Trying to edit /etc/rc.tcpip and /etc/hosts. Logged in as root. vi keeps telling me the file is read-only and won't let me write changes. What the fuck?

Postfix doesn't seem to allow external connections and I'm even -unable to send mail through Roundcube (hosted on the same server). Linux is amazing on my laptop. Except hibernate doesn't work. Sigh. I wish it did. [editline]18th September 2013[/editline] Huh, now I got it to properly save the damn thing to disk... I think I might be getting some progress here. [editline]18th September 2013[/editline] Now I no longer have 3D acceleration. Talk about a learning experience.

Talk about a learning experience.
I know that this may not be the best of ideas, but if you're using an AMD or Intel GPU, have you considered just getting the pf-linux kernel and compiling with
make allmodconfig
I believe this is the same way it is done in Arch, but I'm not 100% certain on that. [editline]18th September 2013[/editline] The pf kernel includes a lot of useful patches, but also TuxOnIce, which is a very useful hibernation kernel module, that (i believe) utilizes saving the sleep image to disk. You'll need to install tuxonice_userui as well though.
I tried a TuxOnIce kernel, didn't work. Uswsusp at the very least wrote the kernel state into an image, and shut down correctly, but on boot it loaded the image and then just, sat there.
not sure if I should sit down and spend time fully fixing up my Arch install or if I should change to another distro which works out of the box. an annoying problem for me is that all sort of graphics stuff, 2D and 3D works like a freaking nightmare. basic shit like Hotline Miami and Super Hexagon lags to death unless the window is about 50x50 big which is unplayable. I have the open source AMD drivers installed, and I tried switching to the stock ones but as inexperienced as I am with linux I managed to goof something up which made the X server unable to start up so I had to change back. oh and, I've grown tired of gnome overall. what are some good DE's out there which are highly customizeable? something else than gnome (and it's "children") and xfce?

I cannot get proprietary NVIDIA drivers to manually install on Ubuntu 13.04. First attempt fucked up GRUB, second attempt couldn't boot into login/lightdm, third is fucking up graphically and spitting artifacts at me. Should I just give up and use the repo drivers? Switch to 12.04.3 and hope for better luck? I have no clue when those drivers were updated last, but probably not recently. The latest drivers from NVIDIA's website are from August, which would be nice if I could get the god damn things to work. The hardware I'm running is pretty powerful, and I want to get the most I can out of it. If anyone could give me some advice, or maybe point me in the direction of a guide that isn't flat out wrong, I'd appreciate it. I've only been using Linux on my main setup for a few days, so I kinda need my hand held.

The drivers listed on the Geforce website for example. 325.08 was listed as being released in July, whereas 319.49 was released in August. The one you linked has the newest version number of any I've seen, but was also released in August. So I'm a bit confused. Although that seems to be a good option, certainly easier than opening term from login and doing it all manually... [editline]19th September 2013[/editline] I was aware of the PPA but I thought the revisions stopped at 319
In ubuntu can't you just run "sudo jockey", select the desired proprietary drivers, and be done?

If so read this: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee
Anyone with experience of installing Cisco's PacketTracer for a gentoo-based distro? I'm using Sabayon right now and want to use the PacketTracer program, but any .ebuild I've found doesn't work. I am going a cisco course/program right now, and would like to have it on my laptop.
Do you have one of those videocards that uses optimus? If so read this: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee
Nope, GTX 670. Gonna give the 325 driver a go on 13.04 [editline]19th September 2013[/editline]
In ubuntu can't you just run "sudo jockey", select the desired proprietary drivers, and be done?
I'll check, but if they're the same as the repo drivers, they're pretty old
After 5 hours of hard work, I finally got my Server back where I wanted it to be. Basically I fucked up by installing XEN, fucking up XEN, uninstalling XEN without updating the grub entries. Server refused to boot, and had to call my datacenter to get them to select the proper boot option. Now I fixed the grub enties, removed all traces of XEN, and other software I didn't need, and now it works flawlessly again. And now my server has the ability to quickly set up source gameservers. Yay! Now I just need to finish setting up vsftpd, and maybe support more gameservers. And maybe upgrade from Debian 7 Stable to [del]unstable[/del] testing.
What's a good wm when using terminals all day, but also programs like Steam, Skype, Mumble and Chrome? I'm currently using Kubuntu but I feel like getting a simpler wm. I've used i3 on my laptop once but it's just too simple for me.

Also could I run into any problems if I just install another wm on Kubuntu? or should I get another distro? [editline]19th September 2013[/editline] damnit my meerge

[editline]19th September 2013[/editline] damnit my meerge
No. (Correct me if I spew bullshit here), AFAIK Kubuntu is just ubuntu with the kubuntu-desktop package installed. You can change your DE/WM in the login panel.
well I've decided to re-install my Arch but I am wondering, what do you guys think will perform best out of the open source AMD drivers or the stock ones from AMD? I used the open source ones but it performed horribly but I'm curious if I did something wrong on my side or if those drivers really suck?

My friend has the proprietary drivers on his laptop, so instead of slow speed he gets buttery smooth artifacts.

There are some exceptions to this case (Source games happen to run really well on the open source drivers for me), but it doesn't apply to everyone. My opinion is to try out the proprietary drivers, to see if there's any change. Try to install this package using yaourt or whatever your preferred method is, and see if there's any positive change.
thanks guys, will try out the proprietary drivers this time and see if it's any better.
I'll check, but if they're the same as the repo drivers, they're pretty old
You can select "Experimental" proprietary drivers in jockey. Afaik they're up-to-date, but I don't use Ubuntu so I'm not sure. [editline]asf[/editline] Make sure your system has been updated recently through the software manager or jockey might fail. My friend's system was out of date when he was trying to install experimental drivers through jockey, and it kept failing with an obscure error message.
bumb
I wish I could help but that all goes over my head :v:
