitor mode.
If the AP is on channel 1:
airmon-ng start wlan0 1
aireplay-ng -9 mon0

Damn, that sounds pretty good. It's a shame Noveau isn't as far ahead as the open source AMD drivers in terms of 3D. Unless that has changed recently?
As far as I'm aware, it's quite bad on post-fermi hardware since the GPU boots in lower power mode and nouveau doesn't know how to re-clock the card. (see "Current Status" http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/)
AFIK nouveau supports manual reclocking, so you could force it to run at a higher perf level.
EDIT: Well, it kinda works. Just tried it out and core/shader reclocking works, but not memory.
I'm beginning to hate optirun (bumblebee)...
Fuck you NVidia .-.
Yo guys I'm sshing to my universities server, however I need to view a few images in there and I'm using ssh -X
What is the standard Debian image viewer?
What is a good texteditor?
Cheers

Image viewer:
no clue
Text editor:
Nano if you want it to be console based and gedit if you want a gui
There's no 'standard' image viewer but you could try: feh, eog, ristretto, or mirage
Might be best to copy them locally then view them though.
Is it me or does Linux have better audio than Windows? It sounds a lot more vibrant and I found having to adjust audio resampling in a game because of how low quality it sounded compared to in Windows.

Gwenview or Eye of Gnome
Gedit
Mirage is installed.
Thank you guys for the quick help. It's kinda weird I have to ssh to an outer server and then tunnel through 2 others :(

Different question.
I've got dual boot with one HDD that has two partitions, now I gotta reinstall my Windows, it's too clunky after 4 years but I know Windows fucks with the bootloader, what is a quick tool to repair it after the fresh windows install?
Before I get too comfy with my install of Crunchbang, should I stick with #! or should I try Linux Mint out instead? I'm limited to 768 MB of RAM here with about 2.2 GHz total processing power, so that's the limit when it comes to choosing my OS.

Most of the Linux Mint spins will probably be a bit heavier than #!, though if you have time to try them out then I can't really fault it.
There's not a lot of point in going from #! to Mint, I would expect someone to do the opposite. Just install cinnamon and you're set.
[editline]3rd August 2013[/editline]
or stick with Ob.
The only reason I wanted to switch to Mint is because, so far, installing some things (Steam, etc.) seems to be more of a pain in the ass on #! than Mint (or it just seems that way since I'm so new).
At the current moment though it seems like Mint isn't transferring too well to my USB for a LiveUSB. Might just be a bad download though. Gonna redownload Mint and see if it does any better.
Mint is just very good looking IMO and less fat than Ubuntu I use it for my work netbook, it's perfect.
Mint is pretty much just ubuntu with a different UI.
Mint is pretty much just ubuntu with a different UI.
That explains why my laptop pisses itself every time I try to boot to it.
It won't boot to Ubuntu, Xubuntu, and now Mint. It always hangs in the middle of booting. Guess I'll stick with #!.
I'm trying to set up a VPN on my VPS, I have installed it without any errors, however when I try to allow the connections in IPTables, I get this:
iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.
I typed the command:
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 192.0.0/24 -o venet0 -j MASQUERADE
I am following a tutorial to do this.
Does anybody know why it's doing this? I also cannot connect to the VPS from my local machine, I simply get:
A connection to the remote computer could not be estabalished, so the port used for this connection was closed.
iptables -A FORWARD -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -s 10.8.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT
iptables -A FORWARD -j REJECT
iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -s 10.8.0.0/24 -o venet0 -j SNAT --to-source YOURIP
that's what I did on my VPS (OpenVPN). Keep in mind, if it's running OpenVZ, then you need to get a flag on your server
also, are you making sure you're not already using the port?
I continue to get this error.

I can't see where it's going wrong, and Windows is no help what so ever.

I just realized I am running on OpenVZ, how would I get a flag?

Contact your host asking them to enable NAT.

If you just need to forward/mask ex. webtraffic over your VPS it might be easier just to setup SSH Tunneling/Forwarding (Its also safer, as all the traffic is encrypted)

what dork said, also what are you using exactly for VPN?

I'm using PPTPD, I've contacted my host, just waiting for a reply now

That's more of a driver/hardware thing. It's possible that Windows had installed a generic driver for your audio card (onboard or not) and that's why you get poor sound in Windows.
While Linux just has the proper drivers loaded into the kernel already. :u
