General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. I broke my Arch Install
So I've got a problem. My netbook recently got fucked in a very strange way- it's screen is complete incomprehensible pixel trash (Although it does look very pretty!) until kernel is done initializing (once all the modules start getting loaded), so I have absolutely no access to any kind of POST, BIOS or GRUB screen. I've been holding out hope that it may be due to shittastic Poulsbo drivers (I'm on an Acer Aspire One D270; Intel GMA 500) but I'm increasingly becoming doubtful of them even being installed correctly on my Crunchbang installation.
Does anyone know of any possible way I could wipe all the shit off this computer, probably update the BIOS, and try to start again and -hope- that fixes this issue? If not I guess I'm stuck with Crunchbang 11 Stable for the rest of this netbook's life which isn't too bad ~i guess~. I remind you I cannot access the boot priority menu or GRUB, ALTHOUGH, the one possible thing I've come up with is hoping that GRUB is simply clocking down and choosing the default boot, and if I could get it to boot into a USB-image by changing the presets then ???
One thing I could do is do a CMOS reset, but I'd like to wait until that's the final option. Also, what's weirder is that I have GPU acceleration (however shitty), full use of the screen resolution and all that jazz yet no psb or gma500 drivers or modules are being run on any aspect of my system, in so far as I can tell, X or otherwise.
edit:
I have now lost all ability to access the internet using my netbook because I'm a dumbass and uninstalling bluetooth also uninstalled everything networking-related ever.
I'm guessing I'm pretty dead in the water on this, then. Fuck.

did you try turning the censorship option back off? :v:

The option is probably censored too.
incredibly frustrating the fact that linux isn't more supported. love linux so much more than windows and everything else, but the lack of everything hurts.
not sure if this is the right place to post about it, but how do i fix a broken windows boot mgr? i somehow broke it when i installed linux so i can't boot into windows anymore, leaving me with linux which doesn't work with what i use the most sadly

Then use EasyBCD to add an option to boot to GRUB to the Windows boot loader.
If you have a bootable Windows disk you should be able to restore the default boot partition with some commands. I don't know off the top of my head, but this seems to be the right tutorial:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/rebuild-bcd-store-windows.htm
The command that you have to put in the command line should work for the command line on a Windows install disk, under the repair options there.
Edit: Or do what benbb said. That seems like it might actually work
Has any one used Justbuntu before? Looks like a pretty good Ubuntu spin-off.

I was wanting to move away from Unity, but still keep with something Debian based like Ubuntu.
It's 3.9GB to Ubuntu's ~800mb :I
Since I'm in distro fuck around mode I'll give it a shot.

Looks sexy! Might have to try it one itme.
just grew a little more fonder of linux after discovering that my terrible game performance came of a bug in catalyst which was easy to workaround.
not sure if this is the place to post this, but does anyone know why my cursor in dota 2 is not aligned with what the game wants? for example, if i hover my mouse over a button i won't be able to click it because the mouse is not actually there, but if i move around 2-3 cm away from the button to the left i can click on it? the cursor placement is normal on the left side of the screen, where the settings box is, but the more i go to the right the worse it gets.
also, whenever running games (openGL so far, haven't tried anything else) i'll get graphical artifacts all over my screens after a while at random, sometimes from the very beginning. what is this?
What version of catalyst

Last time I had texture issues like that, I think I fixed it by installing {lib32-,}libtxc_dxtn

I might give this a try on Tuesday, when my USB drive arrives. I've been mounting all my ISO files on my phone, and it's such a pain to get it to boot correctly. Need to try pinguy OS as well.
I'm on elementary OS right now. I like the look of it, everything about it is nice. The only thing I really wish it had were support for extensions like GNOME does. Still trying to figure out which fork to use, although I think I'm going to be staying on Ubuntu. I really like how it works, and devs are usually kind enough to post how-to guides for Ubuntu dummies like me.

wow, it actually worked! thank you!
Does anyone know how to get an external application menu bar (like what unity has) on another wm, like openbox? Or atleast how to style it? It looks really ugly and distracting with sublime text on my setup.

Not directly possible, as I think that the Unity Launcher bar is hardcoded into the Unity DE. But this is Linux, and there is probleary other look-alikes exsisting, one that I know of is the "Icon-Only Launcher" for KDE. And if you don't want the whole KDE DE, you can switch out KWin and use the KDE Plasma Widgets together with Openbox. Several ways to do this here: Arch Wiki: Openbox with KDE
Edit: Not sure if this is what you wanted, but it seems like its possible to use Unity 2D with Openbox aswell. Tutorial here: Blogspot: Replace Metacity with Openbox
Guh, I'd love to try Linux because OS X feels really sluggish sometimes. But I make game reviews, and I really don't want to abandon Screenflow, Premiere, After Effects, and unfortunately I have to use Elgato EyeTV because my PVR is a piece of shit
ZSH just saved my home directory.

Do I really have to hook up my computer to some other method of networking in order to get wireless internet firmware? The kernel is saying that it can't find b43 files.

Those are Broadcom drivers, right? I had to install older Broadcom propriety drivers on my netbook because the Live CD version didn't work. They have packages available to put on a USB or something if you don't want to/can't connect to the internet.

What do you mean by menu bar? The transparent launcher panel, or the dash itself? If it's the former, you could try setting up Docky and then hide whatever you were using before.

I wouldn't know how to build it on openbox though

Last time I had to deal with Broadcom on Linux, I had to download the Windows drivers and use a program to extract the firmware out of them, because Broadcom hardware requires the OS to push the firmware into the hardware before it will work.
So basically Broadcom are a bunch of assholes, and yes.

Sorry if I was a bit unclear, I was talking about this thing:

I found something on Stack Overflow that completely removes the menubar - which isn't actually bad in this case since ST has everything on the command palette anyway. Thanks anyway.

If I understand correctly now, you want the Menu Bar on Openbox? In that case, KDE has that widget aswell (called Window Menubar), and it is styleable. And if you follow the steps I posted earlier, you can run the KDE Plasma Widgets under Openbox

Oh cool thanks, I'll have a look.
I am currently working on securing my GNU/Linux server.
I've secured SSH now, and for the past day there have been no unauthorized logon attempts anymore.
On the FTP tough, there are ~40 attempts a day. Is there anything to keep in mind when operating an FTP service from a security standpoint? (vsftpd).

I'm not very knowledgable on the subject, but any reason why you're not running FTP over SSH? Like SCP?
SFTP?
who still uses regular FTP?

I sometimes do for several occasions, and anonymous FTP stuff.
